Jack Slack should just pick a random regional event to do a video on with his usual level of detail and then in the last 2 five minutes quickly run through the Apex event, because they share about the same level of skill

I'm starting to suspect that the reason why Nicolau put every stat of his into being a fast footed, circling counterstriker is because he has the second weakest chin in the division next to Matt Schnell. Him and Perez were the only worthy note of this card, the rest was regional/meme-level nonsense ("Hey guys wanna see the two worst WMMA fighters in the same prelim? Wanna see the dumbest guy in 205 lose to the evil clone of Anthony Smith?")

I don't pay to watch so I will watch anyway. I don't know why you chose now to stop watching. As far as Apex slop goes lately, this card was actually not half bad, and played out as a decently fun night of fights. I'm not trying to run defense for the ufc in the slightest, but as a viewer I have been less entertained by PPVs many-a-time.

I don't think the skill issue with fighters in the heavier weight classes is just because of other more lucrative sports taking most the big athletes. I think it’s as much to do with the difficulty in progressing in ability when they are already likely among the best overall fighters in their respective gyms. As much shit as Jack and other writers like to dump on these weight classes the reality is that if weight classes were dropped, even the bottom barrel UFC heavy and light-heavyweights would beat the champs of lightweight and below. Lightweights generally have a huge pool of training partners and need to be very competitive to get near the top in their weight class. Yet these big guys can come into the same gym with half the experience and put in half the effort, and they will still win most sparring sessions. So unless they have enough talented and athletic big guys to train against their skill and conditioning development is going to be stunted because they really don't have to do that much to keep up with the little guys who represent the majority of most gyms. That’s why I really like Tom Aspinall’s training in that he bring in a lot of European heavyweights to train against. They may not be the most talented fighters themselves but I feel it pushes Tom to be better fighter than if he was just coasting against lightweights in most training sessions.
@justas4236 ай бұрын
From experience, yeah, the higher the weightclass, the less competition you have to deal with. It's also not helped by the fact that Heavyweights like Joe Louis and Ali who are still sized like normal people are being phased out by absolute units like Derrick Lewis, Tyson Fury, Ngannou etc. It's also not helped that light heavyweights and middleweights can't roid up to gain the requisite muscle mass to be heavyweights while still remaining athletic and long lasting, which is the biggest contributing factor to low skill heavyweights.
@darragho63586 ай бұрын
I mean first you need to think of percentages of the population which would if in shape naturally fit into the weight class. Next you need to consider out of those individuals the percentage with above average athletic talent for combat sports which should be the same for all weight classes. So the heavyweight is naturally going to be a lot smaller and therefore be a lot more talented. Next if you include how big bodied athletic individuals are coveted by certain other sports with a lot more money that too will have an effect So no it's not just that but it's a huge factor especially when you realise that a lot of American football players don't even start playing until highschool. I mean if you go back to the 60s when boxing was the premier sport for pay is it surprising that we have a crazy deep heavyweight division. Granted the weight minimum was smaller but still we have extremely talented individuals
@darragho63586 ай бұрын
I mean you're literally making the first piece of the argument these dudes make as to why heavyweight is bad and ignoring it and focusing on the second point they make as to why heavyweight is bad. It's an amalgamation of both. There's very little in the in fight shape 220+ category (wet) and the most athletically talented of them like chandler Jones go off to makes 15-20m a year in the NFL or something like that
@lebosshog6 ай бұрын
There are significantly less big guys that there are average sized guys across all populations, and within certain populations the proportion of actual heavyweight sized men is even smaller (in Asia, for example). Basically all sports skew towards demanding the biggest men. What this results in is there basically being no competition in Heavyweight MMA. The only requirement is being big enough and having a single skillset or athletic bone in your body. There is no requirement for improvement because regionally there is no talent pool, it's literally fat guys who could most optimistically be called "bar brawlers".
@jessepaiz63566 ай бұрын
They also are lesser athletes as any atheltic larger athlete in US and Europe can make more money playing basketball or in the US football. Compare that to lightweight and below where there are not really sports for those athletes to play.
