All downhill huh? Lol. Ovechkin started the season with back-to-back hat tricks and never fell further than 2nd place in the goal scoring race at any point. He led the nhl in goals for 143 days (96 consecutive), scoring 26 goals in the first half and adding 23 more in the second half en route to winning his SEVENTH Rocket Richard trophy, helping the Caps clinch their division for the 3rd year in a row and 7th time since entering the league. All that talk about Ovechkin not winning a Cup was bound to backfire. Look at his performance in the big games of these playoffs. Scores 2 goals in an elimination game vs Columbus, sets up the overtime winner to eliminate Pittsburgh, scores the winner in game 7 vs Tampa and scores a point in each game of the Stanley Cup finals breaking a franchise record for most goals scored in a single playoffs and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy to boot.

Ovechkin isn’t nearly as fast compared to when he was in his prime. He no longer dekes an entire team with mesmerizing dangles. He’s improved his shot to become even more lethal and is still an effective player at 33.

@@michaelfusmusic9447 He still dangles, and he plays a lot smarter now. Always in position, and always ready to shoot. Although Ovechkin in 2008 had better numbers, I believe the league has changed since then, making it harder to score and get good chances. Overall he is probably a more effective player now.

He was, yes. But think about it, in 2008 there were 8 40 goal scorers, and 4 players with 100 points. The league was different then, it was easier to score. Ovechkin still scores at a similar pace nowadays, even while other players dropped off. In 2015-2016 there were 3 40 goal scorers (Ovechkin had 50), and 1 player with 100 points. Ovechkin's adjusted stats in recent years are probably better than his stats in his early twenties.

What amazes me about him is that he has one of the worst hockey strides in the NHL top, he’s always caught on a breakaway and he doesn’t back check ever. But his shot is a rocket and his release is hard to time and he hits hard and frequently.
