He's enlightened. He essentializes both the best and worst aspects of humanity. Even his Nen ability reflects this multiple times: A goddess of mercy used as an instrument of death; Hand Zero embraces a person with unconditional love and compassion, yet blasts them with the power of a sun. And even that is oversimplifying--like Guanyin, he's a man of 1,000 faces and 1,000 hands. No one is truly simple. It's precisely that duality that makes us human, and it's exactly why his fight with Meruem is so thematically resonant. The /fight itself/ is the conversation Meruem wasn't willing to have. There was no way to show him what humanity truly meant otherwise--what it was and what it could be in its best and worst. And for every assumption Meruem has, it's soon broken, and he's addressed (in a rather cliched kung-fu master manner) as an "ant." Fittingly, after showing the most exceptional, positive aspects, it's precisely the most cruel aspects of humanity that end up "winning" the fight. This goes over Meruem's head at the time, but it sows the seeds for later. It's precisely that arrogance in your power that leads you to commit atrocious things So as counter-intuitive as it seems, it's then fitting that as powerful as he is, his nen takes the form of the goddess of compassion/mercy. Strength/power is used to save people--and in the end I argue that it saves Meruem, even the worst of it. "Good" or "bad"/"light" or "dark" oversimplifies things at this point. He's human, nothing more or less.

Netero's ultimate goal is to push humanity, and when he finds someone who isn't willing to advance the human boundaries, to fight with all its soul... Netero doesn't care if the other person dies. It can be seen in his influence from beyond the grave, He forces humainity and the hunter association to the new continent. Evolve or perish. The ones who can't keep up will die, that's the price of the unlimited potential Netero talks about
@rexyeye30495 жыл бұрын
@@hiperbird I think that's why he was scared that he would be persuaded and won over. It's because Meruem was the ultimate challenge for humanity he would push many of them beyond their limit and root out the weak that Netero looked down upon so much and having him carry out his plan would bring out the potential that Netero saw in humanity to its fullest extent.

The royal guards' names are all combinations of Egyptian deities and characters from a french children's story called "Caroline et ses Amis". Neferpitou is Nefertem, being one of the first to arise from the primal waters, very much like Pitou was the first of the Royal Guards to be born. Shaiapouf is Shai, being the deification of fate, maybe speaking to his manipulative nature? His Nen being manipulation, and he desires for nothing other than for the king to fulfill his potential; his fate so to speak. Menthuthuyoupi is Menthu (more commonly known as Montu), being a god of war, speaking to Youpi's absolute rage. Pitou, Pouf and Youpi being the names of the characters from the french stories.

For me Netero's use of the bomb.wasn't an act of altruism. Tho he did that for human race as well, the most important part there for him was that he won't let Neruem live because he was too proud for that. He is an ultimate hunter and he can't let his prey get away from him. He'll do everything needed, but he'll achieve his goal, he will finish the hunt. In the end he was like "Bravo Meruem, you are stronger than me, I admit that, but you are not surviving the battle with me. From the moment we became opponents, you were fated to die"

Not just any bodhisattva, it's Guan Yin in her thousand arms form. If you ever read the old tales, it talks how she vows to liberate "all beings" from their own karmic woes and/or the cycle of rebirth. That's how she got those 10000 arms and eyes. How much perseverance do you need to have in order to liberate "all beings" from their own karmic cycle? To me, bodhisattva Guan yin symbolizes unlimited perseverance to achieve great thing. A human without significant talent like Netero can achieve great thing.

I always knew that I loved Netero as a character, but I never quite realized just how complex he was thematically to the overall story of Hunter x Hunter. If you're looking for the next topic, might I suggest Leorio or Kurapika? Maybe there isn't enough there to target Leorio, but he stands out to me as a rare exception to the "non-fighter characters are typically irrelevant to a fighting series" notion. As for Kurapika, I've been especially interested in his arc after his first bout with the Phantom Troupe, because while his actions/the fallout of that arc are very atypical for a "vengeance-seeking" anime character, he hasn't completely forgone his quest to kill the Phantom Troupe. I always compare him to Sasuke Uchiha in that regard, as, while both are in many ways the same, their ideals are vastly different.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
Kurapika is a fantastic idea and I'm really looking forward to covering him, but I'll be waiting a while before I do him. Leorio is a great idea and definitely worth a video.. I might tackle him sooner than Kurapika.

It's interesting, I recently pondered the nature of HxH's arc structure and storytelling techniques. The conclusion I came to takes roots in Togashi's "Yu Yu Hakusho". Originally, YYH was supposed to be episodic until Togashi's editor saw that no one liked that structure leading to the more linear story we got. My guess is that he decided to tackle the episodic idea in a very original way that took advantage of the unique existence of arcs in anime and manga. Personally, I found this very inspiring, it shows that no matter how long a genre or medium exists, you can always find new ways to write your stories.

The irony of what Netero did in the end with the Miniature Rose is what I find actually fascinating about him. He poured his heart and soul to completely master what his body, mind and soul can do and beyond, yet he would at the end resort on something he even didn't create. That moment when Meruem was ended not because of Netero's strength alone, but his resolve. In the end, Netero decided to show what he is capable of, but he resorted on representing on what humanity, the thing he represents, can do as a collective. I really liked how you analyze and explore ideas about characters and situations in a very balanced fashion. You're not too flamboyant with your words just to show you know more than anyone, nor you're not pointing obvious thoughts that spoonfeed ideas. You do deserve a Patreon, too bad I'm poor to even contribute. But thank you for inspiring me to find the kind of videos I really want to make in the near future. Keep it up.

i find this character to be so facinating... his whole paradoxical representation of the imperfect perfection of humanity is really something so well executed that i find it hard to believe that someone was actually able to write such a complex character on purpose... but that just proves how much of a master togashi is... little things i just noticed watching your video... based on what we know of netero seeing how he only gave one chance to leorio on the hunter exam tournament because he might of deemed him weak compared to the others.. and then leorio almost becoming the next chairman after him... seems like to perfect to be coincidence... another is the 10000 daily punches is symbolism to the 10000 hr rule to basically mastering anything...

When I finished watching the Chimera arc and seeing his own perspective to the ant king, I could see that Netero was a very power-hungry type of individual - I had wondered why was it Netero didn't want to try to be friendly to the Ant King, but he kept being playful but at the same time, condescending, showing his pride, self-confidence and ego taking higher priority in his thinking. He felt his way and decisions were for the best for him in the name of humanity, but above all, to test himself against stronger opponents, similar logic in character likely can reflect to Goku from DBZ where they'll do things that may not be in everyones' interest but it'll be based on pride or a selfish desire. Netero projected that the Ant King, even if he was wise, even if strong, even if merciful, should never be King and he perceived the scenario that the Ant King would face constant rebellion against humans that would never accept being ruled by something Non-Human, so he dared not give the Ant King even a chance to rule. That, and he understood the parallels of people that remind him of himself. The Ant King presented himself as a strong thinker and one who is rationalizing as a sentient creature - but he knew that one day the darker side of the Ant King would likely take over and become what causes the most problems. As Gon is the descent into losing his humanity, and the Ant King is the ascent to gaining humanity. Netero continued seeing that the 'Inner-animal' would be what comes out when the Ant King decides that he's tired of humans not accepting his rule, that his rational and 'Humanity' would be lost. Likewise, Netero himself understands what it means to rule and have a darker side and fights with the intent to kill, that he understands humanity is dualistic and full of unlimited potential that should not be subjected to being ruled by a being that likely would hamper that growth. With that in mind, as complex as Netero was, deep down he was a narcissistic old man who hated seeing anyone stronger than him who didn't sacrifice as much as he did to gain the power he had - as the Ant King theorized, to gain the powers that Netero had, he must've trained to the point of insanity to gain his power, what would you think of that kind of man, who then sees the Ant King who simply was 'born' with greatness? It greatly frustrates Netero, Netero just wants to no doubt put him in his place, but does so 'in the name of humanity' but also subtly, because it'd make him feel better. That's what I saw in Netero, he was a playful old man, and while it isn't fake, it was to hide that inner-bloodlust and thrill of fighting, winning, being the best. Time catches up to everyone and he'd be one who refuses to let old age stop him from feeling like he's on top.
@flightevolution81323 жыл бұрын
This is a really, really flawed understanding of Netero and his character traits. You also contradict yourself multiple times, but the most egregious flaw is when you simplify him down to his narcissism.
@gerardo.b30263 жыл бұрын
I mean netero came in with an objective and even stated in the show that he cannot aim for peace with the king because he knows it’s not what he came to do. You just completely disregard the fact that they were fighting for humanity’s freedom

Not only that but his character represents the peak martial artist. He reached enlightenment by having a balance between good and evil and used both against the Ant King.

Great video. But as for the fight, I personally think that Netero was using one arm and one leg in order to challenge himself, not to train the boys. We saw in the Chimera Ant arc that he was searching for a long time for a worthy opponent. He just wanted to be challenged in some way, so he put limits on himself.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
That's pretty similar to what I said, isn't it? While there may have been a slight inclination to help them, he limited himself because he loved winning and loved the challenge. I think I said something to that effect.
@Jitszu7 жыл бұрын
Actually, you did. I missed when you said that you "initially" thought it was to help them. Oops! My mistake. But a question for you that I'd like to hear your opinion on. You said that he was enjoying his victories against Gon and utterly destroying him, basically. What was your basis for that? I feel like, if anything, his actions against Meruem directly contradict that. He was basically issuing out a free beatdown, but instead of just continuing he baited Meruem into fighting back because he wants a true victory. I don't think Netero's the kind of dude who would get pleasure by whomping on a child that can't even use nen, even if he was only using one leg and one arm.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
Jitszu You put it a bit harshly there. I'm not saying that Netero gets pleasure by whomping on a weak child. I just think that Netero enjoys winning, regardless of context. That aspect of him feeds into his pride in humanity's endurance and his bully-like tendencies. But above all, he loves opponents who are powerful and represent his passion for the craft of martial arts. And he respects it. In the end, I think that trumps everything and explains why he acted that way to Meruem. It's all about the duality for me.

I see Netero as a representation of human nature in Hunter x Hunter. Its beauty and its malice. It’s love and it’s cruelty. It’s capacity for selfish and ruthless actions for it own survival. As well as it’s appreciation for love. Netero in a way is as Aleczandxr said is a microcosm of the story’s thematic development. While he does some questionable actions like letting a psychopath like Hisoka continue to participate in the Hunter Exam, having Killiua face his evil brother and having the exam be a darwinist landscape in only whose with potential can survive. He definitely is not a noble man by any means, but he died for his people and is beloved by many characters in series including someone as vile as Pariston. It’s just that the people he is fighting for are the apart of a species that build unjust hierarchy, commit genocide and create weapons of mass destruction like the Poor Man’s Rose. In the incredible fight with Meruem, his dedication and passion for the martial arts is why Meruem has so much respect, being as important to Meruem’s transformation into a being with empathy towards others as his love for Komungi. Netero’s shocked expression upon seeing the Ant King carrying the injured blind girl show passion for someone he was oppress was proof that Netero was not a monster just a who in heinous actions Humanity created. Hunter x Hunter to me is (to quote George R.R. Martin) a story about the human heart in conflict with itself. Both Netero and Meruem are excellent characters grapple with their evil and their empathy and both two the many characters who this series so brilliant.

The first thing that came to mind when you mentioned Meruem’s enlightenment was the resemblance between Netero and a shepherd-like bodhisattva (one who aspires to delay buddhahood until all other sentient beings achieve buddhahood.) We can picture Meruem as a sentient being who achieves buddhahood after the fight against Netero. And Netero can be seen as a shepherd-like bodhisattva, this is due to the fact that all his life Netero has been waiting for someone worthy enough to fight against (he delays his death until achieving this goal of his). And after fighting against that person Netero finally fulfills his role as a shepherd by helping Meruem achieving buddhahood and therefore rises into the heavens as a sentient being. Later on Meruem joins him after achieving full buddhahood thanks to Netero. I think I read somewhere that people who achieve buddhahood become sentient beings that don’t go through rebirth and also that they rise into the heavens as they achieve buddhahood. I may be wrong though, correct me if I am.

Love your work! I would argue that Netero's nature is kind at its core but the world and all he has endured taught him that weakness has a price humans must pay. Also I would love a look at the relationship between Hisoka and Ilumi. They are, if I may uses a DND reference, an interesting look on the relationship between chaotic evil and lawful evil
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't necessarily disagree; I never really stated what I think his core is, I don't think. While he is all about the dichotomy, I do think his core would be more based in love and gratitude than the darkness, as established through the symbolism associated with him.

This was your best video by far, next to your Meruem video (which was touching as hell). What I really love about your videos is that you dont only touch the subject you mentioned in your title. You completely engulf in it, you search for the deepest meanings and find many other things in the show/game/character along the way, without swaying to much from the subject. This video struck me so hard when you started talking about the black-rose and how mass destrucion weapons can be mankinds doom and saviour at the same time. Great job, I really F*CKING enjoyed your video!!! I hope you're having fun making them. I wrote once a comment where I said that we'll enjoy your videos as long as you enjoy the things you talk about, Im sure thats the case here. Again thanks! Keep it up!

Thanks so much mate. I'm not saying that I work myself to death doing these videos, but it's extremely pleasing to see that the work and passion that goes into some of the analyses shines through. And while I do spend a lot of time doing them, above all it's tons of fun. It's all totally worth it and not a single topic I cover is one that I'm not invested in. Each one has a different style, with the character analyses tending to go a bit deeper than relatively more general reviews. Obviously not every video will be as emotional as the Meruem one or as symbolically-anchored as this one (in fact, some of the next videos will be broader, analytical reviews of anime that I haven't covered yet and really enjoyed), but rest assured that each topic is one that I really enjoy and want to get my opinion out about.

Oh man that was lovely. I've always had the sneaking suspicion that Netero was my favourite character, but could never seem to find many convincing reasons why other than "Meruem Fight" repeated sixteen times. This solves that problem and much more! That said, though... _Meruem Fight_. Holy shit I remember watching that thing over so many times trying to pick apart all of the tangled philosophical implications and mixed emotions. The problem was, there was just _so much_ being said in so little time that it meshed into the feeling of the arc absolutely beautifully, but still left me not knowing what to think or feel. With all the context you offer in this video, it's a lot easier to digest. I think you really put a finger on the crux of the issue when you mentioned Netero becoming antlike and Meruem becoming human. You have Netero, a character who superficially represents the pinnacle of human physical and spiritual attainment (at least, that's how I perceived him during the battle), pitted against a foe who, in turn, superficially represents the antithesis of humanity. Throughout the action of the fight, Netero only seems more and more saintly, until the final moments when- _Surprise!_ -he does a heel-face-turn and channels the most appalling aspects of humanity to achieve victory. It was a truly magnificent way to inflate the viewer's sense of morality before knocking them flat on their backs, where they would then be primed to swallow the whole great bittersweet, ambiguous pill of the arc's conclusion. As you said, Netero works so bloody well as a model for the whole arc.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
Haha, to be fair, "Meruem Fight" is all you need to say as justification for Netero being your favourite. It's cool that the video made some of the subtleties easier to digest though, because the fight is beautiful if you just let it play without trying to focus on the little details. Obviously, in retrospective reflection I think that a lot can be analyzed that contributes to the narrative, and that's what I tried to help with here. And I really have nothing to add to that description of the thematic resonance of the battle. The gradual shift into the opposing ideals was just so gorgeously done, I can't say enough good about it. The Chimera Ant arc is filled to the brim with so much meaning, but I personally believe that this human-to-ant, ant-to-human aspect is possibly the best thematic idea that Togashi gave us throughout.

@@daveldasilva2645 People also too often use the logic "opinions can be criticized" as a way to completely ignore opinions entirely and act like their opinion is above others. The simple fact is, HxH is very well written yes, but that doesn't mean everyone has to like it equally. That's simply unrealistic and one cannot hope that to be the case. Give one shit for their opinions all day long, it doesn't put you on a higher pedestal than someone else. Why? Because, you are different people and like different things in different ways. Sooner or later it becomes you forcing your opinions down someone's throat which is far worse than someone putting a series that while not as well written, higher than HxH. There is nothing to criticize here. Someone likes something more than your favorite series, so what? What is there to criticize? The fact that they don't hold the same admiration for HxH as you do? That's not something to criticize. Not everything needs criticism. This isn't some opinions of the Hitler or some crazy crap like that. It's literally entertainment media and art. I like HxH. But it isn't my Number 1 favorite series despite being one of the best written I've read/watched. Why? Because, being well written =/= being always better. A series can have godly writing, but can just be boring to watch. It becomes a matter of what you look for and what you care about. I like DBS more than HxH. Why? Because I enjoyed Super more than HxH. So obviously DBS would be higher on my list than HxH. You may not like it, but that's your opinion, not mine. At the end of the day, it depends on subjectivity as HxH maybe objectively better written, but subjectively one can put it below other franchises due to their tastes, standards and enjoyment. This is the exact train of thought that kept me away from HxH for so long. I kept getting this "it's the best series in the world" stuff shoved down my throat and at every turn someone would always bring it up as this masterpiece (which writing wise it is). This lead to me finally watching the series recently and really not seeing it as the golden god of anime/manga I heard it was. It's a good series. But, for me it's by no means the best piece of entertainment I have seen. This isn't a series I would continuously go back to and watch (outside of reactions from KZbinrs) because while I liked it, it isn't the most entertaining thing for me to go through. That's just the fact of the matter for me here. HxH is a good series, but it's not MY #1 series because it didn't appeal to me as it did with others. Simple as that. The same goes for others.

TBH, i'm sad its over because the show was so fun and intriguing. Now I gotta get into the manga. I was having a great time, a big problem I have with anime nowadays is I find myself falling asleep as I usually watch anime before I go to bed, but I can assure you there was never I moment where I nearly fell asleep while watching HxH, sure there were some heavy dialogue moments, but even then they never made me tired or bored. I was always so interested in what was happening I found it hard to stop myself from watching more episodes before going to bed. Also, while others think the Chimera Ant arc drags on for too long, which I can agree with albeit only slightly, I FUCKING LOVED IT. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN AN ARC IVE WATCHED THAT I WAS SO DAMN INTRIGUED AND INTERESTED IN. I loved how the guards were presented as if they'd just be one dimensional bad guys and then turning out to be extremely deep and well-realized characters. I loved how I thought Komugi would just be some useless person for the king to fall in love with to make us relate to the king and then how the show flipped that expectation on me. Hell, I feel without Komugi they may not have won. I love how the Chimera Ants like Meleoron and Welfin looked as if they'd just be pointless characters and then again FLIPPED IT ON MY HEAD, hell, when they started giving Welfin backstory I doubted I'd end up liking him but again, FLIPPED ON MY HEAD. This show does a great job with characters and I fucking love it! I got into HxH simply because I wanted to watch all the Top Rated Anime from MAL top-down just to see why these shows were so popular and I'm glad HxH was high up there because it deserves to be. The characters are astounding and the settings are amazing and thats what really defined the series for me, helps that the animation was stunning and the music was overall really good! Gon is so lovable but what really gets me about him, is that while hes presented as slow from time to time (That fucking math scene with Knuckle cracked me up) he actually thinks and learns through these battles. Killua making a friend and then becoming so strong he finally breaks free of his brother's hold over him by himself and having a friend he likes so much like Gon to inspire him was one of my favorite scenes from the show in itself other than Komugi and the King's final game. Kurapika being so determined and hellbent while also having an extremely sad backstory but still being an upbeat dude made me so happy. Leorio was also extremely helpful and while he may be the weakest, I can say without a doubt that he isnt worthless (Also thanks for knocking the fuck out of Gon's father). I don't want to destroy youtube's chat box so i'll end it there but I really had trouble finding a character I thought was a waste or just pointless, this show just did everything so well, its crazy! I had so much fun with this series that I just didnt want it to go, I wanted more silly and serious moments with Killua and Gon like with the Heavens Arena arc, I wanted more Kura, Leo, Gon, and Killua in a group just doing shit together because they were so playful and interesting.(hell, the only negative I can call out about HxH was how they dont get that much screen time after the chimera ant arc) I wanted more of the Phantom Troupe just being badasses, I wanted more Greed Island Shenanigans. I want MORE HxH, this is honestly the best show i've watched in a long time and I demand another adaptation with even more shenanigans!

I doubt many people would agree with me but I would really like to hear your overall opinion of Knov as a character. I know that I probably stand almost completely alone by saying that he is my favorite side character in HxH but I just loved the struggle he had and that despite getting completely broken by Poufs En due to being completely unshielded against Nen to avoid detection he was still able to face his trauma enough to come through to save the lives of Shoot and Morel who would most certainly have died otherwise. It always hurts me when I hear or read people talking about how "he got what he deserved" or something along those lines when he completely broke down because he was so harsh on Killua in their first meeting. We never saw him apologize to Gon and Killua directly but through his inner monologue we saw him greatly appreciate and admire their mental fortitude at which point I thought apologies to be completely unnecessary because it probably didn't even bother Killua that much so why should it bother us. He also acknowledged Gon before Morel and was one of the most worried about how Gon will respond to Kites fate at the hands of Pitou - proven by him monitoring the boys days before they confronted them about Kite to get a grasp of their mental health. The only thing that makes me even more angry than hearing people say that he got what he deserved is people making fun of him because of his mental breakdown. When I saw some people laughing when Knov made his entrance to save Morel. When he asked if Knuckle wanted to come with him because their mission was finished and Knuckle denied and he only said: "You're strong" to him with an empty and broken gaze I literally burst out: "No, you're strong!" to my screen. It's hard to keep on fighting despite all odds but coming back after getting psychologically crippled once only to save your comrades takes another form of strength that most people sadly don't know to appreciate... Even though I already wrote way more than I actually wanted to it was all to express my fondness of his character. I would just love it if you would make a character analysis about him. It probably wouldn't be as long as Neteros or Hisokas so maybe it will even be a little less work for you but I really want to hear your thoughts on the guy sometime in the future. :)

I hope I'm not getting alzheimer or something. Well I suppose that means I can at least watch it again for the first time. Sorry about that but thanks for the extremely quick response and for reading my thoughts about him anyway. ^^

This video was awesome just like other vids of yours! I love the way you passionately and intelligently analyse anime/manga in a way that allows other passionate and intelligent fans to see what deep understanding and emotional experiences might have been missed! Pure Genius!

I just finished hxh, and this video is a real treat to me. God, I can never get over how good it was... and your video gave me a big push to watch it, so really thanks. I'd love to see other characters, or maybe other anime you like.

Great to hear! Glad my video gave you a push. Future videos will definitely cover other HxH characters and arcs, and other anime I enjoy, so don't worry about that! :)

You could always make a vid about Killua, he changed a lot throughout the show. Or even Gon

Yeah, I'm planning on doing both of them for sure. I think I want to wait a bit before tackling them though, maybe something for the summer.

Great analysis yet again . And I feel you man, always lost for words when recommending HXH to someone cause u can't really sum it up in one word . The settings can be so abstract where the ultimate goal of a character doesn't amount to much. Also it would be interesting to know why his son wanted him dead About D.C. , I think he loves combat but all that place seemed to offer him was a struggle for survival where you aren't really fighting strong opponents but raw strength and nature itself , trying to get out of harms way. Not exactly thrilling and fun like a fight would be .

Kit Killua pretty much (also I joking say "everything" XD)

Thanks pal. I agree on Netero in DC - I didn't talk about it too extensively but just like you, I think he missed the thrill of battles and fights. Perhaps it was here that he realized that while he loves a challenge, his love and gratitude pertains to specifics things. And I'm sure the Dark Continent was anything but enjoyable for a man like him.
