How is it possible I'm just now finding this? I was at this show. Pretty sure that’s my air guitarin’ right arm at 48:50. Alex was a total gentleman afterward. Had a great chat with him. He turned that guitar into a 6 string orchestra!

Watching live footage of Alex Chilton is always time well spent. Extra special seeing him play No Sex about 1 hr 10 min into the show. Song is as relevant and funny in 2020 as it was in the 1980s

I’m sure Alex threw a lot away at clubs like this, just having fun, but it seems to me he got a lot tighter after he joined up with the Posies a year or so later. His playing and singing at the Memphis Big Star show a couple years later was top notch stuff. This was a fun listen though. The guy just oozed cool.

Having listened to many an Alex bootleg 1977 to 1999, I'd say the level of tightness varied more from night to night (or even song to song within the same night) than dividing neatly into solo/Big Start buckets. When he had Doug Garrison on drums and Ron Easley on bass, and was playing a good R&B tune like "Sick and Tired" on a good night, he was never tighter, never grooved harder. This particular night is below average, and the audio and video quality are miserable. You can find high-quality gigs online (both in terms of sound and performance) like his 1987 show at Grinnell, his new year's eve 1991 show in Chapel Hill, and his 1994 show at The Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans that make the case for the special magic he had with a more R&B focused trio. This is not to say that he wasn't great with the Posies, or that he wasn't perhaps more consistent with the Posies. But I find myself revisiting his live solo bootlegs a lot more often than his Big Star-mach II shows, probably because I like the wider variety of material in the solo shows, the material that he enjoyed playing more as a middle aged guy who was following the "play it all" New Orleans philosophy of Snooks Eaglin, James Booker, and Wolfman Washington.
