I was at the Vampiro/Berlyn Match in Hamburg - WCW Millennium Tour. It really was like Alex said. By far the best Match of the Night. Berlyn won but the Crowd was cheering Vampiro and booing Alex. It was really strange considering that the German Wrestler who made it in the USA was beeing booed in his Homeland. After the Match Vampiro bowed down to the Crowd, because he was really overwhelmed how much "over" he was. Great Night, great Memories.

Not sure if you listen to Bruce Pritchard's podcast? He actually said in an older Q&A episode that WWF tried to sign Alex Wright multiple times and rated him very highly. But the impression was he got into a comfort zone as a midcarder in WCW. He was actually very unfortunate in WCW. When he first debuted management were very high on him. Plus Ric Flair was a big advocate. They actually had a few excellent television matches together in 1995 (a few are on KZbin). Unfortunately, when the NWO angle begun, management's focus shifted and he got lost in the shuffle. Such a shame as he had huge potential.

@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? They got way worse under Russo. That's a fact. I like Russo but alot of the stuff was sporadic. I think five main things killed WCW: 1. AOL/Time Warner Merger 2. NWO got old/convoluted 3. World Title was devalued by Russo and other guys on the booking committee 4. WWF's popularity was too much to overcome by 1999 5. Booking/Storylines too often made no sense before, during, and after Russo/Ferrara

I agree and would ad in a 6th element 6. Time Warner/AOL/Turner conglomeration made getting things done really time consuming HR, advertising, merchandising, ppv preparation etc was just handled by so many different divisions of that giant corporation it was insane That time they ran a $100k ad in (I think) USA today for a ppv that had already happened the previous Sunday is a great example The ppv were the advertising branch didn't give the ppv partner company the actual match listing for the event to advertise and sell ppv buys is another example Just wasting millions on non wrestling shit Buying airline tickets for every single one of the 160 wrestlers under contract for every Nitro/Thunder even though no more than 30 were going to be used on the broadcast The kiss demon, concerts, monster trucks, Master P and his crew, ICP Letting ppv run over the time limit so they had refund everyone's money who bought the ppv Just blowing money on stupid shit and letting ATM Eric spend it with very little oversight They really killed themselves for the most part

Russo's downfall was becoming onscreen character. The "new york bad guy" schtick was obsolete even back then. Russo in the back writing storylines never seen or heard wouldn't have been that bad. Hence his success in WWF
@zackvanhalen
@zackvanhalen 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrDust1981 I don't think it was his on screen persona. He was actually a really good talker. I just think many of the storylines and creative decisions were convoluted. There were too many references to scripts and planned finishes. It's like they threw it in your face that this is all scripted and pre-planned, yet they wanted people to believe it was real. I've been re-watching WCW 2000 for the first time in 22 years, and I actually think much of it was entertaining, but they went way too far breaking the 4th wall and over-the-top stupid storylines (dancing Tank Abbott with 3 Count, Judy Bagwell, David Arquette, etc).
@MrDust1981
@MrDust1981 2 жыл бұрын
@@zackvanhalen No doubt he had many duds, but remember there was no work ethic or structure in WCW. A bunch of unmotivated talent with guaranteed checks who went to work with a shitty mentality. There was a hunger in WWF performers to prove they could surpass the Ted Turner money machine and sure enough with Russo and McMahon they became a huge success. I think Russo is best suited for a wrestling-themed movie or wrestling drama series, because he wouldn't need to endure the political b.s. that comes with regular wrestling

The mention of the CWA (Catch Wrestling Association) makes me want to hear more about wrestling in Germany and, especially, Alex's father, British wrestler Steve Wright. I've seen a bit of footage of him and he was a tremendous wrestler. Typical British technical skill, good physique, very agile. 11:58 What Alex said here pretty much sums up my view on how WCW died off. Russo wasn’t THE reason why WCW died off but he surely contributed to it. Most old school WCW/NWA fans didn’t like the gimmicky WWF style to begin with, and when Russo brought that style to WCW it drove off a lot of the loyal holdover fans…

@@jayceegenocide4402 you’re right. Bischoff stated numerous times that the AOL/Time-Warner/Turner merger was the spark to that powdered keg, but as far as Russo goes I feel like the bad storylines and pseudo-Attitude Era stuff he put out made the die-hard fans who tried to stick it out decide to leave.

WCW actually did a wide consumer survey shortly before Russo was bought in. The overwhelming sentiment that emerged was that fans wanted a completely different, more serious and competitive product to the WWF in 1999. Russo and Ferrara completely disregarded this

Not surprisingly Alex Wright is... well... a really nice guy who hates to say something bad about other people. He was a legit pro. You could have dropped him in Memphis in the 70s and he would have done just fine. Just a really solid worker.

Well, judging by how well the booking committee was doing before Russo, I'd say that what they doing wasn't working for WCW. There's a reason Russo was brought in.

He’s just a normal guy with nothing to sell is probably why. I think 90% of the heat wrestlers talk about on podcasts is just exaggerated or made up to stay on the convention circuit because that is how they earn a living. No one wants to hear stories of how we all got along and drank beers together all day.
