Miura has given interviews talking about how the ghost of Casca’s miscarried fetus had a kinship with Griffith when he was taken out of the tower- the physical issues/disabilities, tortured personality and “monstrousness”, and core protectiveness of Guts and Casca. He’d been writing Griffith and that child as being symbolically and emotionally linked for a long time, both as the moonlight boy and the baby ghost. So what Griffith feels are both the child's emotions AND his own. Griffith can NOT run or hide from his humanity, no matter how much he tries to rise completely above it. That's his whole character arc in a nutshell. I view Moonlight Boy as a persona of Griffith's, one of his fractured personalities manifests by way of causality (in which demon baby is the vassal that reincarnates him). Griffith in Golden Age had three distinct sides to him. The valiant commander, the dark prince, and the child. Now these sides to him have their own forms. His "Griffith" persona, his "Femto" persona, and his child persona as represented by the Moonlight Boy.

You may be onto something... the moonlight child could be Griffith's "inner-child", so to speak. The innocence he's tried ,and is still trying to repress. The last remnant of Griffith's attachment to Guts and Casca, who he still sees as extensions of himself; people who he cared about, as long as they stayed in his shadow. That's his own twisted way of forming attachments. At the same time, anything resembling emotions or attachments is a flaw in his eyes. A weakness he wants to eliminate in order to keep moving forward. Even though ,technically, he's achieved his dream already. All he has now is a megolamanical need to keep rising in power. He'll never have enough, no matter how much he gains.

@@easschung9442 I mean he is evil, and selfish to an extreme. Even if something is "understandable" it need not be "justifiable." He was always a sociopath who was walking the road directly to hell. He is the opposite of the archetype of Jesus. Instead of sacrificing himself for a greater good, he sacrificed others for his ambition and desire. That is a major tenant of evil in every situation. We sympathize with Griffith to a certain degree bc he suffered, but one's suffering does not justify them in committing atrocities in any sense. I could see Griffith still having a part of himself that cares for Guts and Casca (I love the theory that it's at least partly due to the incomplete ritual), but has lost the ability to properly understand/process what that care means to him. It could end up that Griffith concludes that the lingering humanity he has is a glitch caused by the incomplete ritual and realizes that he's not full a god yet, leading him to double down and try and finish Guts and Casca himself.

I believe that the point you made about how Griffith's caring makes his actions more evil is an important one. I think it emphasizes the distinction between Griffith being fully "god" or just a human acting like one. If he were a god, I feel like it would be almost instinctual for him to continue to grow his nation, but if he were human, there would be a choice in the matter. If Griffith has no other choice but to continue down this path, is he truly evil? Just as how Ares isn't "evil" for starting wars since that is just his "nature". If we know that he cares, which is essentially a human trait, it emphasizes how he still contains some humanity which means he has a choice in his actions yet continues down this evil path. This may have just been the point you were making, but I think it was an important one.

Ever since I read the encounter in the hill of swords for the first time I never believed it when Griffith said he feels nothing. I think he just can't accept on a subconscious level that he still feels something for Guts, that even after becoming a god, sacrificing everything for his dream, and arguably even achieving it, that Guts still has that hold over him. I also haven't read any fan theories but I think the Moonlight Boy is just his subconscious acting out, because despite achieving his dream, deep down he can't accept that it doesn't satisfy him, the only time he ever felt truly happy was with Guts. Just to clarify I don't mean that in a romantic way, though I can't deny that possibility exists, I don't think it's true and it's another can of worms.

The way I see it, Griffith retaining some humanity is a direct result of two people living when they probably shouldn’t have. Either it’s because two sacrifices weren’t sacrificed and this means he’s still got some attachment to them, or it’s because of the moonlight child situation, or a combination of both. The latter is very much a kindness gone wrong, given that the egg apostle was being “kind” to the child, the former would be very on point for the series because the two people who meant something Griffith are the remains of his humanity. I just hope there’s a way to spare the moonlight child.

Beautiful video! One of my favourite parts of Griffith is just being able to wonder at where he begins and Femto ends. I've never experienced being able to apply so many different mindsets to a single character. Maybe something similar would've applied to the other Godhand members too. Also how masterful is it that we actually got an amazing pay-off to the demon child's identity, a character introduced all the way back in 1989???? Really good analysis. I share your views. This has always been the best and most interesting aspect of Griffith's character as well as the essence of his tragedy. He's incredibly nuanced. He cared before and still does. He cannot escape it no matter how hard he's tried. He wanted to destroy the best there was in him for it was hurting too much, wanted so bad to stop caring and came to despise his friend for making him care, believed attachment held him back. But it was always going to come back in some way and I think the way it was done was beautiful. It does not mean it suddenly makes him "good" or erases what he's done and that's what makes it so painful. It adds to his complexity and the central dynamic of Berserk.

Being a God hand shouldn’t allow this. But didn’t (what’s her name) didn’t she cry when she saw all the range of human emotions at once “Hate, rage, anger, love, desire, lust, pain” etc. didn’t it move her to tears?

Good video, that nostalgic warmth comment does add food for thought. My take on Griffith is that he was always torn between his facade (the person he wanted other people to see) and his real persona, subconsciously so. His facade made him think that Guts, by sheer virtue of being in the Band of the Hawk, was not his equal or friend, but he came to be confronted with the harsh reality once Guts left, tearing Griffith's worldview apart. I do not have an answer on whether or not that part of him has carried over to Femto, seeing the final image of 364 leaked without translation I was sure that it did carry over, but after reading it, I'm not so sure anymore. I think he does still feel for Guts and Casca, but whether or not it's due to the Moonlight Child or not, I seriously cannot answer. I want to believe that Griffith still does, but I just do not know.

I am glad you got around to talking about Berserk again. I think it makes for a better villian if Griffith still retains vestiges of humanity within him. He cannot be redeemed or forgiven but he can perhaps come to feel regret for what he did and realize that his dream won't leave him fullfilled and those new "Band of the Hawk" that worship him won't replace the original ones that added their dreams to his.

One thing I enjoy about antagonists such as Griffith and Junko Enoshima is how their capacity to love and care for those close to them is used to emphasize just how evil they are when those loved ones are hurt by them in horrific ways, instead of the narrative using that one positive character trait as a means to either redeem them or, at least, claim there is good in them.

It would make sense for Griffith to have remnants of feelings/emotions given the fact that despite sacrificing everyone from the band of the hawk, he still refused to kill the 2 people he cared for the most. Guts and Casca. Even tho the rules for becoming a god hand are clear. Maybe him only sacrificing the band and not guts/casca made his transformation into Themto incomplete in terms of completely removing his feelings/emotions since he couldn’t bring himself to kill them despite the animosity he had towards guts at the time. He may have wanted to hurt Guts, but he clearly didn’t want to kill him. Otherwise he would have as Themto.

Thanks, I really appreciate your analysis and interpretation of Griffith. I truly don't know anymore what to make of Griffith and his themes. On the one hand, he is a great character with appealing dichotomy, on the other hand I feel that there might be no way to make a fitting ending or continuation of the story (not that it's too likely we get one now after Miuras death). I mean an ending that is not too normal or expectable. Maybe there should be an even stranger new revelation or element to the world/ characters or the plot to truly catch me off guard so that I could percieve it as fitting. It's this special sort of larger than life story, which could really benefit from such strange revelations or twists. Something unprecedented.

i dont think griffith had feelings to begin with since 1 owned guts and told him so. everything he did was to his own goal of obtaining a "kingdom" like said just soaring higher and higher like a hawk. man blamed guts for everything dispite him getting captured for treason from his own actions. griffith is still the same griffith he just dint know if he had feelings to begin with and is figuring it out now he is shallow only with a goal in mind. would actually love to see a ending where griffith gets his way he gets everything in this world and there is no place to soar higher a hawk hitting a solid roof. i think this would be the only way to break him. only then will he realise what he has done and actually gave up everything that was so simple yet pure.

I would say that you aren't far from the truth. Miura mentionned before that the key to it all was "Void". With that in mind, what do Void and Femto have in common? Both are Godhand, and as far as we know, both have sacrifices still alive. We saw with the count in Black Swordman arc that a failure to sacrifice can lead to human emotions and attachements even, the same can be said of Rosine and Jill. Now Gaseric is dead, but his soul is bound to his armor, so I don't know if he counts as a sacrifice, but in the case of Griffith, Guts and Caska. If he was meant to sacrifice "those he cared the most for", failed to fully do so, and became the "Angel of Longing, Femto", I wouldn't be surprised that it is simply that Griffith's attachements to Guts and Caska are the ones resurfacing, and the Moonlight Boy, is simply a conduit for it all, since "every child longs for their parents", as the Skull Knight said. I'm also spitballing here, but I'm positive Miura already gave us every single clue we need to figure this all out

Guts is a glitch in the matrix basically. He defies causality with his survivability. He should have died a long time ago but he didn't. He obstructed fate and now defies it. As we all know a glitch can cause major problems and ruin the program from it's core. Same with Guts. He is breaking Griffitth, the man made a god by making him feel. Otherwise impossible cuz Guts wasn't suppouse to live til then yet he did. Like Gambino said he should have died on that tree but he didn't.

Griffith has been quite clear that nothing will keep him from his dream. I’m imagining a scenario where this puts him at odds with the God Hand themselves. Perhaps, through some unexpected twist of causality, Griffith makes the choice, perhaps through the death of the moonlight boy triggering another Behelit, to offer up the God Hand, now his kin, as the ultimate sacrifice….perhaps to regain his humanity or maybe even to ascend to an even higher plane. Based on what we know of how the Idea of Evil works…perhaps Griffith was always intended to be a sort of corrupting influence within the God Hand that was destined to herald its demise. Through his dream and the hope it has given humanity, it could cause a ripple in the collective unconscious which ultimately transforms the Idea of Evil into something more benevolent and drags humanity out of its dark age. We know that the God Hand was considered “complete” with the ascension of Femto, perhaps the only thing left is for their inevitable downfall to play out. We know that they are not omniscient and are just as subject to the flow of causality despite being more keenly aware of it. Perhaps Void was even aware from the beginning that they represent a temporary explanation for humanities woes before they advance into an age of logic and reason similar to the one we inhabit.

I also haven’t read anything either, the rape of casca at least to me shows that Griffith has emotions. The blank man with no feelings just a need to complete his dream doesn’t make sense in the context of raping his sacrifice. Griffith hates his emotions cause they caused his downfall so his ideal self ‘fento’ can perfectly suppress his emotions. When the moonlight child takes over Griffith has no control of the situation and has no control of his emotions. At least that’s what i think.

I like to believe Griffith still has feelings just because of his own quote that "nothing has changed" and that he didn't really lose them he just buried them and at the end when he's accomplished everything he feels he feels it all and at seeing that now Guts is so far removed from his life that Griffith isn't even relavent to Guts life anymore and him seeing that through the child makes it all come out as he cries in the final chapter. Griffith is defeated in the end because Guts moved on

I always had an idea of how things could end, but I had a few doubts till the last chapter. I once remember someone talking about the final battle of Guts and Griffith would end with them some how cutting the world spiral tree. And that would cut the worlds ties with the astral world and the god hand. Would also be symbolic of Guts cutting ties with Griffith. Although I imagined Griffith being forced to leave the human world and maybe at a last act of compassion leaving his human body to the moonlight child. Afterwards maybe skull knight fights guts for the child who he probably thinks still holds ties with the god hand. Then Gut’s would end the series going blind and struggling do a lot of things, but having Casca and all his friends around him to help this time in his final years. I also personality believe Femto’s body is actually 3 beings. I don’t believe Femto could have come back without a physical body and before the moonlight boy was a dead fetus wandering through the interstice. I think the egg of the perfect world devoured the baby that was brought into the tower of conviction by that mother. That could have produced his physical body and being a baby would probably be out over taken by Griffith and the Moonlight child. Although just my dumb theories.

Have you ever considered doing a character analysis on Farnese? I feel as though the majority of characters in Berserk have undergone extreme character changes throughout the entirety of the story, Miura was really good at writing these transitions and making them feel natural… and so similarly to Griffith and Femto to a center extent Farnese has changed drastically from when we first met her because of Guts presence in her life.
