Alexander Malofeev was not yet twelve when he gave this coruscating performance. It is an astonishing achievement! Not just his technical mastery of the work but his deep emotional comprehension of its mystery and unique beauty. We have all heard famous pianists give exquisite performances of the Grieg Piano Concerto in A MInor, so it's a work that music-lovers are very familiar with. But to hear and observe Alexander perform it with such self-assurance, intensity and and dynamic perfection is deeply moving from one so young. Many believe this young Russian will be acclaimed as one of the greatest pianists of the twenty-first century. We will all be watching his growth and developing career with love and fascination.

Well -- first of all, please note that the Grieg A-minor is widely considered to be the "Queen Mother" of all concertos in terms of difficulty. Now this kid -- no, this wunderkind -- is 12 years old here and performs the piece far from perfectly. But, frankly, no one does. I have heard all the greats (Rubenstein, Van Cliburn, Horowitz, etc.) perform this over the last 60 years. This performance by Malofeev is nearly on a par with those past masters' accomplishments. And he is only 12 !!! So, you may ask, where will he end up? Well, if you search on-line you will find a performance of the Grieg by Malofeev at age 17. And it is . . . superb. The nuances that were lacking at age 12 are no longer missing. The technical mastery is improved. Only a single wrong note could be heard by my well-trained ears. (I am familiar with the score, have tried, piteously poorly,to play it myself since 1966, and know what to listen for.) It is, in short, just a smidgeon of a scintilla short of perfection. And he has yet to fully mature physically, mentally and emotionally. Bravo !!

Such authority, without affectation at all, but with assurance, an easy precision yet liveliness of phrase, rhythm and intonation, authentic, dynamic range of colour and contrast in sound, all harnessed to overwhelm the listener with so fluid, sensitive and impassioned a performance, whose crescendos bury one in their power and wonder. Would Grieg believe his ears than one so young did this? Is he from outer space?

It is played too fast, too rushed/choppy and a lot of the exquisite lyricism is lost. The most beautiful playing of this piece is Van Cliburn's. Cliburn knew how to draw out all its majesty and lyricism. When he played the 2nd movement, it was like an angel was playing - EXQUISITE. The Grieg is one of my favorites. I was lucky to hear Van play this twice in concert. He was in a class by himself.
