Interesting problem. Slight incline, too much load, but creativity prevailed. I wish I lived in a small town like this. The street running would get my attention all the time, especially with a ALCO S-6.

What a great old switcher. Love it. My father-in-law, now long passed, drove these old Alcos for years as an engineer on the Terminal Rail Road Association in St. Louis. Thanks for a great video.

You mentioned the possibility of oil from motor vehicles, but not the fine ground rubber from their tires. That stuff can be as slippery as glass.

No one mentioned that poor conductor hustling his ass off? Steel toes, bit of stress, and it's friggen cold air going into his lungs. Not to mention the idea of a motorist hitting him. He earned his pay that day!

The DOT 1017 placard on the last tanker indicates chlorine. But you said it was empty, so no hazard I suppose. It's easy enough to look up the placard numbers, why guess what's being hauled?
@ohboy2592 Жыл бұрын
It can be empty residue and still needs a placard.

@ocsrc Жыл бұрын
@@koenthomas7966 are there separate lines ? Is there an Amtrak only track ? Is the freight line separate ? Is there both CSX and NS track from Harrisburg to Philadelphia ?
@MSRTA_Productions Жыл бұрын
@ocsrc Philly to Harrisburg is on NS, which is the Harrisburg Line. CSX used to run on the HARL as only intermodals before they left. And yes there are separate lines. Amtrak has their own Harrisburg Line. NS does have a separate track for the Royalton Branch between Harrisburg & Royalton along the Keystone.
@ocsrc Жыл бұрын
@@MSRTA_Productions I bet there is ATCS over the air for that line. If you check 897.9375 MHz and 936.9375 MHz with the squelch open you should hear a digital packet burst every 60 seconds from each control point near you.

That's why ALCO Switcher doesn't have the power on slight steep grades. Prime Mover (engine) is a 90 horsepower unit, would still do the job but not enough HP. that would need assistance from a DPU ( foreign. power) especially climbing hills like this and other hills on the other videos where trains going thru back roads may travel on tracks going up hills .
@Lutherkb Жыл бұрын
What?! Lol take a look at my video of DL 1044 on a steep grade that curves into its interchange yard with no trouble with a sizeable train attached. On a shove, no slack advantage. I'd wager that that S6 needs a bit of a tune up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/imHEnJxmlLpjmqM

This locomotive is crap and so are the crew. They are not using inertia to their advantage. On the contrary, they are stalling, so now the locomotive has to deal with static friction.
