Honestly, Alessandro Nesta was the most perfect defensive specimen I habpve ever seen. If you look at the fact Maldini wasn't at that world cup and Nest got an injured after one game. The defence of italy was Cannavaro and Materazzi who was determinant in that competition. Look very carefully at this video and you'll notice something - Nesta never just stops an attacker or a goal. He also achieves the best possible outcome by retaining the ball after a tackle, passing forward, placing it in touch instead of a corner, pulling it well out of danger or something of the sort. It's never just a random desperate tackle, it's a deliberate attempt to stop the attack full stop to the point it turns into possession for his team. Imagine the calibre of defender you have to be to do that with such consistency.

Nesta's genius was the impeccable interceptions and takles Timed to absolute perfection. That is an absolute joy to watch. Now a day it all about the attack play like Barça tiktak or Liverpool's gergine press. But AC Milan of Nesta, Maldini, Stam, and Cafu was all about the defense play. That made Serie A a real joy to watch.

There is still lots of skill in todays game but it's harder to show because of the speed and fitness that players possess now. Also teams nowadays are much more organised and drilled than they used to be. When I watch older matches it's amazing to see how much more time and space is available and how naive teams where then.
