Something to be aware of: alcohol withdrawals can be potentially fatal as they can often cause seizures. If you are a heavy drinker of alcohol make sure that you slowly reduce your alcohol in an observed environment.

Been there, done that! you are very correct. I tried to quit on my own, bad idea. Had 2 seizures, and spent about a week and a half in the hospital, then several months back at home with my parents before being able to be under my own roof again. I’m now 9 months sober and counting.

Recovering alcoholic here. Drank half gallon of vodka every 2 days. Had to be medically detoxed 3x and was in liver failure. On any given day my BP was 150/90 and my BAC was .500 which to most is a lethal amount. I quit 4 months ago and I'm so grateful to be alive! I'm only 34 years old and have a lot of life to live. I used to drink a lot. Around 2 bottles of Whiskey a day. Then in September 2019, I went to a bar and started drinking a beer, when I suddenly noticed that I was feeling that my face was rushing with blood, had a unusually stuffy nose, and had difficulty breathing. So much that I had to leave from there without even finishing my first glass of that beer. I tried drinking another day, but same thing happened. Later on that same month, I was diagnosed with alcohol allergy. I had been drinking for around 15 years since when I was in college. And suddenly alcohol allergy happened. That was the last time I drunk. Now after around 2 years, I have received promotions in my job, at least tripled my salary, and have started bodybuilding which I was passionate about when I was a teenager.

Alcoholism runs in my family and I quit January 1, 2021. I died for 4 minutes with a BAC of .52. My drinking was getting out of hand and I knew it was. I was up to 2 bottles of vodka a day and I drank whenever I could. I would wake up at 3 am and reach for my vodka to stop the withdrawals. When I finally bottomed out, was when I died from alcohol poisoning. The doctor said my liver was very damaged and my pancreas was very swollen. I knew I had to change and I was given a second chance. After the doctor said I was at death's doorstep, I quit. I didn't need rehab or AA because I knew I was killing myself. The withdrawals were the worst but worth it in the end. I have been sober for a year now and I feel so much better. I will be cheering for anyone out there trying to get sober. You got this!

Your story is inspiring I’m 17 and had a really bad problem with drinking id drink every single day for about 2 years id get into trouble was always getting hurt going to the woods at night with friends id even sit in my room and drink vodka tell I fell asleep just shot after shot. Even before work (which was still capable of doing my job) everytime I’d go through a bottle of vodka to myself every 2 days I notice the affects on my body it was terrible. I knew I needed to stop but felt I couldn’t because it was so easy to just keep drinking and feeling the way I felt it was incredibly hard to be without. After all that I finally told myself it was time to stop so far I’m a month and a week strong and I never thought I’d make it this far. I’m disappointed I had to deal with all this at my age but I’m so proud of my decision now I feel much better.

My husband and myself used to drink @ least a 12 pack and a 5th of Jager each on a daily basis and that was just me and him hanging out at home. I don't even wanna think about how much more we drank when we go out partying. I drank like that from the time I was 19 till I was 32. Right after turning 32 I started blacking out more and more until it was everytime I drank no matter how much I drank and also started becoming pretty aggressive/violent. Then the hangovers started lasting longer, like literally 3 days. To shorten the story a couple months after turning 33 on Christmas Eve 2015 to exact I took my last drink and haven't had a single desire to reach for a bottle since! I didn't even realize I was 6 years sober till I started writing this! 🤯🥳😁😁😁

@@polarbarrrs I can only speak for myself, people are different. I go to restaurants and wherever there's good food that Like. I don't go to bars because everybody there is geared towards getting drunk and it's not a cool dinning experience. I learned to have a good time by removing alcohol and when you do that, the things you do for fun are a lot better quality and geared toward what YOU like. To sum it up, it's a little selfish and totally self indulging. And the crowds and the drunk " friends" are not missed and totally avoided. When you drink, your friends are really drinking partners validating each other's drinking habits. They will continue without you, or they can join you at a table, not the bar. Most stay at the bar but the ones who join you are your real friends and probably not alcoholics. It's really boring and obnoxious to stand at a bar until 2 am when you don't drink. Well, those are my thoughts and experiences. I hope they helped explain a little bit and help you to be selfish to yourself. Good luck. ✌️

I would drink every day until I got tired and fell asleep for over a year or maybe 2. The last 3 days I did that I would wake up with a pulsating pain where my kidneys are. I decided to stop and have been sober for 3 days now. Have had constant temptations but I would think about that pain I felt and notice it's definitely a warning sign. I haven't felt pain since I decided to stop. I'm looking to make it more permanent aswell because I was in great shape but fell into a depression and stopped working out during my alcoholic phase and I feel like a slug. I want to get that quality of life back that I had before. Wish you luck in your life.

A Friend shows me this video and I paused it to write a comment : I'm French. Wine and alcohol is also asocial construction here. Although I know that even in France, drinking alone is considered sad and a symptome for addiction. Now that I process those informations, I know I am an alcoholic and I promise to my friend I'll quit alcohol for good in 2024. After, I'll quit smoking. I already quitted anti-depressor medication this year and caught back with my parents. One step at a time, they say. Good Luck and Happy New Year to you, wherever you are, and remember you're valid, brave, and strong 😊

Must be nice not being an addict. When you suffer from alcoholism. Going more than a week without alcohol seems/ is impossible. Im starting a treatment called the Sinclair Mathis using Naltrexone in a few days, in hopes of reversing my addiction. For anyone who’s feeling hopeless… I HIGHLY encourage you to look up “Claudia Christian, TED talk on the Sinclair method”!!! Turns out, you don’t have to stay an addict. And practice/ torture yourself with complete sobriety in order to heal and turns out you can cure your alcoholism and get rid of your cravings!

Hi, I'm Timber, and I'm an alcoholic with 18 months into recovery. I am not among those who can have a glass of wine. I will drink the whole bottle and ask for more. I nearly killed myself after several years of heavy drinking, and was in the hospital AGAIN. As usual, I was asked if I wanted to go to rehab to help me stop drinking. This time I said yes, and I meant it. I meant it so much that I graduated from rehab 3 weeks later, and have not had a drop of alcohol since. I know my body likes that, and so does my brain. I pray for all alcoholics and addicts to find their light at the end of their dark tunnel.

After heavy daily beer drinking for past 6 years I quit over 200 days ago. What a blessing to have my desire removed and my obsession to drink again gone. I tried many times to do it alone and never could stay stopped for longer than a week or two. Longest ever was a month but that was only once and i knew it wouldnt last without more help since i live alone. Joined AA and it is the best thing that ever happened to me. Learn to live without alcohol. Even a little is damaging to so much of the body and rewires the brain to be in anxiety fear or anger. Every time you drink your brain is moving towards more habitual and impulsive thinking (even when youre not drinking) until your willpower to stop or do much of anything is completely gone. And dont listen to the studies that say there are some health benefits to a drink or two a day. You can get the same benefits and more from the fundamentals such as exercise, drinking more water, getting sunshine, proper diet, and being of service to others.

Day 5 I did tons of yard work and cleaned my chicken coop. Day 6 I cleaned my horribly messy back porch. Had night sweats again. Day 7 I threw my back out going to the bathroom 😂. Today, I’m in bed recovering. Too much energy, not enough core strength. But I’m not going back.

7 years sober after 30 years of drinking. Ended up guzzling vodka round the clock on days off during the last few years. Almost died from accidentally cutting digital artery whilst drunk and that was my wake up call. Hit rock bottom at that point and needed to look at why I drank. Went deep into the whys and wherefores of my life, understood trauma, found forgiveness and acceptance and have never looked back. Alcohol was just a symptom. I now have self esteem, self respect, impenetrable boundaries and an optimism I never knew existed. If you feel there is no hope, trust me, there is.

You can Log into ( peripheral neuropathy) also ( National library of medicine) because I just found out on my own that alcohol can cause seizures. Back in February 1991 I had a seizure at home and woke up 5 minutes later and didn’t think much about it, then at work when it was time to go home I felt lightheaded and I couldn’t even get my keys out of my pocket. So they took me to the hospital and I was there for 4 days and I was diagnosed with encephalitis ( which is swelling of the brain) so my Neurologist sent me to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota because I was his first patient with that condition. And then the Dr in Minnesota also said that I was his first patient. But I remember if alcohol was mentioned in our conversation, but I took an MRI exam and found that the part of my brain that controls my immune system had permanent damage. So he said that when I have a seizure my brain automatically sends out the white blood cells to attack a virus ( but there is no virus to attack) so then the blood cells will start to attack my nerves. And the coating on my nerves is called the myelin sheath. So they put me on Prednisone a steroid drug to try to stop the brain from sending the wrong signal but it didn’t work. I was on it for a year and gained 30 pounds and had to gradually decrease my dosage for a year to get completely off this terrible drug. And 33 years later a am still having seizures but I am on Keppra and Zonisamide . But my seizures are very mild, but they still activate my immune system because of my brain not being able to control my immune system. And on Saturday April 27, 2024 I was scrolling through my phone and came across this website ( National Library of Medicine). So I dug through it and found that alcohol can give you seizures and I was still drinking about a beer a day and that is all that it takes to keep your body poisonous with alcohol. I haven’t had a mild seizure for 50 days now and my foot is still burning, where 4 years ago 50 days it felt half way decent. So now that I know that alcohol can give you seizures I am giving up alcohol to see if my foot pain goes away in a month. I told my Neurologist in Grand Rapids, Michigan that when I have a seizure my white blood cells were automatically sent out because my brain could not control them, but I didn’t tell her that I was at Mayo Clinic 33 years ago. And she said that didn’t seem right. But now the next time I see her I think I will tell her everything I have found out.

@@incremental_failure I’ll give you the whole story because if you have any of these symptoms I suggest seeking medical attention sooner rather than later. my very first symptom was my body literally rejecting alcohol. There were days I’d drink and I’d begin to wretch but I’d just power through it and continue to drink (Even when there was blood coming up I still drank). I completely ignored these symptoms because I didn’t think it was possible for someone my age to get this disease. It wasn’t until the jaundicing that I started to think that something might be wrong. I remember calling my sister over FaceTime and asking her to look at my eyes and if they seemed yellow. She was concerned of course but told me I could be overreacting and that I should just schedule an appointment with a doctor. I of course ignored this and it wasn’t until I got a ton of welts on my body after playing basketball that I really started worrying I googled all of this and stopped drinking immediately. 2 days later I threw up a cup of blood and rushed to the hospital. The doctors there were the ones who told me I was sick. This all happened over the course of 6 months from august2021-February2022. I’m still alive and well but my liver is getting worse looks like I’m going to need a transplant soon but I know I can beat this.

After leaving China in September that mentality helped. I feel so much better and have been working out again! I made a huge mistake doing it for that long but I’m happy I woke up and am sober! I'm 29 and I don't drink because when I was in 9th grade I was catching the bus for school. The bus had the stop sign out. Speed limit is 25. My friend was crossing the road to catch the bus this guy was drunk. He was driving 65mph. He ran my friend over and killed him. I went to his viewing it was a closed casket. It was terrible. When the guy got out of jail he knocked on my friends door. His dad came out and saw the man who killed his child. He got down on his knees he was crying begging him for forgiveness. He truely apologized and my friend's dad forgave him.

I’m about 4 days in. The first three days are definitely the worst, but today i woke up with so much energy! I promise it gets better. To anyone that’s reading this and trying to quit, you can do it. It helped me mentally to not tell myself “I’m quitting drinking today!” But instead tell myself, “I’m going to make myself live better every day.” Even if it’s a little less every day, you will eventually have a day where your body doesn’t like it anymore. The never-ending hair of the dog that bit you isn’t forever. It can start now. :)

To anyone struggling with withdrawal or want to quit, you got this! I highly recommend seeing a doctor before detoxing though. I drank a fifth of vodka per day for the past 2 and a half years. My dad passed away a couple weeks ago and I decided I needed to change. Made an appointment with my doctor and quit drinking safely. I’m 18 days sober today. All the initial withdrawal symptoms are gone but I’m still dealing with some lingering symptoms. Mainly anxiety and increased heart rate. I have a cardiology appointment in a few weeks to see the extent of the damage I’ve done. I don’t know if it’s reversible but it definitely won’t be reversible if I kept drinking. Again, to anyone going through this fight, you got this!

I feel like this was my case as well. I had bad social anxiety (and I didn’t even know it til the end) and always had to have a drink in my hand . I would drink to keep from feeling “awkward “ in social settings and that was a lot of the time so of course the drinks disappeared quickly. Eventually near the end my habits made me isolate myself and become a regular at my local bar, even goin in alone to sit and have a 3 beers and 2 doubles for a regular sitting and the weekends was even morel. 2 years 3 months in sobriety and My social anxiety actually diminished after about 5 months of quitting. I now always have to have a bottle of water in hand lol.

I started drinking when I was 18. Loved beer. Never thought I was more than a social drinker. The years went by, then decades. Expanded my alcohol to occasional whiskey. I turned 68 last year, a very sharp blood specialist doctor ordered a special ultrasound of my liver and that’s when I found out how much damage I had done to myself. All those years, even with routine blood work, my liver never revealed how bad it was. Until that ultrasound that maps the stiffness and blood flow. I have cirrhosis and scarring of my liver. I immediately stopped drinking and all Tylenol. I’ve been sober now for just over 4 months and seeing a specialist to stay on top of the damage. I pray that my liver will heal.

68 now, and have drunk alcohol since my teens. As others have said, I was drinking to overcome anxiety and also to numb my feelings of low self esteem and depression. The death of my parents and both my older siblings perpetuated my need to drink more. Read and listen all you want to others that have battled with this terrible addiction, but it’s only you that can make the decision to quit. I just decided one day that I wanted to stop poisoning my body and live a healthier life. Yes, it was obviously tough at first, as it is with all addictions and habits, but it does get easier as the weeks roll into months. I’ve never felt better physically and mentally as I do now.
