Alexander the Great now stands accused of having the gay because he had emotions when his best friend died. And of course, Netflix was right there, ready to run with that random, unsubstantiated nugget of information and put it front and center in Alexander: The Making of a God. But really though, was Alexander the Great really Alexander the GAY? Well, there's no real evidence for it...but Netflix is running with it! Haven't seem the show. But i have read tons of classical history, as close to primary sources as exist now.... the dude was totally gay. Like, even for a society (the Macedonians) that was cool with man on man sex, Alexander was extra gay.

Also, just because the dude loved dudes doesnt mean he necessarily had physical intercourse with them. There are no first hand accounts of people who saw that. Best evidence we have is basically that some dude called him a fa**ot as part of an insult. And that he kissed some dudes. Up until a few decades ago when people started getting weird about it, kissing a dude, even on the mouth, as a greeting, or as a celebration, wasnt considered fruity. It was normal. So tldr you dont know, i dont know, the ancient authors you read also didnt know.

Gayness in antiquity in okay, but these guys take the modern gay man, slap it as it is into a 2000 year old setting and call it a day. Greeks only acknowledged a dom and a sub kind of situation between males, where the sub was often a boy or a slave and definitely not a freeborn citizen, and the dom was an older man. Alexander's and Hephaistion's buttlplays would have been very shameful since they're both freemen and the same age, and definitely not something to display out in the open.

Regardless, the Macedonians were allowed to compete in the Olympic games, which was something only Greeks were allowed to do. Besides all this, the Macedonians shared the same religious beliefs, the Greek language, Greek customs and culture ... they were still indisputably Greek.
