I love how he brings up the fact that Perry "isn´t the typical abuser". In fact, many abusers are charming, successful, goodlooking and can even portray the image of being the perfect partner and/or parent. Many of them do not fall into the "typical abuser" category. You can never tell if anyone is an abuser just by looking at them or knowing their superficial life story. Often, abusers reserve their abusive side for their partner only, while treating other people much better.

A lot of abuse is exactly like this, which is why so many women that are abused don’t leave. Because it’s not abuse 24/7. There’s many wonderful times in an abusive relationship where the abuse is not going on. But then it does and it’s very confusing for many people experiencing it because of how bipolar these relationships can be. They say things like “well he isn’t always like this” etc...The happiest of highs to the lowest of low.

yes!! It kind of confused me... because when I watched the show for the first time, the realistic depiction of domestic violence is what impressed me so much. The cycle of abuse, the "power switch" after he had hit her, the shame, how he's torn... its all actually picture perfect abuser blue print. If abusers were just black and white a lot more people would leave them. But it's the rosy perfection that comes after an abusive episode that grows on people like a drug, and fuels the inability to leave. The fact that abusers hate themselves for what they did, how they often cry afterwards and apologize profusely, forgiveness, especially for someone who's being abused, comes so naturally. Because abusers are human. So yes. Humanising Perry was brilliant... its kind of weird they phrased it as "not the typical abuser" here. Because the fact that he's just that, the typical abuser, is kind of the point, and Im pretty sure written like that on purpose. I guess they couldve meant not the typical abuser as shown in media?

@@annabanabanana I did get out. Taught my 3 daughters not to take it, to stand up and leave if they have to. Always get help. I divorced their dad because I didn't want them to think that was normal. I didn't want them to think it was ok to be treated like that.

He was excellent in Big Little Lies. Such a despicable character but he was able to give him many layers. I would LOVE to see him recognized for his work. I don't think any of the other actors in his category gave a better performance than he did.

He was a fantastic and layered character. Played so well by the actor. Completely believable and balanced our by that female counsellor who called his behaviour what it was, violence. Not passion.

Notice how he said he didn't care to make Perry likable. I love this. Many actors who portray abusers nowadays defend their characters or say they want people to like them or relate to them, but we *aren't* supposed to like or relate to an abuser. We should see them as complex and layered, sure, but like them overall? No. I truly love Alex for this. Also Jean Marc Vallee framed Perry so carefully. We never get close ups of him unless he's out of focus or from a jarring angle. We're not meant to like him or relate to him (which is what close ups serve).

I would have liked to see perry/Nicole together in more scenes. I feel like the other couples got way more screen time, even though Nicole and Perry were the most interesting to see. I feel like even by the end of the season, his character wasn’t developed very well. Nobody knew anything about them together other than he was abusive.
@millatyyska67045 жыл бұрын
I kind of disagree, the beginning you didn't even know about the abuse. An important part of their relationship was the hiding and pretending. They showed several times how lovely he was for her and the kids, and how he could change his behavior in seconds for the kids.
