Some of those zona 4 and 1 scenes looked very familiar. Thanks for showing us a few different zones that we didn't experience. We did hear from the "Pan de Vida" non profit we served with when we were there that there are families that live near the landfill.

9:14 I'm from Guatemala, and live in the city, very close to zone 15. I don't agree with the opinion that there is a president who has invested in security, neither in the past and sure not today. This 2024 has been one of the worst times in security and in other issues. Near you where filming was a mass shooting some months ago. Security today is very bad. None of the presidents have taken that issue seriously, they only think in their security, no in the security of citizens.

I’d refrain from using the term “Mexican” tortilla as tortilla is a Mesoamerican gastronomy delight shared by many countries in the area - although it is consumed mainly by Mexico and Guatemala

Guatemala City is a very shy but incredible city. Lots of places to explore but Guatemalans tend to be really bad at using the internet. What I mean by that is that people don't always add their restaurant, bars, coffee shops, etc. to Google Maps and people don't usually do reviews therefore you really need a local in order to take you to the best spots.

Not a safe city in general. Crime is far from ending and robberies to car drivers, pedestrians and businesses still happens daily. Even "safe zones" are places where you must remain with some degree of alertness. The amount of private security you see all over the place is an indicator of how dangerous the city is.

It sounds like a jobs program, hiring all those security people! Or, a police state. Either way, it's sad that they leave other areas up to gang control and don't tackle that problem so everyone can live more freely.

It is to a high degree, you are right. What you notice is part of a very complex and entangled corruption scheme, that has been running for decades. Military elites that have great political and financial influence in the country, are the ones who own most security companies. These people are part of a sophisticated network of organized crime with the government, gangs and drug cartels. While they participate "creating safety" they also participate in crime and violence creation with all sorts of dark businesses.

Haha yes, so they have this crumbly feel with the corn taste. Like a corn cake but maybe a bit more steamier. I really liked it but you do need a sauce with it!
