Re-watching some of his 1995-1996 matches, man Alex Wright was really good in the ring, and given more time and better booking (and less constant upheaval, creative control, and clashing egos from the top guys in WCW) I think he could have easily had a Hall of Fame worthy career. But he's one wrestler, I think, who probably would have gotten more opportunities if he'd been around about 10 years or so later. He was REALLY ahead of his time, but the Monday Night Wars era was so much about being loud and over the top, that I think that may have gotten in the way of where his strengths were: being an extremely gifted, agile, and athletic in-ring wrestler. I would have loved to have seen him wrestle someone like Cesaro, or peak-era AJ Styles. Even Tyler Black I think could have made a great match up for him.

I agree. He would've done a lot better if he has come around when the business was better. He was stuck with an awful gimmick. Work was incredible.

The "he can't defend himself" regarding the smelliest wrestler makes me believe it is likely Vader he's talking about, seeing as he's no longer among us. Vader was widely known for not washing his ring gear frequently and his mask in particular apparently smelled like something that had been left rotting in a New York sewer for a couple months. Austin once talked about it on his podcast, back when Vader was still among us, and Bruce Prichard, Arn Anderson, and Jerry Lawler have all confirmed the rumors as well over the years. It seems Das Wunderkind is a very polite guy who will not speak ill of the dead. He tries to stay positive about just about anyone, but seems especially reluctant to say anything bad about anyone who has passed on. Obviously it makes for less juicy gossip, but hey, give credit to Alex for being charitable to his former co-workers. He seems like a very nice and classy guy. I was a big fan of him as a kid, and I'd really like to see more of him in the shoot interview and convention circuit. I think there's been a bit of a re-appreciation of his work happening among the fans in recent years (maybe also due to Wrestling Bios putting the spotlight on him so frequently) and I think it's well deserved.
