I reckon a lot of people may be suspicious of the strangely named beers in Aldi and Lidl and veer away towards the usual British brewed stuff, Stella, Budweisser, St Miguel, et al. Yet as you say, this is brewed by the Palm Brewery in Belgium and they have an incredibly long history of brewing excellent beer. So this has to be good and yet another one to look out for on Aldi's shelves I do believe that it's maybe the British alcohol taxing system now which is why our beers, even from abroad, are getting weaker. Or maybe they think we will just sup anything that has a beer label on it and that may be true of a lot of people.

I’ve posted before on the subject of excise duty but here is the short version. Alcoholic drinks, including beer, have always been taxed based on their alcohol content, the previous UK tax regime for beer being £19.08 per alcohol % per hectolitre (last revised 13th March 2017). So the higher the ABV the higher the duty i.e the tax incentive to reduce ABV has always been there. It’s not a new thing ! The new rates effective since 1st August 2023 have introduced banding but the vast majority of beers fall within the 3.5-8.4 % band anyway, which was set at £21.01 per alcohol % per hectolitre (£19.08 if on draught, note this was the same as the old rate although I think the latest budget reduced the draught rate by a penny a pint ?). Blame the UK brewers not the Government.

Leffe used to be my all time favourite beer. It was my first choice when I was feeling a bit flush, but last time I drank it, I decided never to buy it again. I assumed it was me that had changed, but now I realise its the Leffe that's gone down hill. Can't wait to try the aldi version. Thanks for the review.

leffe ain’t the same anymore…at least duvel’s still got the mojo.I can’t believe the quality of beers these days. I went to my local and had a few pints of sam smith’s lager, which is probably the best beer in a pub. I fancied something a bit lighter to finish off so I tried a cruzcampo…..never been so disappointed- the most watery piss on draught. I can’t believe it!

What I find with Aldi is that they introduce a product eg the san marco Spanish lager, crunchy peanut butter and probably this life too. It’s all good until it has made market impact then they roll back on the quality. The san marco is not how it was a few weeks ago and the crunchy peanut butter is basicallysmooth and full of oil. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience?

As for St Pierre its been around atleast since 2021 and I have bought it here i Sweden, dont think its a Leffe clone but just another belgian blonde, and its not brewed for Aldi. I always enjoyed Leffe (Blonde and Brune), when Blonde went from 6.6 to 6.0 % I still enjoyed it although it wasn’t quite as good. I went for a while without drinking any and in the meantime got COVID for the first time a few months ago which has affected my taste buds. I’ve recently had three 500ml Leffe Blonde bottles and it was disappointing although I thought your 5/10 was a bit mean. I’m drinking my first can of St.Pierre as I ramble on, it’s definitely a nicer more interesting drink. I’ll have to buy a bottle of Leffe Brune which I don’t think has been changed for the UK to see if it tastes the same before I had COVID.

It's basically diluted now. I feel like I should have a little memorial service as I've lost a best friend! I actually tried Saint Pierre a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it but it was 2 quid a can so I've given it a miss since. I believe it's just dropped in price though I could be wrong. Ive been saying this for years. Should have released a 4% 'light' Stella and kept the original at 5.2% to keep everyone happy. But then that didn't work with Becks, remember Becks Vier 4%, discontinued and then regular Becks dropped from 5% to 4% a year later. Also Budweiser had it's abv reduced twice even though there was Bud light available.

Real Leffe i.e. sold in Belgium is 6.6% ABV. It's not great, it's rather "OK" beer.

Leffe has never been cloudy! was the beer that got me into craft/belgian/german beers so will always have a soft spot for it. its cloyingly artificially sweet now, it used to be a much better beer! not tried they Aldi version, we dont have Aldi in NI. the Lidl version isnt very good though

How do Lidl and Aldi get better quality beers, from small breweries, usually from the country of the style of beer, cheaper than these mass produced low quality beers, majority of which are brewed in the UK?

amazes me that Lidl/Aldi arent constantly in the courts for "passing off" other brands. Maybe the "mainstream" brand companies have just given up at this stage and accepted it.

They aren't passing anything off, to do that they'd have to be calling this Leffe and using the same design. It's perfect legal and actually encouraged to create clones, it's called an open and competitive free market.

@@TheChodax certainly in this instance with the Leffe, there wouldnt be passing off but in general it's more complicated than what you allude to. There must be a misrepresentation made by a trader in the course of trade that's calculated to injure the goodwill of another trader AND which causes actual damage to a business or goodwill of the trader.

@@4exgold I understand that, for instance the can would have to follow the major design elements. This St Pierre can is a different colour, texture, font style and positioning, the art bares no resemblance apart from stained glass. There would not be enough grounds for legal action as there are plenty of beers with pictures of churches with stained glass etc. Now the original design of St Étienne many years ago was very close to the old Stella design, it got yanked as soon as there was a whiff of legal action. Aldi have sailed close to the wind many times but ultimately do just enough to avoid action, Titan bar design and packaging being a classic example. Mars could not be happy about that but did not have enough of a leg to stand on. ;)
