As a snooker fan ..i had the good fortune to meet Alex several times over the years including being sat next to him during a performance of his one man play in 2003 at the crucible studio ..it was a wonderful night Alex was friendly every single time I met him over the years I think apart from being truly gifted as a snooker player he was such an interesting man who remained very true to himself what a lovely moment when he kissed John virgo and Michaela tabb on the cheek before the frame ..I did see Alex after the snooker that night he came to the tables last with his usual newspaper under his arm and a drink in his hand to meet fans and sign some autographs ..snookers number one of all time ❤️

Heartbreaking to see Alex so ill just before he passed. He brought snooker into our living rooms in the 80s. Everybody from your little brother to your granny loved it. What a great break of 101 from Jimmy & what a gentleman he is for standing aside & giving Roy the final black ball, made his day & much more

We have Alex to thank for getting millions interested in snooker in the 70s. He’s the only reason I used to watch it. Also he inspired players like Jimmy and Ronnie. A legend that should be praised and thanked by all of the players for raising the games profile and making them so much money.

For Alex to play this was beyond remarkable, he had the courage of a lion. To pit him against Thorburn after their history and Greenball Gate was sadly ironic...I wonder how Thorburn felt? I'm sure bygones were bygones. The Hurricane will remain a legend, a man who defined snooker, who made thousands want to start playing, who took it from the smoky men only clubs to TV, where it was entertainment for the whole family. He was a showman to the end and this appearance was for his fans, whom he always felt beholding to to put on that show. And he knew this was his own goodbye to The Crucible. RIP Alex, you were simply beautiful. ❤🌪

Growing old is not the same as living. Reaching 100 years is useless when all you did was watch your health. Sacrificing health for a good experience definitely improves the QUALITY of your life. My body is not a temple, but a tool. It doesn't have to end up in a grave in perfect condition. On the contrary, when I die, I want my body and brains to be used and worn down to their maximum capacity, knowing that that will shorten my life by a couple (or more) of years.

Sad to see Alex in this state and struggling to lift the cue, who was once a strong vibrant character in his youth. There are three things that can destroy a man; women, drink and gambling. Poor old Alex, he certainly did all three. He lived his life the way he played his snooker. Fast, flamboyant and entertaining. RIP Alex. Snooker legend.

I saw him in his prime playing in the Greyhound in Kensington where they had 2 decent tables in the back room and a small snooker club of which I was a member. This was not a competition or advertised event and he arrived virtually unannounced as he came in with a small entourage and played a couple of frames. There might have been some snooker tournament at the Albert Hall maybe. It was unreal, he showboated and played the most impossible trick shots, I almost gave up the game from that hour or so, the whole Higgins thing dripped charisma, drama, menace and out of this world skill. The stories of his antics would fill many volumes but if you check out Oliver Reed’s biography there are some epic tales to read with disbelief and wonder. A tragic huge firework of a person that burned out far too soon, some might say that’s preferable to a smouldering taper that lives on.

Can you describe some stuff he did? I haven't seen anyone who draws the cue ball back from long distance, the way Alex does. To lunge the stick forward with little backstroke so viciously with his right leg back kicking like a mule, even frame by frame and capture all the detail in his delivery. He's the only one ive seen who can do it like that because he's the only freak from outerspace who can. The man is a UFO. THE BEST.

@@FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO what do you mean by draws the cue ball back do you mean draws the cue back
@FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO
@FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO 2 жыл бұрын
@@rebeccaryan3621 no, I meant draw the cue ball back or "screw back" depending on what side of the pond you're from. Alex has one particular technique that when the cue ball is close to the rail like 1 ft to 2 ft where you're forced to play a shallow jack up type angle, and Ronnie O'Sullivan solves this when often times clearing the colors he is usually one of two ways on the brown and one of them is when he is dead straight on the brown and if you watch them closely he does two warm up sequences in which he is taking the stick back and forth in a very deliberate fashion where he's looking for the down up move, where when he takes it back the tip rises up and that is his indicator that now he takes it all the way back and make sure he doesn't lift the hand up in the back which is very tempting oftentimes, but you can't in that position because your angle is slightly jacked up because of the rail in your way, so Ronnie plays a vertical timing sequence but it's all mechanical and as long as he doesn't take that hand up when the q reaches the end of the backstroke, now all he has to do is just relax and slowly accelerate knowing that you're just going to clip the bottom of that cue ball and do not expect anything more than a inch of follow through and that is the point of it all, because that shallow vertical angle that the rail forces you on doesn't allow the mechanics to get a big swing back and through the cue ball and that is just the way it is. The relative center of the cue ball changes and you have to ignore the slate itself and the relative center of the cue ball becomes higher now because you are looking at it higher from behind the cue ball. But Alex figured out something very different, he takes very little backstroke at all and at the same time lifts up and lunges forward and I caught it perfectly in one slow motion frame or you can see the stick bend slightly like a rainbow but of course very shallow, and as the stick straightens out, it is straightening out into the very near Miss cue limit of the bottom of the cue ball and that explains how he can get a lot of draw with this move and mechanics that is anti draw if you understand mechanics. This is how he solves the rail problem because out on the Open table he can take the stick back and deliver it very low as well but it's pretty sick how we figured that one out where everybody thinks that he's just kind of spaz lunging at the cue ball. I don't think there's anything that Alex Higgins does that's an accident. If the guy was just more consistent out on the Open table with regular pots, he would have been unbeatable, because when it comes to bounce and spin and Warp, an English billiards and playing safeties, wow he's a super genius how he can get the cue ball and object ball to go unnatural paths and not come and meet each other for a double kiss. I like Alex over anybody on the planet even now if it came down to one red and the rest of the colors remained and the score is tie. ...... Or if he had an eight-game lead and only needs one more game. There is no way Alex loses from there unlike some players I've seen. No...way.
