This is the Japanese Singer 29u similar to the 29k and variations. It is the long-arm version and here I give a close up of why they are so popular with leather workers and shoe repairers. I hope you enjoy it.

As a teenager I taken my shoes into the cobblers in the late 80`s and over his shoulder I seen a 29 k 4 leather patcha , I was fascinated with the the look , he told me he mainly uses it for boots as it has a long neck, and the foot control, but it was mainly a show piece, I asked if he was selling it but he said not at the moment, As he showed me it in action, the clunking sound and the turning of the foot, then the way it walked, and the frame work at the top , it looked like part of an old cat steel railway bridge side, I was mesmerized, So a few years after I bought a barn shed one from wales, I loved it, I was just overwhelmed with the engineering it taken to come up with the functions it had for its time, but that noticeable clunking , its makes me laugh, From then on I caught the bug, bought the old 45k1 and 132k6 and a class 7-33 then another twin needle class 7, and some others, I have a thing with these big machines, no good for the back lifting them. I wish some one did a video on stripping down a class 7 then rebuild as this is what I want to do with mine, but there does not seem anything out there like that,

They are fascinating. I have a 29-4 treadle that I haven't played with yet. I hope to work up to it soon.

Could you do more videos on the 29 series? These have been having a revival but there are few videos explaining the models (comparisons) and the particulars of the 29. I just bought a 29-4 that needs restored. I’d love to see a restore video on one! I found out that you can’t seem to add the hand wheel to the front of the 29-4 like you can on later models…:-(

Hey Alex,Always great videos. Could you please tell me witch was made first Singer 15-91 or 201. I have a 1200-1 AD680614 and it shows it to be a 201. I am being told that the 15-91 was made in 1932 and the 201 was made in 1935. The 1200-1 has a date of 1934 but listed as a 201. Other than the knee lifter it still looks like a 201 to me. Thanks Alex this is Mike from America.

Isaac Singer had created his first model by 1951, by 1865 he was on his model 12 and by 1900 the Singer Company was up to model 99. That let's you know which models came first. However dating individual Singer machines can only be done by the serial number as both the model 15 and 201 were still in production at the same time. Hope that helps a little. We didn't have the 1200 over this side of the pond.

So is this walking foot machine (that actually looks like a walking foot!) in anyway similar to the detachable walking foot we use on our modern machines??
@alexaskaroff3 жыл бұрын
Yes it certainly 'walks' the work through.
