These r&b/soul covers by an older, wiser Alex (with big help from Ron and Richard!) are so, so precious - I could listen to his falsetto all day long

also fantastic backing vocals by bass player as well as very slick playing by he and Alex. and this drummer kills it on what is not an easy song to nail.

This is outstanding. The audio quality is worthy of a commercial release. The band is in great form, and Alex is at his best. Thanks for this!

I discovered Alex too late, We were both born and raised in the Big M, he in ‘50, me in ‘60. I remember about age 16 going through a friends extensive album collection and pulling out Big Star’s #1 Record and asking about it, and friend said it was a great album, local band, but first you gotta hear this, and he put on a Rush album. I never heard Big Star until the KZbin age. At least there are performances preserved here for the ages. I’m blown away by his guitar playing. Is he technically brilliant? No, but as John Auer said, he’s eclectically brilliant. When you hear a few bars of Chilton on that old Gibson, you know exactly who you’re listening to. Damn. It’s 2020 and he’s 10 years gone. I envy anyone who ever got to see him live.

Born and raised in Memphis also I knew Big Star and all of the great artists from that city..Alex,s story is just plain sad what a great musician

I saw him when he toured Australia I think with this line up. The crowd only wanted to hear Big Star tunes...I think he went over my head a bit, he mainly played covers...but now I get it! He was an incredible artist, and what a voice...

@ArthurKuntsler, good stuff. If you were into the SF club circuit, did you ever catch the North Mississippi Allstars? Another Memphis area band. They’ve got a 2014 show from The Independent that looked like a lot of fun.

Well...live performances most definitely were. It;'s so stupid on every level. First of all, you'll never watch the shitty recording, and FOR SURE no one else wants to see it. And- most egregiously, you've fucking missed a once in a lifetime experience by worrying about your phone instead of being in the moment.
@austin789934 жыл бұрын
I mean they allow us to see essentially what you're clearly enjoying watching here on KZbin. How is whatever this was filmed on any different than a phone?
@johnthomas50254 жыл бұрын
@@austin78993 It's more to do with the level of engagement between the audience and the performer. Never mind.
@mattguerra3 жыл бұрын
@@austin78993 i think in this instance the difference is there's one camera man, off to the side of the stage. with phones, it's not uncommon to see dozens of people in the audience holding their phone up during a show. i can acknowledge all the positive benefits that smartphones have brought to my life, and others'. but when i see footage from the time before phones, i feel a bit of nostalgia. life just seemed a bit less cluttered if you know what i mean.

@@dannymoulton4829 Please. If Alex Chilton were alive he'd tell you how cheesy this song is. It's Corny as fuck but that's what makes it so Chilton and so great. He recorded a lot of songs with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I think that's what the poster meant.
