Henry Fonda narrates this film, "Alcohol Abuse: The Early Warning Signs" on the subject of alcoholism. It takes a look at the early warning signs of the disease through various narratives. (Fonda had a five decade spanning career in the film and television industry beginning in 1935. He is also the father of the popular actress; Jane Fonda.) The film opens with scenes of social gatherings with guests consuming alcohol such as at a holiday dinner (:14) or at a local bar (:21). A martini is poured garnished with olives (:31). A couple drinks in bed together (:39). The film is presented by Charles Cahill and Associates (1:18). Henry Fonda makes his appearance at (1:52) to give further detail into alcoholism and how it affects the user and those around the user (1:52). The first case depicted is of a traveling salesman who has developed a drinking habit (2:39). He states entertaining potential clients is vital and often encourages drinking (2:53). He meets his clients at a bar (3:31). At a gas service station, an employee discusses his early start with the substance in high-school (4:18). He continues to drink as he and friends pound back beer cans (4:50). A woman drinks coffee at work, nursing a hang over (5:06). Scenes from previous evening show her at a party drinking heavily to the point of black out (5:32). A hostile husband returns home from work (6:39) as his wife tells him of the evenings dinner plans (6:39). As the husband pours himself a drink, the wife begs him to refrain (6:54). This case highlights the personality changes which come with alcoholism (7:20). A young mother unloads groceries from the store (7:55), pours herself a drink and stashes the bottle so her husband won't find it. She states the alcohol helps her to relax so she can be the happy little housewife her husband expects (8:32). A fashion designer pours herself a drink while on the phone with a subordinate over a fabric issue (9:43). She states without the alcohol she couldn't make it through her high stress job (9:58). At the end of the day, a bus driver shows off a gift for his daughter (11:01). His supervisor offers him a ride home (11:53) which he refuses and instead heads to the bar ignoring his family commitments (12:22). A labor worker is approached by his supervisor over missed work (12:28). As the boss leaves, the employee admits to drinking heavily and states he will continue to do so (13:09). A jogger in the park pauses grasping at his side as he experiences a cramp (14:00). He was once in prime physical condition though alcoholism has slowed him down (14:19). At an office in a high rise building, a secretary struggles to follow irradic directions from her confused boss (15:26). Years of alcoholism have lead to deterioration of his physical and mental state (16:47). Fonda returns on screen to summarize the ten various early warning signs of alcoholism (17:47). Fonda encourages a method of abstinence (20:12). The film begins to wrap up with a list of organizations which are available to help with substance abuse (20:27).

Same for me, except that my parents were divorced when I was 2 and 1/2. We lived 1,500 miles from my father, and in the era before the internet, I had only occasional contact with him while I was growing up. All for the better, I later found out when I learned what kind of a person he had been.

These professionally produced PSAs with actors portraying various scenarios where symptoms of growing alcohol problems can potentially manifest, certainly do have their place. However it's been my own personal experience to be more influenced through media that shows actual real people testifying to their own personal experiences with overcoming their alcohol/substance abuse issues... from a 5 year abstainer after 43 yrs of alcoholism.

Lucky Ned, You're probably not the only family member who knows your sibling is an alcoholic. If he's married and has children, his spouse and kids are suffering. Not judging or saying you need to do anything. Hopefully if he's married his wife goes to an AA meeting to get educated about alcoholism. The meetings were very helpful to me because my ex husband is an alcoholic. I divorced and got myself & our kids out of that situation, not just for me, but because I needed a healthier home life for our children. Best thing I ever did. Especially for my now adult and successful children. My ex remarried & continued drinking. He's ruined his health.
@luckynedpepper9030

@@OceanSwimmer My sibling's kids are estranged from him. Like many alcoholics, he's also a narcissist and his needs always come before anyone else's. His kids recognized that early on. He tried AA but it didn't work. He seems to enjoy the drinking lifestyle. I don't beleive it's a "disease" as is fashionable to say these days. He once assaulted his father in a drunken rage. Of course, he doesn't remember doing so. Anyway, I'm glad you got your kids away from it. It was a good move on your part.

@OceanSwimmer
@OceanSwimmer 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesomethingthatisntathing514 , A dry drunk is an alcoholic who isn't drinking, but continues the dysfuntional behavior of an alcoholic who is still drinking. Alcoholics have to lie about a LOT of things to maintain the facade of normalcy. The home life and marriage remain ruined because lies undermine trust. Read Claudia Black's book, "Repeat After Me" or "Unspoken Legacy" if you want to gain a better understanding about alcoholism and how it affects the family. The problem of alcohol and other addictions are so widespread in America, I suggest these books and any by Claudia Black for more people to understand what effect this illness has on our lives. Chances are we all know at least two people who are struggling with addiction now.

I had to stay after school today and do a report on sticking to the topic. After I was finished, I went over to my friend's house whose parents were divorced. It was cool because his mom was never home so we could drink alcohol as much as we wanted. Eventually, my friend fell asleep on the couch and later he began snoring lightly. I was getting a bit bored at that point so I searched for some videos to watch about things that were factual and without narrative between 1930 and 1980. I saw some funny old car company training videos and some travel documentaries that made me laugh at how boring they could be. Then there was this video about alcoholism but it didn't make any sense...so I went down to the comment section to figure out what alcoholism was and someone had commented about gas prices or something. You know, after reading that comment, I realized that if the price of gas has been artificially inflated to gouge people in times of inflation, then what's to stop the same entities from artificially inflating the addiction to drugs and alcohol in times of indoctrination? That really had me putting two and two together! Even though the media says that it's three, gosh dern it, I'm gonna quit drinking from now on, start learning useful subjects, eat healthy food and breathe air instead of my own carbon dioxide. I'm sure glad there was someone commenting without sticking to the topic! That probably saved my life and maybe the lives of others! Happy Ending. Editorial completely sticking to the topic: Some people think they are morally superior because they actually despise others out of some form of childhood experience or inadequacy and some people are like junkyard dogs who bark at everything that passes by. They are sadly drones who usually find pleasure in cowardly ways through passive aggressive behavior and anonymous bullying on the internet. In a way, these types share a common thread with alcoholics because they do not know themselves that they are abusive and a bane to society. Responding to their cries for attention only feeds their egos, especially if you let them get under your skin and respond in a negative fashion. It is doubtful that intellect or logic would appeal to a sense of decent human nature but one can only hope. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." A lot of people are alcoholics and commentatrollics. Help them get into Alcoholics Anonymous or Commentrollics Alotymous and be supportive. They just need to take it one step at a time.
