Same here. I was looking for a violin concerto to learn and his Violin Concerto in A minor popped up on KZbin about 3 years ago and after a while I started getting into his other compositions. It's beyond words!!!

When Russian composers considered oriental music, they thought of the newly annexed parts of Russia in central Asia and Caucasian people who were a mixture of Iranic and Turkic tribes. Thus such music reflects the ethnic music of the area which were of course played with local instruments and at different keys and scales. The adoption to Western classical scales and orchestra was quite an elaborate effort epitomized with works such as Sheherezade of Rimsky-Korsakov. This work of Glazunov is another outstanding example. It starts out with a dreamlike melody sounding similar to Sheherzade but at 4:48, it immediately switches to a fast Tukic rythm and melody straight out of the streets of Azerbaijan. Being a genius of a composer, Glazunov even uses Oboe and Clarinet that sound similar to local village wind instruments popular in rustic parts of former Persia and current Iran. The mixture of Russian, Persian, Turkic music makes this work a fabulous menagerie of the music of cultures that were brought under Russian empire.

Even more authentic (to me, at least) is the third movement of the Suite for String Quartet Op 35. When I first heard it a couple of years ago, I had to keep playing it over and over again!

Abe Shahrodi. Quite the most interesting and informative posting I've seen on KZbin for some time.
@abe_485 жыл бұрын
@@maxmerry8470 Yes, with some loss of connecting notes, early parts of the String Quartet's third movement resembles slow Persian songs which usually bear mystic poetry, nostalgic love or ethos of death comparable to an Elegy in Western classical. Such perpetual mournful pathos were a legacy of enormous loss of lives after periods of Arabic, Mongol and other foreign invasions.

An amazing work by Al. K. Glazunov deserves all these fine comments. Although, it's more than obvious that N. R. Korsakov, who was his teacher & mentor, had a deep stylistic impact on his music. His masterpiece, the ballet "Raymonda" is full of this oriental allure.

His 4th symphony is one of my favorites. Underrated and ignored by many but one of my favorite composers. Reminds me a bit of Kalinnikov who came after him.

Russian Classical composers have produced a treasure trove of gems quite different from the works of other musical traditions. Their proximity to Asia helped create their unique contributions from Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Stravinsky, to Prokofiev, Miaskovsky, Glazunov, and Khachaturian.I usually prefer Russian artists and recording to those made in the West.
@paullewis24132 жыл бұрын
There’s no doubt that Russia has produced many remarkable composers. Personally I find Glazunov a very uneven composer, however Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev are among my top 10 favourites World wide.

Magnifique !!

Great piece of music! But. Svetlanov's recording is much clearer, and more emotional. With Fedoseyev all the instruments are jumbled and have no individual voice.

Nice, but not very original......(Night on Bald Mountan. Scheherezade)
@tonylogan40924 жыл бұрын
There is a lot to be said for 'nice' though... I wish more composers wrote music that is nice, but certainly a Turkish sound to classical music is original, too, and was so for Russian audiences when this piece was written.
@bgccallahan41163 жыл бұрын
Makes me wonder...what does "original" mean? One could argue that many of Mozart's and Haydn's symphonies and chamber works were "unoriginal". What exactly is the litmus test for the comparison of melodies, harmonies, polyphonies? These works re representative of rather different cultures. Utilizing more variable tomns, scales. Drawing upon music of folk culture that 18th century masters were not highly aware of. Thoughts?
