Interesting that Portugal play Slovenia and achieve the same outcome as england bar victory on penalties. Serves as a nice marker for how intense the criticism of England is compared to other underperforming nations. Also maybe indicative of how little credit the lesser nations get.

Mbappe actually had a poor previous Euros and a poor World Cup. He sneaked in a hat trick in a losing final, and the poor performance was overlooked. The point that the commentating snippet was making is that Mbappe is not strong at receiving the ball at feet and taking people on and he should stop trying to. He needs space to chase a ball played in behind.

This isn’t true about Mbappé though. Mbappé has completed the 2nd most dribbles so far with the highest success rate. To claim that he has been too passive simply is NOT true. The issue with Mbappé is his clinicality in front of goal. Also, Belgium defended deep, so it’s unreasonable to Mbappé to make runs in behind, when there’s no space to run into.

@@tevildo45 there’s absolutely nobody in todays game that can hold a candle to the Diego’s, Messi’s, Zidane’s, Baggio’s, R9’s, there just isn’t. Football is too structured now, too drilled & tactical, it curbs any instinctiveness, and individual creativity, you can’t go rogue and express yourself, players are so scared to break rank these days and do anything off the cuff, to take the bull by the horns, all you’ve gotta do is learn to pass it ten yards and follow instructions these days. De Bruyne done one back heel the other day and it was all over social media with kids drooling over it like they’d never seen it before, Eric Cantona used to do about 3-4 every game, not out of vanity, but to take an entire midfield line out of the game, or to unlock a tight defence.

After such a promising start with all the goals, it has been an awful Euros. The best teams have underperformed (other than Spain). Most of the best players have underperformed. The pitches have been dire. Not as good as the last World Cup. Well done to Slovakia, Slovenia and Georgia as well as Austria and Switzerland for providing something good.
