To all, Everyone has an opinion on Bustamante. Hero is not set in stone, its opinion based there are those who agree and those who don't, both arguments have merit so long as they are argued with facts and intelligence, so I ask as Jamaicans and Black people please have respect for each others opinion even if you don't agree that way we can have an intelligent debate Bustamante was like most a complex man with many contradiction just like all humans, we judge people on what they do, not their character and faults.

The Caribbean islands were seeking a solution after independence....the best solution was a United Caribbean Federation to defend the Caribbean African heritage and culture...but Bustamante aroused the new Jamaican nation towards western nationalism... the rest is history... Jamaican economy has collapsed ...no strong links with other islands... compound corruption... and disunity... cheers Bustamante! 🙄

I think it is important that people have some knowledge of Bustamante, from comments of most is at best ill-informed at worst ignorant. It is true that he demanded the head of the Rasta's in 1963, but that was after the death of the policeman of which he was one of the pall bearers at his funeral, he was not part of the systematic oppression of the Rasta. You have to remember that most of Jamaican society did look down on Rasta, Bustamante was part of that not the cause. As far as I am concerned he is definitely a national hero, having read about him and listen to people who knew him (my dad), he was a man of the people who was very much aware of racism and bigotry of the British during colonial days, who can forget when he was prime minister when one of his minister was racially abused by a bigoted Texan he was summarily deported from Jamaica, this was a year or two after independence. All I asked that we really find as much as we can about him before we judge him

Yes definately good to inform yourself First. Thats Something you should also do because it wasnt a Rastaman who Had commited that crime. And He did Go hard against all rastafarians and Titelize them. It doesnt matter If Others didnt think highly of Rastafarians He as a so called Leader should have differenciated. He was a typical politition as unfortunately alot of what is Seen in Jamaica who is in it for themselves. I am Not proud of him and definately do Not See him being a National Hero of Jamaica.

You're spreading propaganda, Bustamante is no hero; he's been the mouthpiece for the colonial and imperialist movements ; spent time as henchman for the fascist Franco in Spain ; an opportunist who promoted illiteracy for Jamaicans. He's a disgrace to the National movement for redemption of a nation that is still under colonialism. So we'll soon have Seaga and Holness as heroes also? Bob Marley and Michael Manley is more hero material than this imposter. Get it?
@brianmuhammad4988

@@nattyphillips9792 Sir if you going to criticise me, may i suggest you get some historical knowledge. He was not Franco henchman. Franco rise was during the Spanish civil war in the 1930s. The time Bustamante was in Spain the country was a constitutional monarchy. Where in my piece did i say he was a hero? I seriously don't think you have read what i wrote. My father was involved in Jamaica politics (grassroot level) in the 1940s and he knew both Bustamante and Norman Manly and he spoke very highly of both, so who am i to question that from someone who was there? @@ivorswaby9491 Jamaica needs to ditch the slave mentality. The vast majority of Jamaicans are dark people but they say negative things about themselves. They will describe "high colour" people as having good hair and good complexion and coming from good families. They will have sayings like "anything too black no good" I myself have very little African blood and am mostly composed,if I can use the term composed,of Northern European blood but even though, quite ironically, I have trouble passing for black I regard myself as a black man because if you have any sub Saharan African blood you aren't white. So speaking as a man much fairer than Bustemante I urge all black people to ditch colourism. It's just a device to devide black people and the lovers are dark people. Listen to the words of Melcombe X and be proud of what you look like and don't describe people who look like me as "good".
