From what I remember a sanctuary city would be a place for people who were so abused and in danger for their lives else severe bodily harm from their foreign governments they would be granted a safe place to reside. What I have seen pictures of in the news are pictures of regular ordinary people who still believe it is 1562 else 1776 and they think there is all kinds of open free land here in the U.S. of A. It is a very crowded 2023 in Chicago. The migrants I see on the news do not appear very battered nor do they appear to be arriving from war torn areas. In my opinion,it does not appear the current elected officials are interpreting the definitions of sanctuary, asylum ,etc correctly The migrants do not appear to be abused nor neglected. They just appear to be people who did not get everything they wanted from their foreign governments. I do not think their situations warranted sanctuary status.

No. There are tens of thousands of Chicagoans struggling to get by and every dollar diverted for this is a dollar not invested in communities, is a dollar not invested in after-school programs, is a dollar not invested in patching roads, and is another dollar they need to make up by putting up more speeding and red light cameras to disproportionately impact working class and low-income individuals. Adding thousands of people to Chicago means thousands of rental units taken off of the market - in a time where affordable housing comes at a premium - and requiring them to work puts downward pressures on wages and increases competition for working class jobs.

It was put in place by Mayor Harold Washington in the 80s who was pressured by the Hispanic, Irish and Italian immigrants/migrants council members. He thought he would be in their good graces.
