Aleksandra Ginzburg was born in Minsk, Belarus on February 4, 1930. On June 24, 1941, Minsk was bombed and part of the city burned. By July, Jews were ordered into the Minsk ghetto but Aleksandra and her cousin managed to escape. She was initially sheltered by Denis and Nina Galahov but was moved to a friend's house in Rubejevich where she would live as their niece for two and a half years.
