Aldershot Cody kite

My 939th kite video. This new version of the classic Cody kite should please those who want to acquire a Cody without the high cost of the more up-market versions. Of course it's not as good as those, but it's attractive and fun to fly, and a lot more affordable. New Tech Kites should have paid more attention to quality control, but that's not unusual for them, in my experience.

You wrote 'New Tech Kites should have paid more attention to quality control'. How true!! I assembled my brand new kite in the house and took it outside. It immediately fell apart with spars falling out onto the ground. Reason : the joiner tubes had not been glued properly and were all loose. Solution : wrap tubes with one layer of tape or re-glue. Fitting the loops into the slotted ends is a real pain. You have to fold the loop in half and then insert it. Tricky! Then if you do one end, it pops out when doing the other end. Grrrrrrr!! We even had problems assembling it with two people. Solution : hold loops in place onto spar with small rubber bands. There is a lack of attention to detail here.

I hear that New Tech may not be in business much longer. I don't know how true that is, but they certainly don't do much to show that they deserve to survive.

I live in New Zealand. I buy all my kites from America and China, because we have no kite shops here. I am 81 years old, and I don't think that I shall ever travel outside New Zealand again.

@@JimNicholls really ? It's funny and at the age of 81 you still enjoy flying a cody kite, I'm from the Philippines, I've wanted to have a cody kite for a long time, we really don't have anything to buy here. I hope I also have it so that I can copy something if I can think of making it too.

Thanks Jim. I did things the other way round from you. I was born in New Zealand and grew up in Invercargill. On a visit to the UK in the late 70s I met the girl who became my wife and have lived here in Somerset ever since. My brother lives a stones throw away from New Brighton beach and we visited him in Feb 2020. Didn't see you though!

Hi. I have just bought the Spirit of Air Cody kite, here in the UK, and I am very pleased with it. It looks similar to, and about the same size as, the one in your video. It seems well made, it is easy to launch single handed and it is a very steady flier. I wasted no time in replacing the supplied line and small flimsy handle though! Thank you for your videos, I'm enjoying them!

They are all made in China, of course, and maybe these are from the same factory. I have had big, hard-pulling kites sent from China with the same silly handle and thin twisted line. Why do they bother? I hope you're getting some good flying opportunities, as I know the weather hasn't been kind there recently. That's one thing that makes me possibly glad that I moved to NZ, although there's a lot I miss from "home".

Jim if one could still find the New Tech Cody Pro would you recommend it over the newer Aldershot? I seem to recall another review on Amazon or maybe KZbin saying that the spars fell out in flight or something. I see that you had issues with yours as well.

Mark, I no longer have the Cody Pro, but I remember it was a good kite, and flew well. The only drawback for me was the colour, which didn't stand out well in the sky. If you are happy with the colour and can still find the kite somewhere, I think it would be a good buy. The Aldershot is not any better, I'm sure, just a brighter colour.

I know from experience that this is a light wind kite. With harder wind the large wing bends almost to breaking point. I tried it to make it into a real cody with bridle lines from the long wings to the short wings. It made it stronger still absolutly not as strong as my real cody, still a very nice kite.

I flew it today in winds of about 15 mph or a little more, Freddy. I wouldn't want to risk it in much more. Recommended maximum is 20 mph, and I think that would certainly be the limit without endangering the kite. As you say, it's a light-wind kite really.

A very colourful Cody against a blue sky, happy days ! strange that the bridle is attached at the very front. presumably it is only the weight of the kite that gives it any angle of attach, normally Cody kites have a four leg bridle, but perhaps this Cody is also intend for younger flyers and the pull in strong winds with a four leg bridle would be fearsome.

actually 2 lines are enough for a cody if right the two lower lines slack if it is at height and dances on the wind. I have come across this before, Ian, but as you say, the more up-market Codys have 4-leg bridles, as with the Treczoks Cody I used to have (there's a video of it on this channel.) The pull might have been a factor, or just the simplicity of having only 2 legs. It is, of course designed for a different market to the more expensive models.

I've seen the cody kite before in videos and always thought it looked very complex. After seeing your video showing it from various angles, it seems to just be a double box kite with wings. It seems to be quite an effective design and quite stable in flight. Interesting history as well.

A double box with wings is not a bad description, although not everything that fits it would be considered a Cody. As I'm sure you've seen, Raoul, there is a resemblance between this (and other modern Cody kites) and Samuel Cody's original design, but in scale, materials, weight and performance, the modern "copies" are far different.

Whats the name of the kind of line that you use for that kite and where can i buy it

Flying line is included with it. I think I was using 50lb braided dacron. Most kite stores sell braided dacron line in various strengths. I usually buy from Into The Wind or Picture Pretty Kites, or from Emma kites in China.

I've never had a chance to get the Spirit of Air kites, Harry, as they don't seem to be sold outside the UK and postage from there to NZ is very expensive. Royal Mail won't send anything longer than 100cm, and courier post is very dear.

Buying spars here is as impossible as buying kites, Harry. We have too few people, and certainly too few kite-fliers, to make a real kite store here a possibility. Anyway, I have far too many kites already, and no money to buy more - in fact, I plan to sell some of mine soon. I'll look forward to seeing your video of the SoA Cody.
