Hey all - in case anyone is curious, I have read the ending of the manga, but this video does not spoil anything past where the anime currently covers and is friendly for anime-only watchers. Also, please excuse the occasional repeated use of clips for this one. I talked about Floch for nearly 20 minutes here but he actually hasn’t had a ton of screen time, especially proportionate to his importance. So there wasn’t much variety to choose from. Aside from that, hope you have a good one and I hope you enjoy the video!

I actually really enjoyed Floch's character and I didn't hate him until the point where he wanted to kill Levi and Hange. Levi is my favourite character in the whole show and trying to kill him is a big no no for me. That's when I switched and started routing against him. And everytime he hindered the alliance, my dislike for grew more and more. His death was mildly satisfying although I wanted him to die way sooner and more violently. But I can't deny how great of an antagonist he is.

I personally think that a lot of people would end like Floch, being in a similar situation. I myself belong to the category of people that would rather prefer not being remembered after death but I know in my environment people, who are the contrary. Often this people join political, religious or social movement groups.... sometimes the problem is that by trying to stand out of the crowd (either as an individual or a group) your ego becomes more important than really trying to help others.... They get so obsessed by their goal that it becomes irrelevant how they get it... because they're after the ''right'' goal everything they do to reach it can't be evil and it's justified ... but if someone/a group they don't like use they same tactics, then they become angry >_>

There's something both Floch and Jean demonstrates that don't get talked about enough. Their honesty about their standing in life. One of the things that get under my skin in real life is someone who goes out of their way to be seen as cool but actually isn't. But for Floch and Jean, they KNOW who they are how cowardly they are. So they run with it and work to change themselves.

I did wonder a bit if Floch was meant to be a bit like 'what if season 1 jean was dropped in at season 4' in a similar way to Gabi referencing Eren, the girl Sasha saved referencing Sasha, Falco with Armin, the girl Mikasa saved referencing her, as well as others I forget at the moment. But I definitely felt like a lot of the younger characters were being paralleled with main characters as part of the next generation/cycle of hatred theme.

I would argue that Jean is the direct opposite of a coward. Yes he is afraid and he is open about that fear but he still fights and still risks his life for his comrades. I would say a big difference between Jean and Floch is that Jean is willing to be nuanced and not see everyone who is not an Eldian as the enemy. While Floch enjoys killing Jean does what needs to get done but gets no joy in taking lives.

Let’s not forget Floch’s maturity: Zeke ripped his commander and hundreds of his closest friends to shreds, and thre Floch into a total hell. A typical shonen character would dedicate themselves to revenge against Zeke (Levi) yet Floch completely abandons his own (likely) hatred towards Zeke, instead acting like his ally. I’m sure that took quite a lot of maturity and integrity

thats why he becomes such a great endgame antagonist. you understand. yet holy disagree with his actions, even when in the long run they do make sense. this is because the sacrifices that would be needed to be made can only have been done by broken men forced into a state of wordily maturity like him and eren. normal people do not fight to creat genocied for the greater good, they fight to stop it for the greater good. hes not a normal person anymore, he and all his fallowers became a willing monster fallowing the demon to the ends of the literal world. this is defently not a standard shonon we watched monsters be made infront of our eyes yet did not see until what was happening was to horrific to even imagine.

Floch is unironically one of my favorite characters in the story, because like you pointed out here, his reactions are all very human. Even his hatred and sadism is understandable from the perspective that he' wishes to pay Marley back for all the shit they've done. The series is about the cycle of hatred after all, and Floch is one of the best examples of how hate can change a person. Plus, his criticism of Eren and Levy at the end of S3 was totally on point.

During the Raid on Liberio arc, my favorite line was when Floch said, "There's nothing here but enemies and the places they live". The simplicity of Floch's mindset is refreshing in a story with so much complexity. He just wants to validate his tragic experiences by punishing the people he deems responsible for them. I don't agree, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Think about it. You wake up from a hellhole suicide charge, found your commander to still be alive and with your exhausted body both physically and mentally carry his body to be saved, with even the 2nd in command agreeing, the famous captain being close to the commander with only two people emotionally asking for the other guy to be saved. And then you see your effort being in vain with said captain giving a somber explanation that he cant let him continue to be this. If any of us were Floch, we would beat Levi until he would be unrecognizable. This might be reading a little deep into it but think about Flock’s name as well. A group of birds is called a flock, and Flock is a member of the survey corps represented by the wings of freedom. His name literally symbolizes how he’s just one person from the crowd, one of the forgettable fodder that dies in every mission that the survey corps undertakes. That, along with the fact that he has no special powers, no special skill, not graduating in the top ten and used to be a member of the garrison filled with average soldiers, really sells his background as just an average guy who became this way due to what he experienced.

To me, Floch is that necessary perspective to AoT because his perspective adds more depth to the narrative in a world like theirs. It's hard to deny their existence in a war-torn world like theirs; whether it be motivated by nihilism or some twisted version of someone's philosophy/sentiment, his voice is necessary. His character arc encompasses what no one would dare to address. Hypocritical, sadistic and in many ways cut-throat heartless, he ironically becomes the representative of those who have been denied truth and have been left in the dark by those in power. Honestly, I think having Isayama adding him into the story is one the best thematic decisions to AoT.

I think the part that I found the scariest about Floch is how so many of us can become like him. During the attack on Liberio, while it's certainly tragic having to see innocent people and children die, especially since they had nothing to do with what happened on Paradis, I honestly felt a sense of catharsis in seeing the Marleyans experiencing the same pain and loss that they inflicted upon the island Eldians, and ended up agreeing with Floch. Much in the same way how someone who was abused as a kid by their parents would like to inflict the same kind of suffering upon them.

Holy crap. I've read this story, but I think I finally realized what Marlo's purpose truly was. We got to know Marlo just a little more than Floch as a character to start. Marlo was the one new recruit who was actually forming bonds with the core squad. His backstory as a former MP turned scout who wanted to do more for people? And his dorkiness and tsun-tsun relationship with Hitch? Makes him likable and makes us hopeful for his future. Given the choice at the time of Erwin's suicide charge: If there was to be a survivor? If it wasn't Erwin, most in the audience would have preferred Marlo to be the one to survive rather than Floch, who at that time, upon realizing firsthand that war is hell, was already suffering panic attacks when he realized he was being ordered to charge into his death. Marlo died. He was fodder. For mostly nothing. It didn't need to be Marlo. It could have been anyone riding that horse that day. In the grand scheme of things? His death was truly pointless. His story ended for virtually nothing. The most generous thing you could apply to his death was that he heroically took the rocks that could have hit someone else. Hell, did it even make a difference if they were one guy short? Or even two? The whole job was just to serve as a distraction. The plan didn't specifically need him at all. His entire point as a character is to serve Floch's development. He existed to viscerally illustrate Floch's point: He didn't want to die so pointlessly. And we know what that looks like because of Marlo. Because Marlo surviving would have been the more likely scenario in another story. It would have "meaning" storywise. Marlo was the guy who plot armor normally would have saved in that charge. We were introduced to him, he bonded with the main cast, he had goals and he seemed to have an arc of sorts in the cards. And then? His story ended. Cut in the middle. Because that's what happens in a desperate war. The unsatisfying and abrupt end of Marlo's arc is what begins Floch's. Marlo reinforces Floch's character and drives home exactly what he's afraid of and the fate he wants to avoid. He gets he's expendible. He gets he's fodder. He just doesn't want to end up like Marlo. Someone with his whole life ahead of him and yet died a death that didn't need to be his.

If you reversed the story. It would seem like those “this is reality and these new guys are dumb” troupe in movies. Floch wants victory for his people, is the last survivor of his team, tries to save his leader who’ve won them many victories, and some hotshot prodigy and his sister wants to save their childhood bestie instead. Then afterwards want to make peace with the enemies who’s cause them and their people suffering and meaningless deaths since season 1. He’s the guy that knows peace isn’t an option while the others want to hold hands and sing kumbaya. I don’t even like him that much. He isn’t even on my top 10 favorite characters on AOT but it’s so easy to see why his motives and actions are more realistic than any of the characters. People just like to hate him cause he’s not cool with their favorite character chans

Amen. Seriously! Floch wasn't (completely) wrong. The rest of the world doesn't just want to kill the Eldians, they want to brutalize them. They want them to suffer. They go out of the way to make them suffer. People want to talk about how unexcusable Floch's and Eren's actions are but tend to forget that Marley threw the first punch. At the end of the day, Marley and the World wanted a war. And they lost.

That's the thing I really like about Floch. I KNOW he is in the right in so many things but I can't agree with the things he does. But just because I am an all-knowing watcher who sees everything. Would I have been dropped in the world of AoT I wouldn't know where my loyalty would be...

Floch's only "crime" for many viewers is that he spoke against the MC's wishes, and for that he's the A*Hole. While he did become radicalized, he made some very good points along the way and you can understand how a guy like him could see things the way that he does.

@@clurosencrans3871If you are from Paradis and Marley and the rest of the world is going to kill you and your parents, wife, sons, and your daughters, you wouldn't say that. Instead you will support Floch and hate the MC. The reason why most of the fanbase hate floch is because he disagree with the MC like Armin and Mikasa.

Love your Snk videos. It's great to see some reflection on unliked characters like Floch. I think Isayama saw Floch as a question to the reader, "Do you really think this wouldn't, couldn't be you ?" Floch lives somewhere inside all of us, and that is deeply scary to think about. So props to you for making a 20 minutes video about it.

The sympathetic and "open minded" characters were stuck in inaction that would have let to the death of eldia. Floch absolutely had the right mindset even if he went to far at times. Our main characters were passiv and useless post time skip until they were forced into action.

I've always found it weird when people (including floch himself) call him a coward, when he was most definitely the opposite. In the first place, he joined the survey corp, which he himself said he knew he was going to die at some point, he just found the idea of a meaningless death to be terrifying. He still went on the suicide charge with Erwin. He consistently puts himself in danger to make change, and gets called a coward.

I like Floch. He's more human than most of the characters. And he was right about Eren and Mikasa. Eren and Mikasa would always prioritize each other over the Scout Regiment. Mikasa cared even less about it than Eren, as long as she got to be with him she'd let all of them die, lol. He went way too far later on, but at that point the nature of the show has changed completely, so meh.

It's actually very intresting how scene with instructor Keith mirrors Erwin's recruitment. I think that it exists not only to show how ruthless Floch have bocome, but to prove his point that people have a right to know what they are actually signing up to. While using Erwin's "shinzo sasageyo", he makes kadets beat up the instructor. Floch basically shows them that they would have to dirty their hands to make Yeagerists goals become a reality. And blood on their hands will not always belong to the enemy behind the walls.

Man Floch gets so much hate but i like his character. At the end of S3 he's like the old Jean, bringing Eren and Mikasa down to earth and making them understand that them and their friends are not the center of the world. At least Armin, the smartest one, gets that... As for S4, I couldn't even dislike him even if he seems as extreme as it gets. Man fights for its ideal and to be real he is on the side of the people of Paradis who are sick of the military's inaction...

I think Floch's motivation is less about a personal need for a place. I think he was inspired about Erwin's speech right before essentially all the Scouts died. And he survived through pure blind luck and couldn't save the one person he believed that could save their people at the time. He didn't want the lives of the comrades that died to be meaningless. And I think he then starts adopting Erwin's key characteristic and belief as Floch understood: the ability to send those below him to hell for the greater good and that Eren is the key to the salvation of Eldia. Floch feels like he has to be Erwin, bc he feels like he now is the one who can fulfill Erwin's role in the salvation of Eldia. Floch and Armin both feel that same responsibility and stress, but it manifests differently for both of them. There is nothing concrete in the manga and the anime that can substantiate my next point. I don't believe Floch is being a dickhead, for the sake of being dickhead. I think one of the reasons he is acting this way is that he holds many of our main characters directly responsible for the choice to let Armin live over Erwin. He resents that they weren't able to put themselves through a personal hell for the greater good. And the second reason is he knows what he will have to do will cause many of his friends to hate him, bc in spite of his world view he still likes them. I think that's why he spends so much time trying to convince many of the main crew that this is for the best and trying to remind them of their past desires and how they are possible now, most especially Jean. And he knows deep down it won't work, so he is preemptively cruel so that he could feel like he earned the hatred, instead of feeling like they hate him for doing the "right" thing.
