1982 I was at the Europa Hotel for a job interview. Standing at reception and this guy starts engaging me in conversation, how I was, being there for a first job and wishing me every success! He walks away... and a porter runs over to me and goes... “ That’s Rory Gallagher “ a beautiful talent and such a genuine nice guy! Rory RIP 🙏🏼

I knew a sound engineer who recorded Gallagher over many years and knew him well. Apart from that Gallagher was apparently a totally lovely guy the thing my friend most impressed upon me was that in all those years he never remembered him ever hitting a wrong note. Not once. And you know, there was a lot of string bending going on there. But always bent those strings exactly right. You never hear anybody who knew him say a word against Rory Gallagher. RIP.

One of the tiring things about the legend is how unlikely the question is. In a lifetime of interviews I've never heard an interviewer ask, "What's it like being the best guitarist?" Obviously stories concocted to boost the 2nd guitarist. A difference in this tale is that the question is "Who is the best guitarist?" Could still be a fabrication, but more believable.

The first rock concert I ever attended was in 1974. It was at Belfast's Ulster Hall and Rory Gallagher was the main act that evening. Because of the troubles, most of the big acts were too scared too play Belfast but Rory Gallagher never let that stuff stop him. I shit you not, the crowd reacted to him like a God and he didn't let them down. I will never forget that show.

Rory was revered in Belfast for his music and talent, especially as he was one of very few musicians that would play Belfast in those dark times. He was always “one of us” too. I’ll never forget the high level of amplification and the attack of his playing produced an acoustic “crack” off the hard surface walls of the Ulster Hall, wonderful!

@@Ndlanding I had the privilege of meeting Rory once at a gig I was playing in Cashel, County Tipperary. He was a very kind, soft-spoken man who praised my guitar playing and vocals, and told me to keep up the great work. Needless to say, I was completely and utterly awestruck! Rory was Ireland's first big rock star, but he never let it go to his head, not even for a second. He was a grand soul, and and one who's still dearly missed. I am a very, VERY big fan of 'Rory Gallagher' as well as 'Alex Lifeson'. I totally enjoyed this interview. Back in the 70's when I started digging Rory, I never saw him play on TV much less live. It wasn't until the internet and KZbin that I got to see my guitar hero in action. Hearing Alex speak of Rory and knowing him so well confirmed my impression of what a humble and soulful person/player Rory was. Back in the 70's Rory, along with Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore and Robin Trower influenced my decision to trade my Les Paul Deluxe for a Fender Strat that sold for less than half the price, even up. The Strat is still my main guitar nearly 50 years later.

No flash lifestyle, no mega tours, no gutter press headlines just a modest guy who was a guitar player with a talent that lives on. Anyone listening to Rory Gallagher cannot fail to be moved one way or the other by his mastery of the guitar. From the raucous "Shin Kicker" to the soulful "A Million Miles Away", his talent was natural and of a level that others envied and respected. You name a guitarist and more than likely he was influenced by Rory. Whether it was blues, rock or ballads, Rory Gallagher was respected for his talent and skills over all those styles of music. A collaboration with Jack Bruce on "Politician" is well worth watching on KZbin where he effortlessly plays rhythm and lead to Bruce's powerful bass lines.

Mr Gallagher played his rendition of the Steve Cropper and Eddie Floyd's Knock on Wood! I still have the original 45 from 1966. Most people don't know who he was, but I made a point to see him whenever I could. Same with Rush, minimum 6 times, I remember when Rush started headlining and didn't Mr Gallagher add keyboards in 1982? I would never come across this video if not for the passing of Mr. Peart. Legal history. I was never lucky to see Rory playing live because he never came to Brazil. My first contact with his music was with the album Taste Pop History Vol 2 and later with his album Live in Europe, which made me want to play guitar. Rory was my first teacher and idol and Allan Holdsworth and Jimi Hendrix my guitar gods.

Thank you Alex Lifeson, for quantifying that statement Jimmy Hendrix made regarding who he thought was the best guitar player exactly how I heard the story. Thank you of course for all of the years of dedication and inspiration. So great to hear about Rory one of the most underrated musicians in my mind. Phenomenal guitarist and of course wonderful human being.

I got to see Rory Gallagher. He was one of many that opened for Queen that was headlining in Germany 1978. The Germans were chanting his name all day. He was a great of a showman and of course guitarist. Seen Rush in 75 and again 77.

Clicked on this having the sudden realization that Alex’s pinch harmonic technique sounds exactly like Rory’s. Five minutes later, Alex is like “OMG his pinch harmonics!” Never made that connection before. Cool! What a couple of great guys.

I discovered the immense talent and style of Rory Gallagher in the mid 70s. Wore my hair around the same length, flannel shirt always on with the sleeves semi rolled up. Was always a fan. My first trip to Cobh, County Cork I walked into a bar, ordered my pint and when I went back to the bar, noticed a poster sized autographed picture of my hero above the bar next to another of Phil Lynnot. I was floored to find out he had occasionally drank there. Wow, just wow.

Great interview! I was so lucky to have seen Rory and his brilliant band mates in 74 while living in a small town in central Germany. I knew someone who got me backstage after the amazing show that went on for 2hrs and you would have thought Rory was playing for a VIP audience at the Royal Albert Hall and not a small college gymnasium in a small German town. But what I really wanted to mention was my take away from my brief encounter with the man was what a truly nice, and humble gentleman he was---and that has been reinforced a lot since then by a lot of Stars of the Rock world who also met him---to a man or woman they all say the same thing---what a nice man he was. Brian May has a very similar story about meeting Rory before he (Brian) was the famous Brian he is today.

This is the reason why Canadians were into his music so much and so soon. Back then, it wasn't unusual for bands or musicians like Rory to play a 10 date Canadian tour from coast to coast with no U.S. dates.

I remember seeing RG a handful of times being from Los Angeles and going to some shows because he was opening for bands I didn't care about. Like 'Cheap Trick' he was so DAMN good live it didn't matter what or where it was probably going to be a good night out.

Rory was 100% real without any pretense or an ego that would have made him distant from his audience. I first heard Rory in Taste and recall spending close to a year search through records stores for this one Taste album (I finally found it). I love Alex' stories about his friendship with him. Rory used a Telecaster for slide quite a bit. I was lucky enough to see Rory live back in the 70's when his band was still trio and he tore the place up.

Extremely entertaining interview, saw the gallman many times, best memory is of wandering round Lyon one Sunday with some mates looking for work on them bandage, one of the boys notices a poster stating that Rory was playing that night, fucking amazing ,still got the ticket , 35francs , 1982, those frog rockers know how to get down brother, what a memory, what a guitarists, what a vocalist, some bloke at work one day reading a paper says to me ,ay oghead your mates dead, informing me of Rory's in the building site manner to which I am well accustomed, rest of the day was a blur , jump out of the van at knocking off , straight in the boozer, a gut full then home to massive earphone session playing as many of my Rory album's before konkout, miss you Rory, but thanks mate, you the man , hoghead 06-19.

When I was 15 years old in 1975 I bought 'Stage Struck' not knowing a thing about Rory. I liked the cover and really liked the singing guitar players. The energy blew me away. Frank Marino made quite an impression on me as well. To this day I still cover Rory's songs 'Follow Me' and 'Shadow Play'. I just love him. Cheers from Canada.

I saw that Rory show in 1974 with Rush opening at Paramount Seattle. Rush was a snoozer and Rory came out and tore the walls down. I was lucky enough to see him open up for Blind Faith ( subbing for Free) and also in a small local bar. I feel very lucky, RIP.
