All of the dance moves may not be for me either, but I am not as cute as I used to be. I love the tradition of the black college bands. Its roots go back to military style precision, the entertainment of the black minstrel shows, and the pride of African culture. Even back then, our forefathers took the "sting" out of the minstrel shows to their advantage. The college students who are band members are usually the best of the best. Between band practice and their college studies, they have to be disciplined, smart, and talented. I guess everyone sees things from their perspective. I see talented, hard-working college students and future leaders of America. You see twerking and nakedness. I guess my focus is different. Different stokes for different folks.

The whole band- cause we are only as strong as our weakest link, my director used to always say- is just fan-dang-tastic. in my younger days there was a time when band consumed me- it kinda has to in it's season if you want to be your best. but i had some of the most fun, and felt some of the most powerful emotions i have ever felt thanks to that crew and our time together. but most of all the band instills a stick-to-it-ness in you that will assist your future life more than you can even imagine right now- both physically and mentally. the skill set you have been developing and honing to its finest, in practices and games and competitions for years, will pay dividends unto you for the rest of your lives- because these are the talents of champions. you know how to work as a member of a team, how to give your best always and everywhere, how to perform in stressful situations, how to have pride in what you've accomplished but also how to remain humble because you also know the determination and sacrifice it took to get you there...and never forget to always hold your head high and your expectations higher
