Just image being a macedinian soldier fighting Indians in Asia, or vice versa. And remember, they walked all the way, forget armies, most _people_ couldn't get that far. Alexander was truly the great.

I love the shot at 1:59, the contrast between the man who is shifting nervously, and understandably so since a herd of war elephants are bearing down on the pikemen, and the older man even more veteran than him who's rock solid and the perfect example of a stoic in the face of danger.

He's also one of the few in the shot who knew how to hold the xiston spear correctly. (Tucked under arm and held underhanded) They didn't do many takes of this because of how difficult it was to get the shot and so that's why a lot of the men in the mounted scenes are all holding their spears in such random positions different from eachother.

I see a lot of people claiming Alexander lost the Battle of the Hydaspes to King Porus so I put the actual battle and it’s outcome and strategies below because Alexander did win but with one hell of a fight. The actual battlefield is on a plain not a jungle or forest. The movie wanted to set the atmosphere of India for western audiences so they set it in a jungle which would be more familiar towards western audiences thinking about India. There’s even a scene earlier before the battle where the Greeks get scared of monkeys like they’ve never seen them before but going through major cities like Babylon, Cairo, and Persepolis they would’ve definitely known what a monkey was but it’s again the film makers setting the atmosphere to feel different from the plains of Mesopotamia. In reality the battle took place next to a river on an open plain. Alexander approached the river on one side with Porus blocking his path through to his kingdom. Alexander didn’t want to engage across a river like the battle of Granicus where he nearly lost against the Anatolian Satraps. This was made even worse because Alexander’s army just crossed the mountains of Afghanistan and were facing massive fatigue from constantly marching and fighting. Porus wanted to block Alexander from crossing and wait for Monsoon season to make the river uncrossable basically forcing the Macedonians back to Punjab for another year. Alexander however used his cavalry and a small infantry force to ford the river upstream during night routing a small attack lead by Porus’s son killing him. Porus now gathered his forces to battle the Macedonians on his side because while the Macedonian army was actually larger, only a fraction was on Porus side of the river meaning Porus could outnumber Alexander and gain the advantage although Alexander’s force was better trained and experienced. Notably Porus had One hundred war elephants leading his force which the Macedonians never faced leading Alexander to avoid putting his horses around them as the elephants could scare the living daylights out of them and route them. However, unlike the movie Alexander was the one to charge not wanting to give Porus the advantage slamming his companion cavalry into Porus left wing while his pike men kept the elephants and infantry in the center. The elephants were documented as fighting incredibly well periodically opening up gaps in the Macedonian line for Porus infantry to take advantage of. However, Porus noticed his left flank collapsing and sent his right flanks cavalry to reinforce them, but Alexander’s reserve cavalry saw the now exposed and unguarded right flank and wheeled all the way around Porus army to slam right into the back of Porus left flank now surrounding Porus’s left and breaking it completely. This caused many of Porus’s men to flee yet Porus fought ferociously and refused to retreat or surrender and was only captured after the rest of Alexander’s men crossed the river and surrounded him. Alexander heard of Porus’s Valor after the battle and personally met him asking him “How would you like to be treated?” Porus said something like: “As I am, a king!” And Alexander was so awe struck and impressed that he upgraded Porus from a local king to the Satrap of Punjab. The battle in total cost Alexander at least 1,000 men on a low estimate with Porus taking much higher casualties (around 13,000) due to his shear badassness of refusing to surrender while completely surrounded and fight till the end.

Alexander had seen war elephants before (just not in active battle). As he was traveling through the Persian empire he would’ve seen the various armies of local Satraps who submitted to him and in Egypt in particular there would’ve been elephants both as parts of the Egyptian army and as luxury pets. That’s the whole reason Alexander knew not to place his cavalry directly against the elephants as horses are scared of them and would rout if forced to fight something he would’ve seen in major cities across Persia. Alexander’s core force at the time was also the best in the world as his elite pikemen had been trained under Phillip the 2nd in tight nit formation meant to break any charging force with the massive Sarissa pike serving as the weapon of choice being 13-20ft long (4-6m). In a phalanx with these long spears the Macedonians were practically unbeatable against solely infantry as any force without projectiles wouldn’t be able to reach the men in the phalanx before being killed by the spears. The other two components of Alexander’s army were the silver shields who were a much heavier pikemen unit and were Alexander’s most elite infantry along with Alexander’s companion cavalry which he used to frequently break his opponents left flank against Porus and Darius the 3rd with little difficulty due to their heavy armor and long spears. Alexander’s army at this point had also fought over 20 large scale battles and many skirmishes on top of their elite training making them one of if not the most experienced army in the world. The problem was that this core force was relatively small (around 20,000 men) so the rest of his army was made up of various Persian Satrap’s levies which were of lower quality and skill. One of the main reasons the Greeks were able to win so much against the Persians was that they had massive professional armies who were specifically trained to fight and weren’t just levies drawn up by local satraps. If Alexander were to have actually invaded India he also wouldn’t have sat idly by in Babylon; just like his successor generals he would’ve trained the Persians as hoplites and figured out how to counter elephants as the Indians in Punjab would’ve been highly accustomed to fighting them and had various counters like purely Iron arrows and caltrops that Alexander would teach his men to use in advance. We even have records of a veteran of Alexander’s army employing this technique in the siege of Megalopolis as the Seleucids got elephants from their Indian lands and Alexander’s veterans placed nail ridden boards for the elephants to step on which worked causing the animals to flee or collapse and die. This is all assuming that Alexander would even want to invade India had he lived as his only known plans were that he wanted to invade Arabia as retribution for the various raids during his sieges of Tyre and Gaza, then North Africa to attack Carthage for Aiding Tyre, and then finally Italy to bring the Greek city states in the peninsula under heel and by extension the entire peninsula. Alexander’s only opportunity to invade India would be late in his life after all of this, and in real life the Seleucids had great relations with the Indians and later the Mauryan Empire under Chandragupta so there’s no reason for Alexander to attack as he would have no justification or support from his vassals.

@@harsh_zz1620 the circumstances of Porus’s death are odd, because he was assassinated and his killer is unknown although it’s commonly attributed to two people Chanakya or Eudemus. Alexander on the other hand had been dead for over 5 years, so unless he rose from his unknown grave to kill Porus there’s 0 chance he was involved. Alexander died in 323 BCE and Porus died in 316 BCE around 6-7 years later.

@@motivationallizard6644 1. He killed his Father for the Throne of Macedonia. 2. Later he killed his uncle in which arms he spend his Childhood. 3. When his army won battle he recklessly killed innocent public, take away beautiful women for army enjoyment . 4. They also don't spare Innocent Children and killed them so bruetly . So how can he spare life of “ Puru the great” There was one golden rule during the ancient times:”Do not cross the Indus. “ Semiramis learnt it and so did Alexander “the overconfident” (his last phase).. There were thick forests which the Greeks,Persians and Scythians are not accustomed to. Malaria, other diseases , poisonous snakes and parasites were enough to demoralize his army. And then there was the great Indian monsoon. Until the advent of artillery no western /central Asian army has ever managed to win a head on battle against the mighty Indian Elephants. The Phalanx work only on very flat terrain protected from all sides by Cavalry. I do not how so many Quorans are getting the idea of “poking” Elephants eye as a game changer in the Battle of Hydaspes. What is the imagination here..a static Elephant and mighty Phalanx marching head on to poke it? They were a flop show in the Indian and also Roman battlefields. The Romans did it even without the mighty Indian Elephants. The phalanx are useless in uneven/marshy/rocky and wooded terrain. All you need is a small gap to finish them off. The War Elephants used by our ancestors were well trained, armed and armoured. The Elephants are trained to concentrate on Mahouts kicks and pull. In the heat of battle these intoxicated Elephants can fight blindfolded (with blinders) and deaf. The first wave of war Elephants are unleashed on the flanking Cavalry and infantry troops followed by attack on the flank of the so called mighty undefeatable Phalanx.Just a couple of Elephants armed with strong ropes/logs are enough to break any formation. Alexander made the first mistake of attacking Porus on a rainy day. This meant his archers consisting mostly of the Scythians were useless. The Phalanx formation also would struggle trying to hold the heavy Sarisas on the marshy ground. Chariots too were equally ineffective. Alexander also did not use the local knowledge of the terrain. He mistook an island in the river as the opposite bank and crossed the river only to discover his foolishness and then crossed over to another island before making it to the opposite bank. He ..Alexander the overconfident..didn't listen to the teachings of Sun Tsu and paid the price. Propaganda and facts are different. One thing many people do not know is Alexander was very scared of water. He almost drowned and would have died if not for his bodyguards. But propaganda movies and series will show him bravely walking across the flooding Hydaspes (most probably Baes not Jhalem). He even refused to take the sea route back to Babylon killing most of his troops in the long march though the deserts. Eventually dying of the infected wounded lungs . According to the Greeks, Alexander was apparently so impressed by Porus he gave back his kingdom plus the territories of king Ambhi of Taxila who had fought alongside the Macedonians. This is counterintuitive. Ambhi had become Alexander’s ally on the condition he would be given Porus’ kingdom. So why reward the enemy, whose army had just mauled the Macedonians? The only possible answer is at the Battle of Hydaspes, the Macedonians realised they were dealing with an enemy of uncommon valour. Sensing defeat they called for a truce, which Porus accepted. The Indian king struck a bargain - in return for Ambhi’s territories, which would secure his frontiers, Porus would assist the Macedonians in leaving India safely. Alexander’s post-Hydaspes charitable behavior, as per Greek accounts, is uncharacteristic and unlikely. For, in battles before and after, he massacred everyone in the cities he subdued. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, Porus was assassinated by one of Alexander's generals

On an open field and not a dense forest Alexanders army would have beaten the elephants of the indians. Elephants are smart and won't charge into spikes, they instead would charge through the gaps of the phalanx and be killed by skirmishers. Also his army was tired and wanted to return home after 8 years compared to a freshly rested indian army fighting for their homeland.

A Letter to Humanity: Dear Fellow Humans, We have come so far, yet we have lost our way. Look around us. The earth that sustains us is withering. The rivers run dry, the forests are dying, and the air we breathe is filled with toxins. Our wars rage on, dividing us when we should be uniting. We destroy, we fight, we kill-not just each other, but the very planet that gave us life. We stand at a crossroads. We cannot ignore the truth any longer: our actions are costing us everything. We have created food shortages, poverty, and suffering with our greed. We have built prisons, yet we imprison our own souls in the pursuit of things that do not matter. We have poisoned the waters, polluted the skies, and paved over the earth that once gave us all we needed. It doesn’t have to be this way. We need unity, not division. We need to come together, not as separate nations, but as one human family. We need to honor the earth and its gifts, to protect the air, the water, and the land, not for our sake alone, but for the generations to come. We need more schools, not prisons. We need knowledge, compassion, and understanding. The world is not a place for punishment but a place for growth. We must teach love, cooperation, and respect for the earth and each other. We need fresh water, clean air, and fertile soil. These are not luxuries; they are the foundation of life. Without them, we cannot survive. We cannot continue to take without giving back. We must learn to live in balance, in harmony with nature, before it is too late. The time to change is now. We can no longer wait for others to take the first step. It starts with us. We are the ones who can heal the planet, who can rebuild the world, who can make things right. Let us return to what truly matters. Let us be a generation of healing, not destruction. Let us act with the wisdom and compassion that we know deep inside. We can do this, together. But we must choose to. The earth is waiting for us to remember. With love and hope, The One

@@AlhanAhmed19 What's even funnier is u being an ignorant foreigner trying to teach us what happened to us🤣🤣 Porus(Purandar) gave a tough fight to Alexander but unfortunately, he was defeated and was captured and taken to Alexander. Alexander was impressed by Porus because of the way he slaughtered Greek forces. In the end, he was spared and his kingdom was given back. Alexander made complete preparation to capture the whole of India and make a permanent settlement, but little did he know that the Mauryans led by King Chandra Gupta Maurya and his huge army were waiting for his arrival😂 Chandra Gupta Maurya gave a befitting reply to the Greeks and the whole Hellenistic soldiers were demoralized. Alexander suffered heavy losses & he knew that he couldn't push further and he might also die so he gave all the responsibilities to his general Seleucus Nicator and left India forever👋. Even Seleucus suffered the same fate so they decided to have peace & friendship with India. He married his daughter Helena to King Chandra Gupta Maurya. By this many Greeks married Indians and later so many Indo-Greek kingdoms were born one such notable Kingdom was the great Kushan empire and the famous ruler is King Kanishka. He built beautiful temples in North India. Even now some people in North India have their surnames as Gujjar, Bhati, Dhaima, Nagar. They are all descendants of the Kushan empire.

Hindus telling us about the victory over Alexander is probably the most vile and shameful phenomenon on the Internet. You were captured by the Europeans without a fight, what kind of victory over Alexander are you talking about.

@Supreme Reality After this war When asked by Alexander how he wished to be treated, Porus replied "Treat me as a king would treat another king". Impressed, Alexander indeed treated him like a king, allowing him to retain his lands. porus is also a good warrior porus and Alexander became good friends♥️

@@reactornewten9073 the king who Alexander defeated at the battle of the Hydaspes. A lot of Indian nationalists like to try and claim Alexander lost the battle even with 0 credible evidence as a way of saying their better than Alexander the Great and by extension the civilizations that he inspired in the west.

@@a4ya294 it wasn’t an easily fought battle it was one of Alexander’s hardest fought in his entire campaign not counting Sieges due to his own soldiers exhaustion and Porus’s army being larger and well commanded. On top of that no ancient sources say Alexander lost, and even further the many Greek sculptures, coins, and and items like pottery found in Porus’s kingdom couldn’t have gotten there in such large quantities if Porus won. If he won why would he accept the culture of the man he just defeated make and Alexander’s coins his own currency? It’s a nonsensical argument that blatantly goes against centuries of historical consensus with 0 credible evidence purely so Indian nationalists can paint Porus as some hero who threw back the western invaders. And if you STILL believe Alexander somehow still lost it doesn’t really matter because the Bactrian Greeks he left behind conquered India under Demetrius I around 100 years after Alexander died at Babylon
