I grew up there . My grand parents and I move there in 1970 and there was about 30% whites living there . In 1985 after high school I moved to Houston where I've been since . A couple times I've visited I was devastated at the way the place I grew up had become . I was ashamed I mean it really hurt to show my kids the place where I once lived . So to run across this video makes me proud to see that someone is trying to make it like it was . Just before I left you could start to see the effects of the drugs . So my hats off to Ali Simpson and Melissa Thomas

My grandparents raised my mother and aunt in Norwood, then as they saw the neighborhood declining they moved to what is now Crestline around 1940. The house in Norwood became worthless over time, then was occupied by squatters, then eventually abandoned. The last time my family drove by it the roof had caved in. So it fit in perfectly with all the other formerly nice homes that had caved-in roofs, or had been gutted by fire, or were occupied by squatters. The $10k house they moved to in the Crestline area back then is now worth about 1.5 million according to Zillow. My mother and aunt each married and settled in Mountain Brook in the 1950s. Their houses are valued in the 800k - 1 million range today. Maybe Norwood is on the way back. The attempt to salvage the area is commendable. Maybe someday it will again be a neighborhood people want to live in, rather than a neighborhood that people were smart to flee.

It's 2022, and our neighbors renting next door in Avondale are moving to Norwood. I'm excited for them. We'll miss them.

Norwood has some very beautiful homes my mother n law's house was beautiful. However, behind her were apartments that were run over by drugs and such. It would be great to have one if those homes if you knew you wouldn't have to deal with what comes with the neighborhood. I lived there while waiting for our apartment to be finished and it was kinda scary. Protecting people should have been addressed. If you don't know you can become a victim. A cop pulled me over and said leave before you become a victim.

Right. How could they not mention how dangerous the area is in this video... Setting ignorant people up for disaster.

It will never be much better. Birmingham is going downhill. Take Pride if you want to but why don't people see who tore this neighborhood down?

@@LDuke-pc7kq I did Doordash for 1 year from 2020 -2021 in Birmingham. I didn’t find it to be dangerous at all. I wasnt worried about crime i was more worried about potholes. I delivered to all of the neighborhoods in Birmingham area; gate city, 5 points west, and north Birmingham at all hours.

I hear gunshots often in Norwood. We’ve have two homicides inside of Norwood in recent months. A year ago some guy was shot in 29th street sitting in his car. I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’ve lived here my whole life. For what they are charging for these houses…I’d be angry after moving in just to hear a shootout on the next street.
