I'm back in Central London today and have a bit of a controversial video and a restaurant that I've been asked to review quite a few times. Angus Steakhouse has been going viral recently due to Londoners encourage people to eat there in order to keep tourists out of some of London's top restaurants are they're too busy... a bit naughty!

Well... Its London. You can live entirely off tourists that fall into the place just because they have to end up somewhere. Even if they never come back. Actually this is why England is known for very average food if you dont necessarily know the good places to go to.

That was a 10* review, Gary. One of your most entertaining ever and a delightful showcase of your full GURNING repertoire. I've awarded you 10 for the quality of your facial expressions and the disappointments they conveyed and the * for being so polite despite their best and ultimately successful attempts to consistently underwhelm and underdeliver. Their shocking reputation is wholly justified as is the 1.5 you gave them for their overpriced food. The menu design looked like a hangover from a 1970s Berni Inn.

I’ve had a special place in my heart for Angus Steakhouses since the 90’s….a dark, sneering place of disdain and hostility. That steak was sub-par meat, carelessly butchered. And the sauce appeared to be thickened with starch. You took one for the team here, Gary. Your suffering confirmed that these places are still as bad as they’ve always been.

UK farmers can't compete with foreign producers except for specialty items. This is not new - it has been the case for over 150 years. The only exception was when the UK was a member of the EU. The UK farmers benefited from EU policies and subsidies. Needless to say that is no longer the case.

I’m in my 50’s and have lived in S/E London all my life. As a kid I used to go by what they were then called Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse and always wanted to go in but never did. Funnily enough fairly recently I looked at reviews with my nostalgic eyes, and saw red flags - thanks Gary, you’ve just confirmed that my nostalgia counts for nothing and I should walk on by!

I had no idea these still existed. They were always pretty awful. The steaks were notoriously dry, most food was overcooked and the staff were probably the worst waiting staff in the country, certainly in London. Now i speak as somebody who ate regularly, about twice a week for between 2-3 years in the branch at picadilly ( i believe it was actually at the top of Haymarket if my very old memory serves me right). That was somewhere between 1988 - 1992. Now i hear people ask why did i go there so regularly if it was so bad? ...... Because it was free! (My boss had some sort of an arrangement with the restaurant. But even though it was free, i still felt like asking for a refund 😃 The only people that ever seemed to go there, were us workers who were getting freebies and poor ripped off tourists. Who all seemed to leave looking so miserable! I really am amazed that these places still exist. It can't possibly be the same foreign owners? I guess it's possible that the company name may have been sold off or the chain must have changed hands or even maybe they are just franchised out? Whatever the answer, it's good to know that they are just as reliably awful as they always were. Ahh i do love continuity. Bon appétit Gary

With so many fake online reviews out there, there's ONE thing we can always be sure of: "Gary Eats" reviews are always Fair, Honest, and Informative ..and they make me Hungry for More.

Apparently in the press they were reporting that Londoners were “review bombing” Angus Steakhouses and giving them exaggerated 5 star reviews to entice tourists so that they avoid popular ‘local’ food places. Someone had mentioned that tourists were now turning up en-masse to his regular sandwich takeaway and it was taking him an extortionate amount of time to be served. Therefore, in an effort to combat this and other ‘local haunts’ being overrun with tourists they started a online campaign to give glowing recommendations to restaurants which in reality have poor reviews, such as Angus Steakhouses so that the tourists would attracted to go there…I don’t know if this is the true reason but it makes you wonder.

1992 Leicester square, good Friday, everything else closed. 30 min to order, an hour for service. Worst meal ever, I was about to lose it with the manager when the guy at the next table saved me the trouble. Plummy voiced character tore a strip off him in the best possible way.

I've only been in a Angus Steakhouse once and I thought it was seriously disappointing so I'm not at all surprised you were absolutely brutal in your review Gary. This restaurant chain is stuck in an eighties time warp selling below standard Steaks and chips straight out of a bag to stupid gullible tourists who are fooled into thinking they are entering a high quality steakhouse.They bring shame to the London restaurant scene and I can't understand why they're still open...and this in a city that boasts one of the best steakhouse chains in the world in the shape of Hawksmoor..unbelievably bad and then some.

To give some context, since local Londoners were sick of ‘tourists’ visits the best steak houses in London, they love bombed with fake reviews to the worst steakhouses as a way to trick tourists and free up the actual quality ones. Hi Gary, I have recommended you to go and try out a place called Hiba , they have a few branches and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed and it is very well priced ! Def try one of their shawarmas ! It’s a place I have been eating from for a good few years, and anytime I take someone there they love it ! Do make the effort and go and avoid these tourist trap joint like Angus ! 😂

In fairness, must be really hard being a waiter there. Constantly having to ask each table how the steak is, knowing the quality used and that there's no way to put it right for the customer. But people ultimately vote with their feet and wallets, and if you were the only person in, they won't last long.

As someone who once worked in food prep./catering: I know so many places these days are just 'microwave in the bag'. There's no point complaining, as there's no 'chef' (as such) to do anything about it, just some guy who sticks stuff in the microwave and deep fries frozen produce. I suspect this is one of these!

They used to be virtually on every corner of central London and couldn't work out how they could make a profit in the most expensive areas of the capital. Last time I went was actually the day before 9/11, it was virtually inedible, the thing I really remember was a sorry looking pile of rice on the plate moulded to the shape of a bowl. It must have been sitting under a heat lamp for days, it was like hard plastic. I can't believe this absolute disgrace of a chain still exists!

Thanks Gary, I won't be going into an Angus Steakhouse. Four of us went to my local Miller and Carter last Saturday and the steaks were superb. In fact, I could not remember having better: Two of us had a 12oz rib eye each, one had a 10oz fillet and my wife had a veggie thing. Not long after we arrived, a member of staff apprised us that there had been a medical emergency at a table near to ours (we had not noticed) and, as a result of the perceived inconvenience, our first round of drinks was on the house!

Oh, the reason Angus Steakhouse reviews suddenly shot up is because some Londoners on Reddit decided to mess around. They started posting over-the-top positive reviews about it, calling it amazing, even though it’s usually seen as a bit of a tourist trap. The idea was to steer tourists away from their favourite local spots. Honestly, pretty smart if you think about it!

Hello Gary… Well what can I say. Back in London and ripped off with poor disgusting looking food with shockingly high prices. How on earth does this place carry on doing business.
