We used to use Bicarb soda back when racing on the track and I am telling you if you get the dose wrong then you need to stay close to the toilet

Excellent Thanks! I was just asking about caffeine timing on your newest video when i found a link to this one with your answer. Thanks Again for good info & that AIS website is pure gold! Thanks

3-6mg/kg of caffeine is the standard recommendation for athletic performance, with the higher amounts for longer events as you say. However, this only works properly when the athlete has had NO caffeine for 4-5 days previous. It introduces a lot of nervous system fatigue so you need to have a 'taper' going into the dose, just like when you want fresh legs on race day. Most people absolutely CAN NOT handle this and are too addicted. It is so so worth it though if you have the discipline to cut it out for a short time.

Another good video. I think you need to clarify how to take on the nitrate shot. You say that you take the shot to get it down quickly but then later on you correctly say to get the full output you need to swill it around your mouth before swallowing. Apart from volume wise, there is no way to take the nitrate shot without having to swill it around your mouth for a while.

Great vid Jesse - do you think cyclists should consider taking creatine? Obviously it's a no brainer for track sprinters and power athletes, but for road races/crits I'm not sure if the water retention cancels out the anaerobic and neurological benefits
@nerocoaching3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Depends on how much climbing you'll be doing. Creatine would be good for flat crits, but the excess water weight you'll carry will make it ineffective if you're doing climbing races. Can expect ~1kg in water weight gain, need to figure out if thats worth it or not

Dowsett's "aggressive" nitrate loading strategy test failed in a big purple vomit way in the British TT Championship (which happened after his video was recorded but prior to posting on YT). Thanks for bicarb tips, time to investigate further ie test but hopefully not in the Dowsett way ;-)

If you use Baking Soda, mix it with Beef/Chicken Broth. I’ve been using it for years, and I’ve never had intestinal problems. I even add some onion powder in to the mix. I also use broth with Apple Cider Vinegar. Improves the taste drastically!

Don't have it with vinegar. This buffers the solution

Would l-citrulline have any simmilar benefits to beetroot / nitrates, as it pretty much does the same function? Don’t think there are many studies on this, but would love your thoughts on this. I ve heard l-citrulline works in a simillar way as ED drugs like cialis but idk

Isn't L-citrulline and malic acid much more potent supplements for nitrate loading then beet powder/juice? (I drink beet juice every day. I mix it with V8 or tomato juice. It tastes ok that way)
@nerocoaching3 жыл бұрын
There's not much research directly comparing the two, and a lot of the good research I've read is done on Beetroot. You can try L Citrulline and Beetroo separately, and try them together, see what works for you. Hard to say definitively which would be more effective

15:13 - This section misses out the BEST source IMO - rhubarb @ 247mg per 100g, second only to rocket lettuce @ 480. Tastes a million times better than anything else.

I wonder if Alex Dowsett is using the bicarb to help with the first 5 KMs of to buffer what is happening there so he can start off ' faster' before settling in to his lap schedule ?!!?
@nerocoaching3 жыл бұрын
Yeh that more intense effort would likely be more assisted by bicarb, but the gains not enough to shift the pacing strategy IMO. He would be using a flat or negative split, going out above target pace for the first 5 km would be a brutal way to do it!
