@@smithleon Thanks for the quick reply! So you can use a motion sensor as a trigger to turn the light on, superb! Can you also use the switch as a trigger using Alexa routines? @smithleon4 жыл бұрын
@@n-flem222 You can't use the switch on/off as a trigger in an Alexa routine, but you CAN use it as a trigger in the Smart life app, so I have a little automation in that which turns on a 2nd light in the garage if the first one is activated. Basically there is a light at each end so an automation switches on the 'other' one depending on which one is pressed...or both of them via the motion sensor. Alexa routines are good and I use them a lot but the triggers are a bit limiting I think. Hopefully that will improve.

I replaced the dumb switch with the simpler connection by adding the common to the Neutral whole and L1 & L2 to L and L1 in the smart. The issue is that the other dumb switch doesn’t operate the lights anymore. Any ideas why? Maybe because I connected the N to the common?...
@akastewart4 жыл бұрын
I bought and installed both a 1-gang and a 2-gang of these a few months ago, both MOES brand. The 1-gang is unstable at times, with the associated lights switching on seemingly randomly at least a couple of times each day. The 2-gang stops working completely - voice, app or manually - within a few manual uses after setup. (If I use only the app/Alexa, it seems fine, but as soon as I start using it manually, the whole things fails and I need to reset it.) I'm still using the 1-gang, mostly via voice, but I've unset the 2-gang and am using it manually for now. I've not installed the capacitor in either, but will give that a go - even though the symptoms it supposedly helps with aren't those I seem to be having. As a side-note, having the flat, glass-fronted switches aren't so great. So often, I reach out to the turn a light on/off as I enter/exit a room without actually looking at the switch, feeling for the switch itself as I pass. (I imagine that is quite common, even though we don't really think about it.) With flat, glass-fronted switches, it's hit n miss lining up my finger with the small 'hit area' for each switch. Even when looking at it, it's seemingly easy to 'miss' the switch. They might look slick, but I think they're impractical. All in all, I'm pretty unimpressed and couldn't honestly recommend them.

My concern for these switches that do not require neutral is that they need capacitors. And that still need a qualified electrician to install. So my choice would still be neutral-wired switch. Not to mention that my other light switches are z-wave enabled so it'd be nice to include this switch to my z-wave network. I'm using the MCO Home switch btw.
@RichPyke4 жыл бұрын
Couple of problems with these switches... 1. They require the capacitor on the fitting which is not always easy to do. 2. The switches are cheaply made. I had two, neither worked and both fell apart. 3. If you have 2 way switching these become incredibly difficult to wire in. Better off using smart bulbs sometimes.

@rhysferris19964 жыл бұрын
Paul, I am not complaining nor arguring with you but as you like to spead information I thought I should update you on you Nutral wire situation. If you light switch does not have a nutral wire and insted has to Live/Line wires it is on a 3 plate system, which in simple tearms means the power is supplied to the light in the Loop termianl, then down to the switch, back up to the light and actually through the light then down the nutral wire. It is posible to get dimmers to dim a 3 plate system as a dimmer switch in limiting the electrical current to the load. Smart sitches are currently using Relays wich are electromagnetic switchs, an autimated dimmer would be rather large and i am sure that currenly their are companies that are trying to solve this problem and srink this technology. hope this helps. I would also suggest that you recommend people to get an electrician to install electrical items despite it being legal to do so themsleves. people installing electrical fixtures incorrectly can cause sparks, heat, fire and death. the wires do not only have to be installed into the correct terminal but also inulation must be cut back to the correct lenght and termianls properly weighed down on to prevent fires. I understand the DIY aspect of your videos but when it somes to the risk of lives, people should be encouraged to use a professional rather than chance it. Again, I am not calling you a D*** or getting angry at you, simply providing some friendly feedback. Hope this helps and keep up the good work

There are some ZigBee smartdimmers that do not need a Neutral available in the U.K. from Aurora lighting, who are a well regarded & established manufacturer. Their AOne series of smart products includes a novel rotary dimmer that works very intuitively, just like old style analogue dimmers so very easy for home occupiers to use. Available with a clean looking white plastic faceplate in single or dual gang versions. Also available as a compact module that can be single hole fixed to a custom faceplate of any size or finish. The smartdimmer has a switched selection of operating as a Master or as a Slave for multilocation switching through existing wiring. Being standard ZigBee means they are officially supported by Samsung Smartthings Hub as well as their own hub, but recently Aurora have announced official integration with the built in hub of Echo Show g2, Echo Plus or Echo Studio is coming soon. They act as ZigBee repeaters. They dim very well and go down to 1% with compatible LED bulbs. They have a power rating of 250W. Price wise the AOne products are midrange, ie lower than LightwaveRF but greater than Energenie MiHome or budget WIFi products. A single gang AOne rotary smart dimmer is just under £50 but easy to install as no load bypass device is needed. Recommended.

If you only have a Live and Switch Live Wire at the light switch box then you just disregard the Neutral Terminal and terminate the Live Wire to the "L" Terminal and the Switch Live Wire to the "L1" Terminal and you must install the Capacitor at the ceiling rose to stop the light from flickering/buzzing

I'm not convinced they've got all the problems solved. I'm also not 100% sure, but I think you need a Broadlink RM pro to control it too . I stopped recommending it a while ago after all the difficulties.

It's also not a dimmer switch, just to make that absolutely clear. They're on/off only.

How do you set up a two gang switch with the app and alexa I've set up the single switch but just interested in how a double light switch would pair up I take it you would press and hold the first button and pair that then do the same on the other have I got this right cheers inadvance

Brilliant as always Paul. Have a question - not sure if you can answer. As the 2/3 way versions are available, and as the switch doesn't require a neutral, would pressing buttons 2 and 3 trigger and IFTTT even though they've got no power to them? Is providing power to circuit 1 enough? E.g. I'd like to replace a standard 1 way switch with a 3 way version, where I could use buttons 2 and 3 to trigger WiFi table lamps for example through IFTTT even though there's no load connected to circuits 2 and 3.... Wonder if anyone knows this?

Get the other version that requires it. In the uk most light switches are only on the positive cable. Hence why we need no neutral.

These switches are great for three-way, four-day etc smart setups. You wire one to actually switch the power on-off, and in the other locations, just power the switch and use the automation to on-off the "real" switch. I have given up on the single gang ones, buy 2-3-4 gang models and you can control many devices from one spot. This is where my Brother p-touch labeller has come in handy.

Hi Paul, Have you had a look at LightwaveRF products? I've installed a few of their dimmer switches found them very good but pricey. They also do sockets too. All controlled from a phone app through a hub and the woman/man in a box.

Is it also possible to use it only as the ifttt trigger and not switch any power lines at all? so for example there is 1 switch in the wall, that would normally turn one light on or off, but I want to have constant power on the celeing to have like 1rbg strip on its own and the normal light that will be triggered through ifttt 🤔

Lutron Caseta dimmer switch doesn’t use a neutral wire. I own a few of them. Easy install and set up. Flawless performance so far. They are pricey though, but the complete lack of fuss has been wonderful. Oh...works with Alexa, Google and HomeKit so your options are wide open.

In theory could you have this switch wired up to a standard plug. Then you could use it as a smart button to, for example turn a smart bulb on or start a routine?

Hi. Im new to this home automation and not really technical. I got a couple if rooms with hue lights (seems like your not a fan hehe) wired up normally to a standard switch but as you know most guests just use the manual switch causing the power to cut off from the light making it useless through the app as you need to manually put it back on. Will these switches solve this problem? If your internet is down but still have a wifi signal, will the switches work or will you loose all control over the bulbs till internet is back on? Can these work 2/3 way as i got some bulbs that can be powered on/off from different locations?Was also looking at the livilo switches but was not sure if these will work too. Thanks

Maybe, MAYBE, not switching the light directly but switching a relay (mechanical or solid state) might stop the buzzing issue. Clunky but possible.

Is there any light switches that use Alexa that don't need the internet? I guess its impossible due to using Alexa but the reliability, here in Australia, is total shite. One day it works then it doesn't. Of course we have a local sourced article that is made in Melbourne but they no longer have support for Apple, which doesn't bother me as I use Android, but I can see that maybe I am about 5 years too early, here in OZ, for this system to be reliable. Is there a system that you could create a local cloud that is accessible via the net so you have remote control but while in the house it doesn't have to worry about all the connections that are required to use Alexa that needs to go through all the sites just to turn a switch off and on. Sometimes its quicker and more reliable to just use the switch than give a command that may work. Unfortunately all the Amazon links wont deliver to Oz and they are not available through the Oz Amazon site.
@gregorhi24 жыл бұрын
How about an overly complicated dimmer setup? Get something like a Shelby Dimmer and wire it directly into the lamp. Then use your two switches in the light switch as automation triggers, i.e. left switch to lower the brightness and right switch to increase the brightness. Wifi switches don't need to be actually wired to what they can control as your moon is demonstrating.
@javandermerwe3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, could you perhaps look at doing a review of the SwitchBee system? I kitted out my entire house with it. Interestingly, I chose them specifically because the switches don’t require a neutral and do allow for dimming. Happy to share my experiences after a year or two of use, since I’ve learnt a lot. Thanks!

Does anyone know a certification or course (low cost) that will qualify you to work on other people's switches and fittings, without becoming a fully fledged sparky?

You need City & Guilds 2391 certificate in electrical inspection and testing. Part P is in building regs not a qualification as such

OR learn about PoE lighting and run everything over ethernet lines that dont require special licensing. Cat6 lines easier, safer, and cheaper than conventional electric lines. The tech is being developed to push a ridiculous numbers like 90V through those same lines. PoE is a newly expanding field that will transform how houses are built going forward. A good chnnel for PoE stuff is PoE Texas.

@@haywoodjablome440It's great stuff, but all I'm thinking of doing is installing smart bathroom and kitchen lights, where it takes more than just changing a bulb. I really don't understand why nobody has created a battery-powered smart light switch yet. It wouldn't help with dimming, but for basic on/off a switch-activated relay that looked like a light switch would solve the issue of needing a neutral, and it shouldn't draw too much power either. I've got 15 downlighters in my kitchen, and at present I'd need to replace every bulb with a smart bulb to be able to turn them on and off using Alexa. This is expensive, and I'd much rather be able to just replace the switch.
@LindsaySmithmollison4 жыл бұрын
Great Video. My biggest gripe about my smart lights is the kids keep turning them off with our analogue switches. If I replace them will this allow my LIFX lights to be used regardless of the switches state or will I need to use IFTTT to state if light is off then switch on ?
