As always, another stellar video from a great world-class professor/doctor/teacher. But, of course, we can't forget about the cofactors needed to run the enzymes, such as zinc is required to activate alcohol dehydrogenase, and Mo is required in order to activate aldehyde dehydrogenase. So every molecule of Co2 must be converted into carbonic acid by the zinc-dependent enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which is needed to convert Co2 into CA.So once again, the minerals are critical factors to running our enzymes, and most of us are minerally bankrupt...

The best video on alcohol metabolism. I know this video was about alcohol, I appreciate you mentioning that cigarettes smoking can cause ROS in the same pathway in the Endoplasmic Reticulum! Thank you!

I am a 68 year old male : 6 feet tall, and I weigh 12 stones (78 kg), that is I have a great BMI, and I play tennis and I walk my dog daily. I consumed alcohol regularly at a reasonable rate for years, and during a routine check-up both I and my doc were surprised to find out that I have a fatty liver. So, I chucked the poison completely as I came to the realisation that it was slowly killing me.

Fascinating. I need some advice: In the last year, i've noticed that even after 1 small glass of wine OR 1 single shot of rum, my nose and cheeks go red and feels warm to the touch. I'm approaching 30yrs of age and this has never been an issue in the past. I'm assuming this is acetaldehyde after watching this video. My question though is how do i reduce this in the body? What advise would you have for me and others in my situation? I'm keen to detox the over production of acetaldehyde if you have any tips? Thank you!

I was told by my GP that my Neurosurgeon said my balance problems are caused by Peripheral Neuropathy (lower limbs), he allegely said I got that because I had my fair share of alcohol, I did have a good amount but my liver is OK, I have no Diabeties so what caused the Neuropathy? I started getting dizzy at about 75, I am 80 now and taking 50+ (that's what they are called guys) vitamins to repair the Myelin sheaths on the neurons in my feet and ankles and any Vertigo I once had has been treated and is no longer present and I know the absolute difference. I always assumed if I drink only until starting to feel happy it was time to stop thinking it has only now reached the brain, I thought 2 standard drinks would never get to my brain and nervous system.

acetate or acetyl-coa? Is the acetyl-coa the final product and acetate is an intermediate product?
@Hexose-bisphosphate
@Hexose-bisphosphate 13 күн бұрын
Acetate is produced by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase from acetaldehyde. The acetate can form an acetyl coA by acetyl coA synthetase
@Hexose-bisphosphate
@Hexose-bisphosphate 13 күн бұрын
Because the enzyme is acetyl coA SYNTHETASE, it uses an atp molecule which is broken down into amp and a pyrophosphate

I have a question if anyone can answer this. How does alcohol gives energy/ calories when it's essentially getting converted to water and co2.
@Hexose-bisphosphate
@Hexose-bisphosphate 13 күн бұрын
The acetyl coA being produced could enter the Tca cycle releasing co2 molecules but also energy. Reduced hydrogen carriers could also be used in the electron transport chain to produce energy and water

When exactly is an individual offically drunk? How many ounces of alcohol before one crosses that line? What blood alcohol concentration makes a person officially chemically drunk? .02? .05? .08? Until we can find that exact offical chemical measurement, we can not say consuming alcohol is acceptable. It is better that all of us promote, support, teach and practice abstainance from all mind altering chemicals, alcohol being the most harmful.

I have the same thing except mine is for farts. Instead of telling you if you’re drunk, it tells you what you ate. My girlfriend gave it to me because she said she doesn’t fart...ever. She holds it in until it eventually travels out of her mouth. She doesn’t poop either, it’s the craziest thing. Apparently her body is 100% efficient at digestion. If she did happen to fart, it definitely wouldn’t stink, it’d be just like regular air. I don’t fart either, but that’s because I’m on methadone & it completely paralyzes the bowels. I have no clue where the food goes, it’s a miracle! Lord!
