I was addressing the show 13 reasons why, and the characters of Zach and Alex - the reference to Europe being 20-30 years ahead of the US in regard to gay inclusion was not the main focus of what I wrote. But if you look at the facts, both that the birth of the gay liberation movement in the US began with Stonewall in New York 1969 - 21 years after my own country had seen the birth of the gay liberation organisation Forbundet av 1948, founded in 1948, the fact the European countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden were the first three countries in the world to recognize registered partnership between same sex couples, that EU laws offer better protection and grant more rights to gays, lesbian and transgender people than US laws and legal practice, I rest my case for my claim that the US is 20-30 years behind Europe in regard to gay rights, gay representation, gay visibility in media and similar. As I understand it the US got it's first gay member in congress last november. The first gay members of parliament in my country Norway are either dead or retired. And retired is also the gay man who a decade or two ago was the mayor of the capital Oslo. At the moment our minister for health is openly gay and married to a man. So has a former minister of finance been, a former minister of justice was a lesbian (she is also an internatinally famous novelist, former news presenter and also a lawyer), likewise a former minister of education was also a lesbian - in fact there are and have been so many gay politicians, ministers and similar the media don't bother mentioning it anymore. How many openly gay or lesbian members of congress did the US have in 1971, when Norway got it's first openly lesbian member of Stortinget (parliament)? And in how many US states could same sex couples officially tie the knot in 1992? That is 27 years ago. Do you still maintain the US is not 20-30 years behind Europe in regard to gay rights, gay representation and gay visibility in society?
