Back around the year 2000 my return trip from work consisted of jogging from midtown Manhattan, across the Brooklyn bridge, to DeKalb Ave subway station, where I'd then ride to Sheepshead Bay. This was all done after midnight. No one ever bothered me, either. (It was really quite nice.)

Aleksi is right - Been living in Finland for around since 2011 when I moved to Punavuori in Helsinki, then Vaasa and since 2012 been living in Åland Islands. i am originally from the south of Spain, Alicante and we get sun and you know, super lovely weather. I tell you 100% now that Finland is a top notch country I was able to create a life, family, build my own house and even have my own company now. Yes, is not difficult but the security this country offers is stunning. We can just leave the car and house open at any time of the day and nothing happens. Recommended for those who have kids and want a save place.

Hei Aleksi! I moved to Finland past June and, before moving here, I was very hesitant. Before making the decision to move, I watched our videos and helped me a lot to understand on what to prepare (I come from Spain, and life is pretty different down there!), so I'd like to thank you for that! Anyhow, one year after, I'm finishing my first year of my PhD in Aalto University, I have an amazing group of friends and a woderful Finnish girlfriend. I'd recommend to everybody planning on moving here (specially Helsinki) to do so in the beggining of the summer, as meeting people then is quite easy because of the good weather and also multiple free events are organized weekly around the city! :D

Debt to GDP ratio for Finland is actually quite good. Although the figure of €138Bn sounds like a lot it’s actually less than 60%. It’s lower than most European countries including France, Germany, the Uk and Austria. The problem in Finland is that debt and austerity are fetishised by politicians to hammer whoever runs the country when in fact Finnish debt levels are actually quite low by international standards. Imagine if all your debts including your mortgage, car payments, personal loans etc amounted to less than 60% of your salary, I’d say you’d be doing all right.

I visited Tampere last March for two days. The airport was abandoned. When I landed, it seemed like there was nobody else waiting for the bus to take me to Tampere Dream Hostel. I went to the Lenin Museum and Werstas industrial museum. One display I remember was a college dormitory in 1992. I also visited a library there and a public sauna. I tried to jump into the pool after being in the hot sauna, but it was like hitting a block of ice. I also visited a K market and an S market. I tried villi because that was something I don't see in the US. I ordered a cup of tea at a shopping center across from the hostel I was staying in. I told the lady behind the counter that I don't understand Finnish. I thought "Ma on" was a short way to say "Mina olen..." but I was wrong. The woman behind the counter did not understand me until I said Mina olen... I also visited University of Tampere while seeing the city.

I know a few people in employment circles and the ageism issue is a problem but due to labour shortages it’s kinda sorting itself out. That said, it’s a problem everywhere. Some people in Finland are extremely ignorant, racism, xenophoba and descrimination is everywhere and here it's next level. The housing in Australia is a disgrace and need to be fixed. Great video. My wife is moving to Finland soon. What would you recommend as regular couple activities worth doing or checking out during weekends to not get bored staying at home in winter?
@BeauNero666
@BeauNero666 Жыл бұрын
Sauna, music venues, local markets, museums and going out to eat/drink. Observe and listen to people around you, there is a lot of culture in Finland. Just absorb it in at first, linger on a bench or in a bar. Don't expect to make fast friends, but once you make some conversation, you'll discover such great lifelong friendships! Good luck and happy new year! Kippis!

@@BeauNero666 thanks. I've been living in Finland since 2015 but all along lived by myself so didn't care much. Summer is effortlessly fun. I'm just worried how to make sure my wife feels it's not all white snowy in winter rather there are activities worth doing even during winter. Let's see. New year to you too. Kippis!

Very informative video! Not that I have the means to move in the near future, but is it true that Finland is autism friendly? I came across something that it is, but would like to hear it from somebody who lives there. I have high functioning autism and would like to know if, for instance, there are good services, medicines, and so forth for folks like myself. Your points about Finland is idyllic to why I would move there. A second question I may add, how does the moving process work, and how challenging is it? Okay, maybe three. Ha! Love to Finland from the United States. And no, I'm not the American "bastard" portrayed, just a simple person. lol.

@JamesPond62

Unfortunately yes, more the further north you go due to the abundant swampland which is also funnily enough where the country's name comes from (suomi (old Finnish) > suomaa, lit. Swamp land/country) A few years ago I was driving home to Rovaniemi through Ranua, an area littered with large swamps, and there were enough mosquitoes, midges and other such bugs flying around to form what looked like dust devils on the road. Had to stop every fifteen minutes or so to wipe my windshield by hand just to see where I was going due to the damn thing getting so caked up in bug corpses. That said, that summer was a bit of an exception due to heavy snowfall in the winter followed by high temperatures in the summer, thus leading to a lot of warm stagnant water pooled up all over the place. You do still want to carry some insect repellant if you're planning on heading out to the woods during summertime, but for the most of the year you don't really need to worry about the bloodsuckers thanks to the cold weather.

Sounds like a place for less ambitious introverts who seek stability. High taxes means you get to benefit more if you are raising a family or have more medical needs. But not so great for self-sufficient singles.

Or people who are lost, and don't know how to get X place. Pretty sure, the every man's rights regarding picking berries and mushrooms, in privately owned land (Non government, as an example, native citizen owned). You need a permission of the land owner, in regards to public, yeap, go ahead. If I recall correctly, what I found rather surprising is that some Japanese people like to travel to Finland to buy mushrooms.

Great country to live in, I guess the main downside is to have Russia as neighbour and be once again invaded militarily. The concept of having a private property which is legally accessible to the public is hard to grasp, it would be impossible to get rid of squatters establishing themselves on your land.
