Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku,Taisho Sanshoku, andShowa Sanshoku varieties.

i have a kikokuryu ( it look like it ) for about 2 years now but after 1 year he got some yellowish tint on the side of his face/ cheeks and a bit more just before his " tail"... is he still a kikokuryu or a kumonryu ?

Kikokuryu is Hikarimono but Kumonryu is not. Hikarimono has more metallic color and shines under light. You can compare the fin and backline of Kohaku with Hariwake or Kujaku to see the difference. (but the Hariwake in this video is doitsu Hariwake, still shines but not that easy to see) Both kikokuryu and kumonryu can have red. But those appear later in life are not considered to be good usually(It's called nibanhi=second red). But it happens. The genes of Koi are very complicated.

I'm not the biggest fan of Kohaku, Sanke and Showa. There is a sea of other beautiful Koi fish and there should really be something new within Koi so it is not is Kohaku, Showa and Sanke who constantly win the Koi Shows. I love the Goshiki and hmmm many others, just to name one more ... Hariwake. And I have two wonderful Tancho in my pond.
