Historians do not know whether Hamilton was born in 1755 or 1757. Coincidentally, I am currently early in my reading of Ron Chernow's biography, which inspired the musical. Chernow used the 1755 date based on what he thought was the preponderance of evidence, and he supposed Hamilton used the 1757 date when he entered college so he would be thought closer in age to his fellow students. (At the end, Simon said Hamilton was 49 when he died in 1804, which is based on a 1755 birth date.)
@BurrShotHam711Jenna3 жыл бұрын
Lin-Manuel Miranda used 1757 for the musical since there are 47 tracks in the live version and 46 on the cast album (Lin cut the Laurens Interlude because he wanted to save something for the show)

Actually Aaron Burr did not try to take the presidency from Jefferson in 1800. Many Federalists in Congress voted for Burr instead of Jefferson but Burr made no moves to encourage them. So I suppose we do know who tells your story, Simon Whistler. The lives of the American Founding Fathers were genuinely fascinating, in my opinion. I can see why Lin Manuel-Miranda found Hamilton especially to be interesting. Man grew out of poverty, fought in a war, established a national career, fought with Congress and Thomas Jefferson to the last breathe like he was Jimmy Stewart, was the centre of the first major political sex scandal, had a son killed in duel, and then died in a duel himself tragically young in a move that ended both involved men’s political career. Aaron Burr because because he killed a guy who was kinda popular over a really petty matter and Hamilton because… he was dead. I find it interesting to see who gets more well remembered by history, as I don’t think either Aaron Burr or Alexander Hamilton are really that well known, or at least as well known as men like Thomas Jefferson or George Washington. History is written by the winners after all. Also, I’m surprised at how long people of that era could live, Eliza Hamilton lived to be 97! I have the honour to be your obedient servant.

The Republican Party? The GOP is against big government and Hamilton and the federalists were clearly for it. They sound more like democrats
@jamellfoster60293 жыл бұрын
@@Chantal-612 look it up. The Federalists gave way to the Whigs who gave way to the Republicans in the 19th Century... The Republican Party still favors a strong banking system (look how well the economy fairs when we have a Republican President, VP, & Cabinet)...
@johnweber45772 жыл бұрын
@@Chantal-612 The associations were reversed at the time of the Founding. Classical Conservatives like Hamilton believed that a strong government was essential to preserving order while Classical Liberals like Jefferson saw it as an oppressive tool of the elite. It wasn’t until the conditions established by the Second Industrial Revolution settled in that you saw the mainstream Right and Left start to shift on how they viewed the role of government going forward.

Aaron Burr was such a contemptible man in his lifetime, he shouldn't even warrant a video. If he gets one, it should be to showcase how much of a villain he really was.
@Sorcerers_Apprentice3 жыл бұрын
Hamilton got the last laugh over Burr, his career and reputation were in the toilet after the duel. He lost all his money in a bunch of bad land deals and when his wife divorced him, her lawyer was Hamilton's son, Alexander Hamilton Jr. He died penniless in a boarding house.

Burr had a fascinating life. Just after the Revolution, he and Hamilton worked together on a legal case. They were both founding members of the NY Manumussion Society, planning the gradual end of slavery in their state Years later, Burr was accused of a treasonous plot to foment rebellion in the West. He was not convicted. Partly because his accuser was General James Wilkinson, widely considered untrustworthy. Long after his death, it was shown he had been in the pay of the Spanish government for msny years. Burr was a mixed character. Wilkinson was a snake

whatever his personal shortcomings (and every founder did have them) there are few whom could compete with his intellect or his ability to put pen to paper and effect change. im glad that the play shone a light on him again. they had talked of removing the man responsible for our financial system off of the bill his face adorns and that would also have been tragic.

Any chance of a Biographics Video about the Newburgh Conspiracy from Dec 1782-March 1783? Alex Hamilton was hot and heavily involved in it and historian Richard Kohn said this was the closest the US ever came to a military coup de etat. It is a controversial subject but George Washington set many people straight with a dramatic speech in Newburgh NY confirming civilian control of the US military.

Yes! I’d love to see some Canadian content in here, maybe some Tommy Douglas, Mary Pickford, E Pauline Johnson, a return to the early series of wrestling biographics with Brett Hart/the Hart Foundation? Roberta Bondar and Chris Hadfield would be amazing! Louis Riel or Laura Secord for some early days of the founding of the nation? The story of Evangeline and the Acadians would be interesting too … Evangeline is fiction, but the Expulsion of the Acadians most definitely is not … maybe this would be better for a different Simon channel 😛

I think this is the most consequential part of American history, and should be comprehensively taught in American history courses. The decision between having a state bank or private bank is such a defining thing for a nations sovereignty. It needs to be taught more in schools. The difficulty in the decision is that while a state run bank makes a government potentially more corrupt, a privately run bank makes the government more vulnerable to foreign influence, which is the root of communism.
