Rugby is Australias version of USAs wrestling essentially. Quite good techniques and fitness that transfers over. Not to mention that lack of neck (a lot of rugby players have short necks cause of big traps or learn to tuck there neck in very far to avoid injuries and absorb a tackle) helps counter submission artists.

the way volk used to be as big as he was when he was playing rugby, to not only to lose weight train mma at 24 then to become one of the greatest fighters. it’s astonishing what he’s doing with little time he’s had. he’s my favorite fighter because he embodies a true mixed martial artist. he combines everything together and puts it all in 1. his striking wrestling iq etc. he’s truly one of the greats. i try to mimic my style after him

There's several things you can't do to Volk: You can't break him. You can't outlast him. You can't out-gas him. As well: He's *very* hard to submit (the best couldn't do it). He's *very* hard to KO (only once 10 years ago). So that leaves a *very* narrow path to victory over Volk!

Can't forget that in the second Max fight Volk got woken up in the middle of his sleep the night before by usada. He had heavy sleep pills and had to load up on water to pee for the test. He never ended up being able to sleep and was messed up because of the sleep pills. It took two rounds of getting punched and kicked to wake him up. And he ended up winning the last three rounds.

I’ll never forget when Islam had his back, and Volk was screaming at him telling him to finish him, all while punching Islam in the face. That’s an MMA memory I’ll carry for the rest of my life! Or even the end of the third round in his fight with Ortega… how Ortegas corner pretty much lifted his broken body onto his corner stool after Volk escaped two deep submissions, and then beat the absolute shit out of Ortega to close to round. They’re like mythical moments of mma in my brain. Like if you told someone who hadn’t watched those fights, they wouldn’t believe you lol.

@@kennyhouser3467 you’re missing the elephant in the room. The mythos of Islam is that once he has dominant position on the ground, the fight is over. Alex lost position. Islam had him right where he wanted him and couldn’t finish. Not only could he not finish him, he was completely stalled. He couldn’t do anything other than ride his back and watch the clock. That’s fucking incredible considering the level of Islams wrestling. Go back and watch the fight. Watch Islams face during the champ rounds. He wanted that fight to finish more than anything in this world. Yes, Volk was conceding that he got caught, but then what? He was challenging Islam and he did nothing. In saying all that, Islam showed incredible stand-up ability that matched Volk. I loved that fight for so many reasons. It was a true reflection of just how talented both fighters were, that they were able to nullify each others strengths.
