I'm real old school back when it wasn't about playing loud and overflowing and calling it power. We played strong in lower registers supporting our tones and listening to each other to make sure we were in the "pocket ". I'm still getting use to this new style.

Having grown up close to Orangeburg, I had the privilege to enjoy SC State. That sousaphone section played some juicy fat chords at some of the H.S. marching band competitions. I miss those days.

It all just depends on how you puff your cheeks. If you're puffing your cheeks in order to play and have sound, you're doing it wrong. If your cheeks just puff from the pure cranking, but you can still do the same thing and it sounds the same without puffing, then it's alright. At least, that's how I was taught
