I think the white hair part is more a reflection of how Guts is becoming more and more like Grifith. More than likely not, but will his comrades sacrifice themselves for him? One thing is true, this story will not have a happy ending.

Also, Guts said earlier in the manga that he would kill the Count with his own fleshy body so if he still thinks like this he won´t use the behelit

There was also Griffith's dream before the eclipse. Everybody just handwaves it as 'just a dream', but in a story like this one nothing is wasted. Nothing is intended to be meaningless. A parallel between Guts and Griffith in the manga is that both men have suffered greatly in their lives, and reached their absolute lowest at some point, where they were given the decision to retain their humanity, or end their suffering by discarding their humanity. Grifith obviously picked the discarding route, while Guts retains his humanity, but is (where I'm at) always on the edge of holding onto his humanity despite wanting to discard it, vs becoming a rage-infused berserker with such disgustingly high determination that makes even the demons he fights question his humanity.
@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
I agree, though Griffith's decision was much more blunt and in-your-face. And as you said, I don't think that Guts' decision has been totally concluded yet. It's been a rigorous process hanging on to his last shreds of humanity. I've seen some interesting takes on Griffith's current situation regarding his humanity and morals, but I won't say anything to refrain from spoilers.

Even though Griffith decided to discard his humanity he had the most "friends" and the most opportunities to become a human again, while in Guts' case when he decided to maintain his humanity he had almost no "friends" and he had the most opportunities to lose his humanity. This also captured in Monster ( the anime ) when Johan is praised by almost everyone, it is something that truly exists in the real world as well which is kinda scary, for people to be like Griffith and Johan they almost always need to become evil and lose their humanity yet people like them are praised the most. Just try it out, try to act like Griffith or Johan for a couple of months and you will realise that everyone will start loving you, but you will see that, because it is not your true personality you don't love the people who love you, because they would not love you if you were your true self, and once that happens you should go back to being yourself... ( I am in high school so I have a lot of free time, and I tried acting like Johan for around a year, and boy did everyone start praising me, I was bored in the first place so I was fine with it, then I realised that I had no "true friends" so I immediately stopped acting like them, it is a pretty interesting thing to try and it is really not boring I even enjoyed it quite a lot except for the part when you no longer love anyone back ( except you family, very very close friends...etc ) because they don't love you, they love the person which you tried to copy for a few months because you were bored... )

I feel like one the most gut wrenching things about the eclipse, besides the obvious ones, is that no one died with any dignity, except perhaps judeau, and they aren’t simply devoured. It’s not like a predator devouring prey, they’re all torn apart for entertainment and cruelty, and they’re used for psychological damage on their fellows, best see this in pippin we see him fight and defend his friends only to later see him from a distance seemingly unharmed only to realize he was torn to pieces and fit back together just to torment whoever has any hope in seeing him. All the band of the hawk died like tertiary characters which after the golden age arc none felt like, their deaths all felt unfair to their character which they absolutely were and it was completely on purpose. One of the most amazingly crafted moments in all of fantasy.

Also, I don't think Griffith is a full-blown psychopath. He feels deep empathy for others' well-being and feelings; as we have seen many times. Following the second attempt on his life, in particular, he asks Guts to spare his comrades this vision of him as a scheming monster. Though his words must be taken with a grain of salt, as the characters in Berserk never truly understand their own thought processes, Griffith knows he would have the unconditional support of his men. But - for their sakes - he wants them to believe in their own just cause. In their leader. This kind of thing has also been historically used as a tool for control, sure - and he utilises this later in the most recent chapters of the manga - but it strikes me more a benefit of these kinds've decisions; and not simply the end goal. Griffith cares. But he also respects individual choice. He doesn't want to force people to follow him. He simply accommodates their decision to lock arms and pursue his dream. He bleeds for them. He suffers for them. And, in turn, they do the same for him. But there is more to Griffith than comradery. And here you hit the nail - he has something that drives him. Something that, for anyone else, would be considered a delusion of grandeur. He wants a kingdom. But for what? Just to have it? A toy to play with and abuse as he sees fit? We can't know for sure. But we CAN know that [[MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD]]... ... ... ... When he DOES get it Griffith is hardly a tyrant. He stops tyrants. He channels the rage of the Apostles. He leaves his citizens happy, his followers appeased. He returns to Charlotte, and takes her in as his wife. He doesn't need to do any of this (as far as we know), and yet he does. He still cares for Guts, and finds himself struggling to restrain his feelings. Even 'bad' actions, like the attempt on Rickert's life, fall into a vague area of "Was HE the one to give the order?" You're right when you say that Griffith is subtle and Nuanced. But you are wrong to imply that he sheds these subtleties and nuances upon his ascension. If anything, we know less now, than he did before. He can take his dream at ANY moment. So what is stopping him? Why save stragglers caught in forests, under the attack of monsters? Why shield the population from Apostles? Why spare Guts, a sacrifice who would no doubt increase Griffith's own potential upon his death? There's a bigger goal at stake than a kingdom. Manga revelations will take years, though, I bet. :P In conclusion - and all that said - Griff DOES have a lot of sociopathic/psychopathic elements, but the man cares. His style of empathy, however, is rooted in psychology and philosophy, rather than superficial emotion. Griff's a thinker. And he thinks he can guide his followers to be more than they are. Whether another huge sacrifice or crazy uprising happens in the future, though, remains to be seen. :P

I think that you have very good points. But somehow after all the tortures he went through I believe most of the things you mention were vanished. He lost all of his humanity. I'm not sure wether he represents the status quo (and he sort of means well, as a ruler that is lead by logic and Gutz just represents an agent of chaos. Since that world is also ruled by entropy) or he has like a secret plan and Falconia is about to be sacrificed just like he did with the band of the hawk. (Sorry if I said something nonsensical since my mother tongue is Spanish)
@Lateralus13574 жыл бұрын
When Griffith ascended into Femto he absolutely lost those subtleties and nuances. The Godhand are incarnations of the desire that caused them to ascend. However, when he was reincarnated back into flesh, whether it be from the inclusion of the demon baby in his egg or just a fact of being a physical being again, that's when he regained some of his nuance and humanity even.

I disagree with what you said about griffith still having emotions etc. when he ascends to femto. Griffiths goal from the start imo wasnt only to be a ruler but to be seen as a hero or a savior for people. The reason that griffith doesnt do many evil actions after he ascends is because his goal fundamentally involves helping people in a way. He wants them to see him as a hero. My point is griffiths seemingly good hearted actions after his ascension truly stem from his selfish desires and dreams.

One thing that I also always thought is this. Griffith never didn't see guts as an equal of sorts. Even though guts never did realize it the fact that he cared for the band of the hawk and wanted to see the group thrive was his dream. Griffith knew this. Also his strength and valor was testimony to his ability being comparable to him. I also do think that the second fight between the two was pivotal to this. As soon as guts won griffith knew that he was his equal...and his true friend. Also this was griffith's ONLY friend. He was the only one he ever felt close to. Despite him saying what he had said he had hoped guts would stay with him forever. But it didn't happen and guts left. The loneliness that griffith must've felt was probably mind boggling. Even during and after the eclipse when he becomes femto he does not kill guts despite having so many chances to. Other apostles and god hands attempt to kill him but griffith doesn't seem to care. I think because deep down inside his twisted mind he still sees guts as his irreplaceable friend. The idea of his friend dying may bother him so much despite his evil nature that the best he decides to do is to leave him alone and let him live as long as he may.
@shadowthekelpie51478 жыл бұрын
He was planning to kill Guts during the Eclispe. But the Skull Night MVP ruined his plan.
@ryanjones_rheios8 жыл бұрын
An additional level to this is that, in a bit of dramatic irony, when Guts defeats Griffith on the hill he almost becomes Griffith's better. He has many of Griffith's traits in that moment, as Casca later berates him for, but then Guts does something very inverse of Griffith. He invites Casca along, not to own her or control her but because he wants to be with her. She's as much a part of his dream, he can share it. That one swordfight underscores that, in his own fashion, Guts has ascended past Griffith. Which is why dragging him down during the Eclipse is so important to Griffith. HE cannot have a better in his mind. Which is why more recently when Guts foretells that 'Griffith will continue to fly higher. That is the nature of the Hawk/Falcon', I think he's foreshadowing the next goal of Griffith. I think Griffith's going to try and either dominate the Godhand, or maybe even just kill Void. And with the way that the Godhand was scattered during the Convergence it could all be part of his plan.
@EXHellfire8 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that Guts inviting Casca to come along with him is something that Griffith never seemed to do. To Guts, Casca is irreplaceable but Griffith saw only Guts as irreplaceable and didn't seem to care nearly as much about her. In a way, Guts became the Griffith that valued Casca, and this could (depending on how you think) also mean that he surpassed Griffith, in one area at least, that of compassion and humility.

It is just that he starts to lose his guts: first, when Guts leaves his ass; then his views weaken after the torture; then, finally, he completely loses them alongside his humanity during the eclipse. Truly, a tragedy concluded in one man's causality.

Major spoilers in this comment (you are warned) I also think Femto's rape of Casca was part of a plan to have her return to the physical world and have a physical baby that he could be reborn into, skirting the "rules" preventing the godhand materializing into our plane. Guts was probably intended to die though, so skull knight foiled that plan. Also since Casca was already pregnant, the rape only caused the demon-baby miscarriage, but the kid was still good, helping Guts and Casca. When the baby was "saved" by the Egg of Creation, fate got its way and Femto was able to incorporate its body to grow a new Griffith body, but since it contained portions of the physical Guts+Casca baby there was a flaw introduced (mentioned in the reunion on the field of swords). I bet that comes into play later on. The Od/Astral portion of the demon baby was not seemingly incorporated into Griffith though, seems it was ejected from the body and can manifest to help its parents on Full moons (the disappearing kid). Though if Griffith continues to weaken the walls of reality by destroying the spirit forests, he might show up more. This new manga hiatus is killing me, just when we might get Casca back. I bet Griffith is gonna be attacking Elfheim soon. Maybe a grown up Rickert and the BakiRaka and General watshisname will show up to lend a hand (due to the time difference in Elfheim).

@lanzelotz268 жыл бұрын
Interesting point! I think you are right about Griffith rape of Casca. So if even this action was something, Griffith did to achieve his goal. That makes his goal even more interesting. Griffith commited the most horrible crimes, but its seems he also brings a utopia-like state to the world (well at least for those who made it to his city).And if Guts would destroy Griffith, would he not also destroy this new world? So will Guts eventually have to face a similar decision as Griffith during the eclpise? Destroy Griffith and destroy everything or sacrifice his own right for revange so that not all scrifices before were in vain? But perhaps Griffith end goal is much more sinister. At least it seems that good forces in the world, like Flora, the Flowerstorm King and the arguably good skull knight oppose Griffith.
@Henbot8 жыл бұрын
Great point. I still feel a huge element of it was definitely done out of spit but he is constantly planning Griffith. He may not have even felt anything, which makes it pretty horrible he violates and destroys Casca like that just for his dream, totally matches his character too and because he looking ahead and so I can see it being entirely also calculated. Also think Elfheim will be attacked by Griffith and time will move for others outside Elfheim

unlikely, griffith would have let the demons murder casca and guts at the end if skull knight did not help them.
@Henbot8 жыл бұрын
kagetsuki23 Likely but also we know that a lot of it is preordained and part of Guts story is him struggling and seeming to be the fish in the pond rather then the reflection. Berserk taught me a valuable lesson about friendship. In berserk from the beginning when guts and Griffith meet you can tell that he puts his dream above all, yes he might be very attached to Guts at times but when it came to his dream he valued it more than his friendship with guts. In the real world application I now examine the people I consider my friends very carefully, in the pass I would call people fake who talked behind back or egod infront of girls;but in reality they weren't fake they were true to their selves, I've always known that they've had an ego or they would talk behind people's back to me, I expected them to suppress their personality when it came to me because I was their friend which is wrong. Basically I learned to become more observant of others and to understand people's natures, If I encounter someone who has a personality trait that is toxic i will try not to get to attach to them; Or if I do interact with them I will try to be aware negative flaws

He's a victim of circumstance and has been shaped by the tragic events of his life. And despite all of his tragedies, he never gives up. Griffith on the other hand choses to become a tragic figure. The tragedy of the eclipse and his own downfall as a human being was done by his own choosing.
@Alfareon7 жыл бұрын
You could make the analogy that Guts and Griffith were like the Queen and King on a chessboard. The Queen, Guts, is mighty and thus deserves the sacrifice of pawns on her behalf, but is ultimately expendable if it means victory (Griffith becoming God-Hand) is assured.

How do you put Hunter X Hunter in the same category as Berserk? I like HxH, but it's not simular to Berserk at all and doesn't have the depth of Berserk.
@TC-by3il7 жыл бұрын
I certainly like HxH, but I feel like it's a tad overrated, and a lot more illogical than Berserk. Berserk is very, VERY dark, but the story and character development is incredible. HxH on the other hand is a little more "wacky" in my opinion, a little more pseudo philosophical. I feel like a lot of people are projecting depth into the weird tone it has. I honestly don't particularly like how twisted and weird some of the Japanese animes and mangas can be, but with Beserk, as gory, brutal and psychological as it is, the overarching themes, story and characters makes it worth it. Same with something like GoT. I like the show, but I feel like the gratuitous violence is a little too much. I don't understand why everything has to be so ultra violent. Btw, I'd highly recommend the new series American Gods. Another show that I feel like the violence is made up for by the merits of the show.
@TC-by3il7 жыл бұрын
Haha I had the exact same reaction to that scene in American Gods. Had to skip past it lol. I don't have anything against gays either, but that was way too visceral for me. As I said, gratuitous violence and sex is very much in atm! Add in LGBT viewpoints and sheesh. Haven't been anything like that since though, but each episode is very distinct and different. That's what I like about it, it's very unique and incredibly well done. If you liked the theme and feel of the series before that, I would definitely recommend watching more. Anyway, I guess HxH is both. I heard the manga is being continued again right? That's pretty cool!

Slightly before the Fantasia Arc, I couldn't help to see Griffith and Guts as the embodiment of the Ying and Yang symbol. Griffith is the Yin : following a bright path with a dark and evil soul. 9:17 This picture alone really made me feel for Gutts looking back at it now. First thoughts of Gutts was that he was a vile cruel man. At that moment I wondered why such a edgy guy seemed so bothered by a threat by a little girl when he wouldn't even lift a finger to help her and even put her in harms way. Then the Golden Age arc happened and I understood everything.

Wow, this was such a great character analysis on the both of them. I would have liked if you touched on the fact when Guts wanted leave, at the end of their duel he basically held Griffith's life in his hands. Further driving the fact he completely lost control of the situation.

The ending to this video had me tearing up. One of the best moments in the series as a whole was the role reversal in Guts and Griffith's duel. Hey, does anyone else realize that unlike Griffith, Guts’ dream changes over the years. Like first his dream is to become stronger, then it is to take revenge on Griffith, and then his dream becomes saving/protecting/curing Casca. Meanwhile, Griffith’s dream just stays the same. To have a kingdom...and that’s it (like what is even the point of him wanting to become king besides ambition. It’s almost like Griffith doesn’t really think about why he wants him dream). I feel there is an important theme there, but I’m not sure if anyone else has discussed it or noticed it.

well, its was clear that griffith cared about his mercenary band, he prayed for and honoured the death of one of his soldiers, he sold his body so that he can safely expand his army rather than get tribute through more conflict, he choosed to stick by his men even when the nobles were asking to leave casca and guts behind, the biggest thing to note is that his sacrifice was his band which means that he at one point in his existence, he deeply cared ans loved his army and I think that also provides griffith complexity seeing that his character was a conflict between chasing ones purpose to caring about those who get pushed or blown away by the chase. he had to choose a decision on what was more important to him, his dream, or the people who he met and cared for.

Brilliant analysis! Thank you so much for sharing. I think you hit the nail on the head in your analysis and exploration of Guts and Griffith, and the importance of their relationship as the driving force in the series. People tend to focus on Guts and Casca, understandably, but it's really Guts relationship with Griffith that's the most important in the story, the relationship that really encapsulates its most pertinent themes and messages. There's deep tragedy infused in both of their characters, and where they started, and how they've ended up.

Rewatching your old Berserk videos while I’m finally reading the manga in its entirety for the first time. (Seen the original anime many years ago and personally thought the 2016 one wasn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be). Just wanted to say how much your channel means to me and I’m sure many others. The choice of media, themes and even music choice…..just about everything you cover is stuff that I’ve already been passionate about. When you released a Xenoblade Chronicles video(my favorite video game of all time…calling it just a video game almost feels insulting to be honest) after using the amazing soundtrack in your videos for years felt long overdue and I was practically brought to tears listening to it because that game means so much to me as well. Thanks for devoting your time to this type of content all these years. You have such an incredible way of capturing the essence of the media you’re covering like few others can. It’s been a joy to listen to through the ups and downs of life, some particularly rough times and some good ones as well.

@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
I honestly have trouble thinking of characters that are more well-constructed than Griffith. Guts is great too.
@Renirhs8 жыл бұрын
I my view twords the golden age arc. Is that Griffith had actually forgotten his dream and actually seemed content with just fighting along side guts. And the only reason I think he said those things about a true friend is that he didn't want to think anything could hold him back. As well for him sleeping with gov Gennen, he had two options fight ten battles and lose more men or spend one night with a creepy perv. And he did way the risk because the day before he saw a child in his military die and it did strike a cord with him, even if he doesn't want to admit it. So I actually saw him as a man who did have conviction and did have sympathy for those who fougth with him. i think guts was different because Griffith actually viewed him as an equal and may have even had romantic views of guts, It goes to show that Griffith doesn't care who he sleeps with but he does have sights for someone and keeping him under his subordination kept guts close. This was a reason why casca hated guts, that and she mentions that guts is the only one who can get griffith to forget about his dreams. I can go all day but I saw many layers to Griffiths character and saw him as someone to sympathize with, but you were right his down fall was his own. As far as arogance goes I didn;t really see it as such. Griffith wasn't of noble birth but he strived and worked every day at it. So all that confidence he had he had to create from nothing.

Depiction of Griffith and Guts as "light" and "dark" characters delivers a real message: Just because someone looks and presents themselves as good, does not mean they are good. I think the most interesting concept that so far I haven't seen or talked about is how the big three never really talked about the situations arose and how they felt concerning them. Their implicit lack of communication led to the hawks and coincidentally the big three's fates. Ironically enough there choice to not speak about their issues led to their demise in accordance to the fate that befell them. I hope that all makes sense.

I do like this video. I like the break down. But from my personal perspective. To be perfectly honest and clear. Griffith is the demented and twisted version of Christ Jesus. Everything I heard and saw explained about Griffith was Jesus in reverse. Jesus sacrificed his life for all [people he loved] and attained Kingship or God status (however you want to put it) Griffith sacrificed people who loved him to attain that exact same thing. The one thing that this video leaves out about Griffith that is even more surreal is that the 4 members of the God hand all tricked him since he was a child in chasing their dream to make him one of them. But in the bible while Jesus was on earth he said many times that he did these things and said these things not of his own. That he was not the source of these things.
@Aleczandxr8 жыл бұрын
You're spot on with this comment, very good points. Unfortunately if I tackled every single thing about each character, especially in a series like Berserk, the video would have been far too long. I limited myself to primarily analyzing the characters' internal conditions and role in the story, and decided not to cover symbolism and religious parallels (or anti-parallels, as you say). Hopefully you can forgive me for that, it was hard deciding what to prioritize.
