Hi, Friends! I've been asked for years to make more videos for parents. I'm finally getting there! Before I make dozens or hundreds of videos, I'd like to know if the new videos are 1) helpful, 2)easy and fun to watch and 3)engaging enough to watch another one? Thanks so much for your comments. I look forward to reading each and every one! I can't figure out how to connect them to the Aldea channel, so please go to my personal channel: Donna D'Hoostelaere.

I'm the student in Montessori method. Your video on disciplining a child makes lots of sense. Both videos thoroughly explains exactly as I learned 'Disciplining a Child' in my lecture room.Thank you very much

I LOVE this. I have been a two year old teacher for almost 5 years and this video has helped me out more than most of those full day classes we attend for our hours in daycare thank you!

Great videos! I really like when you’re giving some examples on what to say to your child because that can be really difficult sometimes.

Finally some sense. It's a shame too many parents don't even bother to learn this stuff until they have already had children.

I'm preparing for a talk on discipline in the Montessori classroom, and came across your video. You mentioned at the beginning how we could talk for hours about this subject, and you are so correct. Everything you said is on target with what I believe, but I have an entirely different hour talk about different points about discipline. It's a never-ending discussion, isn't it? :) Thanks for giving me more to think about.

This is a FASCINATING video I absolutely fell inlove with it! :)Very helpfull thank you so much for making videos like this. Made me feel much better, it's great for parents that have had a tough childhood and are raised thinking its ok.. It has always bothered me the way that i was taken care (by the person that was supposed to love me the most). You have the feeling its NOT ok but igorance makes people believe it is. There are always consequences for our acts. and becoming a espectacular mom..

Miss Donna, excellent & very useful video! wish I could have seen this 25 years ago! but I do agree, when kids are little, you have to be their Mum, not their friend. Even if sometimes they hate you for it.... Do you have any advice for teaching little kids 3 - 6 years of age, in relatively large groups, gaining and holding their attention?

I had my very first experience today in a Montessori school .. but I have no training at all! Although I've taught 6-8 year olds English, I often found myself challenged by uncooperative behaviour. Today I had 5 year olds who didn't want to listen or follow instructions.

As far as picking up the toys goes it’s pretty simple. You say do you want to pick up the toys or should I? If they don’t respond or if they don’t pick them up you pick them up and put them somewhere where they can’t get them you don’t tell them you’re going to do it you just do it.

If one really knows Montessori, one will know this kind of discipline is not right. Dr. Montessori said every child is good, and he has the inner drive to be so. He doesn't learn to be good from outside. Give the the chance to work, to satisfy their need for knowledge, independence, they will be good. Also, when always Invite them, never force them to do anything. If they don't accept it, its your fault for not finding the right point of interest yet. You are the one who guide them, not to show your authority over them. If you child shouted at you that you were the worst mom, then you did something seriouly wrong. Experienced Montessori teachers are calm, firm, but always friendly. On guiding your child during the year 2-3, redirecting to objects, down to small details is what really work, because kids at this age really interested in learning name and colors, structure, etc about objects. If he doesn't want to go pee, attract him by saying what is the fun thing in there: flushing, washing hands with bubbles, drying hands, etc, lots of fun things for him to enjoy. When I stop my son from doing something, I always tell him in advance, how much time he has left, what we are going to do next, what the fun side of the coming activity. If he exists on doing the current activity, I explain to him its time to stop, and we will do it Again, yes that is the key word that he is not losing it, its just time to do other things for now. Overall, the video is good for non-Montessorian only. Those who knows more about Montessori will not rate this high.

I'm not ok with your point there. I thinks its a point of view on Montessori, but, to me, Donna reach another one that is needed as well. Life isn't always about fun. If you make your children react only to fun, won't he be only attracted by having fun in the future? When its time to think, to read serious stuff, to learn and only have fun at the peek of the process, after hard work, won't he be negative about it? Lazy? It seems to me (but that's only my opinion there!) that Montessori is not only about being friendly as a parent, or a teacher.

I couldn't agree with you more. We don't use these types of discipline in the classroom because we don't need to. We have materials and a completely prepared environment to assist us in guiding them to self-discipline. This talk was for parents who try to use the best possible approach to parenting but they need help "in the moment." In the classroom, I can allow a child to doing something incorrectly because I know that using Grace & Courtesy lessons will be the easiest way to solve the problems. Re-presentation of the materials is possible. Watching other children perform more appropriately is possible. None of this happens at home. I am looking at the long haul, as are the parents. But the reality is that we don't have the children 24 hours a day in the classroom to make the best possible use of Montessori methods. And every child is different--how they respond to their parents is different. Parents need a plethora of ideas to use in the moment to help them and their child be successful without violence and without anger. No one is more dedicated than I to Dr. Montessori and her methods. But I am equally a realist in the home, giving parents permission to not always be perfect and to find whatever way they can to make their home and their relationship with their child peaceful.

Couldn't agree with your response more, Donna! I taught for years before becoming a parent and I have learned that there are true differences. You do not and cannot always have a prepared environment and the perfect, attractive, next activity. Taking authoritative action (without violence or anger) is often really necessary. Parenting is tough, as you often have to roll with the punches in circumstances that are not ideal.
