The British are mad at the Americans because of the high debts fighting the French So the British decided to fight the Americans, and the French assisted the Americans and helped them beat the British Assisting the Americans led to high debts for the French and sparked the French Revolution the British tried to defeat the French during this time especially later when Napoleon was Emperor, and this rose to their debts simply put, Britain tries to solve debt problems with even more debt

The idea that the US War of Independence caused the French Revolution, often though people from the US may repeat it, is a load of utter bollocks. It may have had a cursory influence, but it certainly wasn't the cause.

Actually, it should be noted that the Americans understood the necessity of paying the taxes after the Seven Years' War, the problem that became a big issue was that Parliament did not allow the American Colonies to impose the taxes themselves to solve the problem, instead you just had a Parliament basically say: "Nope, you don't get a say in how much you should pay in the taxes." Translation: taxation without representation, which created the famous war cry, "No taxation without representation."
@artofthepossible73295 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, for the Americans (and the British that supported the Americans) rotten boroughs existed and makes me wonder how they thought an colony nation (which would be of inferior priority to Parliament) would have representation.
@Longlius5 жыл бұрын
@@artofthepossible7329 The answer is that the Americans knew that representation in Parliament was a non-starter (they even said as much in their official correspondence with the king). What upset them more than anything is that they had enjoyed more than 150 years of mostly just getting to rule themselves. Even prior to the Seven Years War, Britain had begun to increasingly impose its will over the day-to-day affairs of the colonies (much to the chagrin of colonial bigwigs). The peaceful solution proposed by most of the colonies was a form of devolved self-rule but with the colonies paying Britain in order to maintain imperial association ("We write most of our own laws, but we still get to be British and we'll pay you for the privilege.") Despite this sounding like a good idea, the British were not keen on it, because "American self-rule" was usually synonymous with smuggling and violating Britain's mercantilist trade policies to trade with the other European empires (aka Britain's rivals). And so this is how you get the American War of Independence - the interests of the colonies and the interests of Britain could not be cleanly reconciled, and so war breaks out. The rest is history. Yale actually has video lectures posted for their HIST 116 course (The American Revolution), which I would recommend checking out. The third lecture (Being a British American) does a lot to really get you into the mindset of early Americans and why things evolved the way they did.

So here's a story: my family has more or less lived around southern Ontario forever, so to my suprise it turns out that they used to live in Boston, but had to leave, know why? This happened.
@rjfaber19917 жыл бұрын
That's not particularly unique... The entire reason Ontario exists in the first place, and isn't just part of Quebec, is because of the settlement of the United Empire Loyalists.
@TJStellmach7 жыл бұрын
Some British Loyalists at the time of the revolution (not the majority, buy still, thousands of them) emigrated to the Canadian colonies. Mostly they went to the maritime area, though. Ontario was rather a remote frontier at the time.

Yeah, the bulk of the Loyalists arrived in Ontario and Quebec in the year after the Revolution was over (1784). During the Revolutionary War, the Maritimes were much more settled than Upper Canada. But a handful of Ontario and Quebec towns were still founded with loyalist influxes from the start of the war in 1776. It was basically just Windsor, Prescott, and Niagara Falls.

You're in luck! The patreons voted for him last weekend, and he'll be getting a series in fall of 2017. That said, there are lots of amazing stories from all around the world that deserve to be covered on Extra History - as just one example, we haven't yet discussed the history of the Indian subcontinent at all. History is rich and varied, and we're excited to cover as much of it as we can, so the absence of one particular person, region, or event is not a snub but a reflection of how wide the range of wonderful world history there is to discuss.

Von. His name was Von Bismarck, and the adjective "von", despite just meaning "of", was an important indicator of nobility in the Germanies at the time. When people were ennobled, they'd have "von" added to their names, so that the great industrialist Ernst Siemens, for instance, became Ernst Von Siemens after his ennoblement. Calling Otto Von Bismarck simply Otto Bismarck would likely have made him a bit upset...

The way I see it, the whole issue of state's rights vs national rights is one of the central conflicts throughout all of American history, even today, and is directly related to the whole debacle that was the Articles. It comes up several times in this very episode, with the various states repeatedly insisting that they'll be fine on their own and don't need an overseeing body to shackle them. I expect this issue will come up several more times before this series is over.

By the same logic the men of the British parliament were also probably "good, well learned men who had different political ideas".The only difference is their country lost the war. "We don't really know them, and the only evidence we have of their greatness is the fact that they consumed insane amounts of alcohol the day before they wrote the constitution. " The US too? It's thought PEI joined Canadian confederation because MacDonald got everyone super drunk before the signing and promised them a railroad. PS Canadian confederation was also a rediscovery of a long-standing goal of a nobody independent MP who ended up in the gov't because MacDonald needed him to hold onto a majority. I almost think it is a real pattern that the talents you need to get the power to implement great ideas are incompatible with the talents you need to come up with great ideas.

I wanted to add that yes the British did incur large debts by fighting the french. What isn't told though is that the colonists spent large sums of money also, the British promised to pay them back and never did instead raising taxes. That's why they refused the taxes because they had felt cheated. Check Ben Franklins address to parliament for the American perspective on it. This video was mostly accurate but focused a lot on how the British viewed the American revolution, and less on why the Americans did these things. This video gives the impressions that the people who were not loyalists were just radicalists that didn't listen to reason.

Especially after the Seven Year's War when the land colonists had just fought for was now illegal to settle on with the Proclamation of 1763, which the colonies politely ignored.
@MrMarinus186 жыл бұрын
Well they couldn't pay back taxes because they had no money. Also the money spend was in the form of loans to the government since legally the Americans were British citizens. Many people in the British isles had given loans to the government as well during the war and why should the Americans have priority for loan repayments? The British government just repayed loans in order of the height of the interest rate. A bigger reason why the Americans felt cheated was because they had given those loans based on the idea that the land the British would win would let them expand westwards. However after the war the British didn't allow it so since they weren't given the land they believed they invested in they wanted their money back immediately. If anything the possibilities for colonization after the war were even more restricted than before the war.

next to the federation of Australia. there's some interesting stuff like how if New Zealand or Fiji wanted to join Australia they don't have to need a constitutional amendment like if any other country joined because they were under new South Wales when it federated.

Two hundred years? Wow... I know you guys can't help that your country is so young, but I always like to joke that I live in a house that is older than the United States.
@HistoryNerd8087 жыл бұрын
Robert Faber Maybe so but even us being a relatively young country, our constitution is the oldest national constitution still being used, having been written in 1787(ratified the following year) which should at least count for something.
@rjfaber19917 жыл бұрын
+Michael Hill - True, and it does count for something, although maybe you shouldn't think too hard of where you would be if you had binned the current constitution for something better, just like you did with the Articles back in the day. You could be rid of that damned electoral college for a start...
@zyaicob7 жыл бұрын
LOL!! Our Declaration of Independence was written 125 years before theirs...
@wea11177 жыл бұрын
Michael Hill What it means is that the Constitution is a mess that doesn't account for any modern day scenarios. Not to mention that lawmaking today basically devolves into a debate about what the guys 200 years ago would want rather than what would actually be good for America.
@HistoryNerd8087 жыл бұрын
Robert Faber I actually support the Electoral College because it forces coalition-building and you have to pay attention to the issues of more than one part of the country(good example of this is that Clinton lost this last election in large part because she didn't pay attention to the issues of the Rust Belt) but even if I was against it, it's not changing because it's such a ideological question and our Constitution requires 2/3 of both houses of Congress and 3/4 of the states to amend it and the EC was so that small states weren't overwhelmed by larger ones and they're not giving up the ability to actually have a say. If we got rid of it, something like 1/4-1/3 of the population is in California, Texas, New York, and Florida and so no one would care what Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or Michigan(the states that lost Hillary the election) thought. Sorry for the rant there.

Canadian Lamer Kazimierz essentially led the American cavalry and at one point saved the life of George Washington, he died while fighting in Savannah Georgia. Tadeusz acted as an engineer for the continental army and at one point saved the southern army from destruction.

@svenservette41977 жыл бұрын
acerba The USA is a Democratic Republic. That means it's a Republic that uses democratic processes in parts of its government. Republic is a representative government. A pure democracy isn't. Pure democracies inevitably end up becoming something like a monarchy or oligarchy. True republics last longer.
@joshuamackey30407 жыл бұрын
Republic refers more to the form which the government takes, while democracy deals more with the way the citizenry participates in that form of government. Nations can form republics without being necessarily democratic (the Netherlands and Poland-Lithuania were both republics that were intensely aristocratic at the time of the American revolution), while a democracy does not necessarily follow a republican form of government. Smaller nation-states or other forms of communities can use direct democracy instead, or some nations will fit some form of democratic processes into other governing bodies. TL;DR, the U.S. is both democratic and republican in some form or fashion. Both neither of those terms are necessarily linked together; you can definitely have one without having the other.
@cramer45067 жыл бұрын
Not really. A democracy is where the people would vote directly on everything. A republic is where the people are represented by a small number of people.
