Thank you for this, I'm in IL and following this closely. I have a 13mo Rat Terrier that has to be walked for the mental stimulation and a 6yo Rat Terrier that cannot be vaxxed for canine influenza. This virus is making me very nervous because there's no data, so i don't know how long it can survive on surfaces and in what temps. The 13mo has her nose in everything when we walk, which is the main purpose of her walks. I'm probably over paranoid because we lost the 6yos littermate to an idiopathic bone marrow failure 2 years ago, but I do feel like I'm playing roulette when I take the younger one for walks. The sars covid aspect didn't even occur to me, so I found that hypothesis worthy of investigation. Hopefully there will be more information available soon. (Im now subscribing, I saw your recent comment on Pet Vet Corner). Thank you for all you do ❤

Greetings Dr. Em, Thank you SO much for this vlog on this very distressing illness. I reside in one of the red states on this illness map so I am now extremely concerned for my sweet girl. She is 2 and UTD on most vaccines except for bordatella as we do not board her, nor does she hang out with other dogs. We do use a mobile groomer every 8 weeks who only grooms one dog (in a large van) at a time. Should I be forgoing grooming appointments for a while OR asking my groomer how she disinfects her van and equipment in between clients? My dogs safety and wellness is my priority so whatever is most cautious is what I will do. TYSM for your vlogs and your very valuable time. 🐾💕

Your best bet is to contact your local veterinarian, get all respiratory vaccines updated, and ask them if they are seeing cases at this point. If they are, they may have grooming recommendations for you. Best wishes to you and to your dog 🐶

By puppies do you mean very young dogs? If so, we don't have specific information on this at this time, however very young animals do often feel more sick as their bodies have fewer reserves and are also trying to grow at the same time. Senior dogs, chronically ill dogs, brachycephalic dogs and immunocompromised dogs are also likely to have a harder time.

Have you seen the PM2.5 canine respirator masks? I think they became popular during wildfire outbreaks. I saw someone say that their vet approved having the dog wear one for short trips, like going to the vet, being among other dogs. Curious your opinion of those.

I'm so sorry to hear that your dog is unwell, that's so hard 😔 Make sure to isolate your dog from other dogs and if your dog's symptoms are bothering them you may need to go to an emergency clinic. I wish you all the best.

I have 3 corgis, ranging from 4 years to 5 months old. My two oldest ones are up to date, and so is my puppy. He got his last round of puppy shots on November 22, I was hoping to get him out more but with this virus, I am reluctant to do so like taking him to Petsmart and others. Even though he will ride in the cart. I want him to explore more but I want to play it safe. Do you think is safe to take him out even though riding in a shopping cart?

This is an excellent question - you would need to talk with your local vet clinic about if they are seeing an outbreak of this locally. However, due to how much covid is currently circulating (see this video to learn about how covid affects dogs and their brains, even with asymptomatic infections: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4Cwdn-Fi7WGadUsi=pCQILu7MdmgyrjLb ) and because your dog is well past their socialization period, I would not be taking your dog indoors around people.

@@VetMedCorner He has a very large following and is pretty dangerous to dog owners (not as bad as Cesar, but close...). He has a unique background due to being college educated in animal training as well as being an orca trainer for several years. Even I fell under his trap of loose leash training by yanking my dogs collar! I'm so happy that I stumbled across your videos. You helped change my behavior as well with my newly adopted dog from a rescue. No problem, and thank you for being so interactive with your community!

Considering that we have medical personnel in the home who have contracted C19 twice we are SO WORRIED about our Rescue dog especially since we know he has a compromised immune system (significant neutropenia) and has so for the last two years since our last bout of C19. We are keeping him away from all dogs, save one who is already apart of our regular exposure and doesn't go near other dogs but ours. Never expected to need a closed social group for our K9s.

A huge thank you to the medical personnel and all the work they do, it's so appreciated 💜 The stressor of having an immunocompromised dog definitely makes matters much tougher. Did you happen to see the info from when I covered how COVID affects cats and dogs? We have a research study demonstrating COVID can spread from humans to dogs and from one dog to another dog. That same study demonstrated neurodegeneration and damage to the blood brain barrier after COVID infection (even in dogs with asymptomatic infections). I also covered what to do to try prevent spreading COVID to pets. Let me know if you missed it, I can always grab you a link to the video.
