Aleks is someone who is really hard on himself. If he doesn't like something he will private it regardless of how many people it helped.

He strikes me as someone who doesn't like himself very much. As such, he probably tries to ingratiate himself to people he views as cool, hoping that their acceptance will take away his self-loathing. Instead, in doing so he betrays himself, grows to resent this new 'cool' identity and tries to reinvent himself. Distancing himself from his earlier identity.
