I'm 22 now and there's always been an innate fear of getting "older". Not in a sense of aging, but losing the ability to view the good in people and not take everything so seriously. To have fun and never leave your friends behind. As you get older, you witness more of the worst in people and the negativity weighs on you. But you're right Alec, we may not have control over time, but you can always be a kid at heart :')

Nice thing is it doesn't have to be that way. We have a choice. It's funny, when I was your age all I saw was the worst in people and all the negativity. Now, a decade later, I choose to see the good in all who are in my life; even if they're just passing through. I've never been more happy.

Im turning 18 in 4 days. I count the days as if its time running out: 7, 6, 5, 4.. Im anxious. Coz im jumping from the adolescent stage to almost adult stage, and i dont want that. I want to stay a kid. I want to act a kid. Whenever im scared, i just prayed. I listened to this "older" by Alec Benjamin 2 months ago. And just now while scrolling through google discovery (which i unusually do) i saw An MV is released (with a message in it).. I wasnt even about to open it lol, but my mind is telling me "you got to open this. maybe you'll find something" I feel somehow calmed. Like a closure given to me. As if God has made ways to send this message for me through you. just like alec said.. "you dont have to get older if your not ready yet." Only my physical body aged. I dont have to act as my physical body. Its never an obligation. its just a choice. Thanks to Alec Benjamin, for sending this message to me as my time as a 17 year old slowly runs out.

I turned 22 in February. I have the same feelings. Just try to notice the beauty of life every day. An unexpected meeting with an old friend, the smile of a stranger, communication with family, finding new hobbies, learning something new. Remembering good events. Yes. it is not always possible to notice it. It doesn't always happen. But from this these events become more valuable. I stopped paying attention to it myself a long time ago. Many people will hurt you when you open up to them. Share kindness. But this is not a reason to become angry and closed. I used to be a kind, open, positive and fun guy. Many people hurt my soul. I closed myself off from people. For several years already. But I feel like it's not me.

I used to feel the same way just a few years back, but I think what changed for me is that I realized at the cusp of 13 that there was still so much I wanted to do. Before, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life, but I then found a passion for art, and things started to feel less aimless after that. Now, I'm not saying that figuring out what goals you want to set for yourself will fix everything. Heck, I can get into a pretty existential mindset sometimes, myself. There's probably always gonna be a lingering fear one has when it comes to getting older, I sure still feel that way. But I feel that way to an extent. I'm a very nostalgic person, which is funny because I'm still relatively young. What I'm trying to say is, remind yourself that your nostalgia can very much be working as rose-tinted glasses. Maybe it's just because my life hasn't been the brightest in hindsight, but I've found that a lot of what I feel nostalgic towards, looks worse with the glasses taken off. I'm grateful for the life I've lived so far because it's made me who I am, and I'm happy with myself. But I've been treated less than stellar be some people, and since I've figured that out, I realized that I couldn't wait for the future. Instead of it still being this confusing inevitability, it turned into something that could be better than what I already got. Change is still a scary thing for almost everyone, really, but all change really means is that things are gonna get shook up. Whether good or bad, a little or a lot, we don't know, it's unpredictable. It's scary. But I myself find that I'm mostly excited for the future. Sure, change is still something that can be anxiety inducing for me, but the hope I feel for the future is something that overshadows the uncertainty. Man, this got... a little out of hand. But I just wanted to be truly honest and get my feelings out there. Because that's what Alec does, his songs and just this music video for example are so genuine about something so universal, that of course people are gonna relate! I find that music is one of the best ways to relate to people, but it also comes down to the song as well, not just the listeners. When was the last time you listened to a major pop song about love and truly, deeply resonated with it? Since you're here, you probably haven't, (this is not to rag on generic pop music, I tend to have a soft spot for almost all music, and that type of it has its place) music tends to resonate with others on a deeper level when the writer is or has felt what they're writing about themselves. Not to say that all pop songs about love are automatically disingenuous, but they tend to feel so surface level that they could come off that way. Anyway, even my little metaphor at the end got out of hand! What I'm trying to say, is that honesty about ones own struggles can help someone with a similar situation. I don't know if anything I said back there made any sense in the first place, but I wanted to reach out because in that way, I may be able touch someone and remind them they're not alone! The last things that Alec said in the video about how it's never too late to be a kid, and age should be judged by experience, and not time, really struck a chord with me. Especially the bit about how many friends you've made, because I'm a pretty lonely person, I can only think of one true friend that I have, even. But hey, it just reminds me that I have a lot ahead of me, and I'm honestly very excited. Hope y'all enjoy my ramble that went on for just a taaaaaad too long! 💖💖💖

I turn 19 in four days and it hits so hard it had me crying my eyes out. I miss my school so much and I really don't want to get older, I wish I could stay a child forever. This video is so beautiful I love how you shared your childhood memories it's so precious. Thank you so much for putting our thoughts into words and giving us something to listen to when we can't make sense of the world.

I listened to this "older" by Alec Benjamin 2 months ago. And just now while scrolling through google discovery (which i unusually do) i saw An MV is released (with a message in it).. I wasnt even about to open it lol, but my mind is telling me "you got to open this. maybe you'll find something" .Im turning 18 in 4 days. I count the days as if its time running out: 7, 6, 5, 4.. Im anxious. Coz im jumping from the adolescent stage to almost adult stage, and i dont want that. I want to stay a kid. I want to act a kid. Whenever im scared, i just prayed. I feel somehow calmed.

@@cutieoui7772 yeah the turning 18 period is really weird and messy. I’m 22 and it feels so weird I know even know where the years have gone. I feel like I’m still 19/20. And I still feel lost and like how you feel at 17 and not wanting to be an adult and the fear of growing up.

I am 24 and its been 3 yrs now since i shifted from my hometown. This song brought tears to my eyes, every word of this song is relatable how fast time is moving there is so much stuff going on in our lives and we are not able to cop up. It is even more difficult when we move out of town where we spent our childhood, making a small circle of friends but we don't have them now there are only memories and hope of meeting them once or twice a year. It really sucks to grow up.

I’m taking on a lot this year to help me when I get *older* even though I’m not ready yet. It’s pretty stressful already and I feel this constant pressure, but I know this song will be one of those that helps me get through it :) if any upperclassman are reading I would really appreciate any tips ❤

Im a sophomore in HS, and I know what you're going through to some extent. My number 1 piece of advice- Trust your friends. If you're close to someone, letting them help you isn't a burden. You don't have to be alone- and that lesson carries into sophomore year as well. Let people see all of you and don't mask your emotions, or itll crack.

Hi, Im currently a freshman in college and I myself am not even sure on what to completely do with my life although I have an idea - I want to work with animals . But just because you don’t know what will come for the future or what you want to do when you get older that’s perfectly fine . Nobody should expect an young individual like ourselves to know what we are doing since we are still very young . I would say enjoy your time in highschool the best you can and make the most out of it . Take some risk , if you do plan to go to college do those extra classes they will really save you on the long run . Meet more people , make new friends if you’d like , but most importantly don’t forget about taking care of yourself . We tend to forget about taking care of ourselves and only worry about school work . Have days where you take care of yourself and only yourself , whether that’s just eating for yourself, doing some skin care , sleeping , doing your hair , or watching movies . Have a day for yourself . Make sure to prioritize yourself too . I dont know if this advice will help but I just wanted to put my output out there and give you advice I think would help . If you have any worries feel free to ask ! And I really hope your doing better and there’s less stress on you .

hey Alec, i just want to say, thank you for your incredible music. this song just made my day a little bit better. i'm in my early 20s right now, i had been depressed for years and everything around me just rapidly turn upside down, it was overwhelmingly exhausted. but things get a little bit easier and more manageable when i have my support, my Lucky Charm (my dog) . he had been with me whenever i was depressed and felt out of place in this world. he had been always be there for me, but not right now. he passed away on January 6 when you released a demo of this song, every night i would hug my dog and listen to the demo, remember about the precious memories of ours when we were just a kid and a pup (At that time, I wasn't ready to become an adult yet and take on my own responsibilities, I just wanted to go back to the days of being a child with a carefree mind, i didn't ready to get older). in January 2021, he was old and severely sick. i knew for sure that he would die and leave me one day soon. that day came and he passed away in the veterinary bed within the arms of mine, he had lived with me for 15 years when he left me, i had nothing to lean on, had nothing to push me through the day. things got worse and worse, i broke up with my boyfriend in a 2 year relationship, My studies at the university were dropped drastically, and i stopped listening to your song because i just kept missing him around me. but yesterday, you released this track officially, i was quite curious and hyped . When I listened to it , the first thing I did was recalling about the memories of me and Lucky Charm, however the difference here is that Lucky Charm is not with me. i cried so much last night with a new tune, as well as the new beat . It's like a sign to me that, I have to work hard for myself and my future to survive, I can't go on crying and mourning him like the past 6 months. I have to be for myself and stand up on my own two feet. again, thanks for the great songs, i love the narrated for you , these two windows album and the little demos on your channel too. much love from Viet Nam, hope you see my comment p/s: if possible, can you repost the demo, even if it's just a demo, it means a lot to me

I'm 25 and this song still gets me crying. It perfectly captures that feeling, moving forward before you're ready and looking ahead to an uncertain future. I'm in school pursuing a degree, and I don't know what will happen when I graduate, or ten years down the line, or twenty. I'm excited and terrified all at once.

alec, this is so pure. every song you write has a way of touching my soul deeply. i'm a college sophomore feeling slightly overwhelmed with how fast time is moving and how i'll have to get a real job and be a full-on adult soon. thank you for reminding me that, in some ways, i can always be a kid:) also this video was beautifully shot and lit!

This is beautiful. You can always say you don't remember being a kid but then when you're sat down and asked about it, there are so many small specific things that you used to do that define you as your own person.
