Alexandria Yard in Alexandria, Virginia was once the northern terminus for the Southern (SR) and later Norfolk Southern (NS) Railways. This video adds to the historical record of railroad activity at and near Alexandria Yard along the SR/NS and Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac (RF&P) railroads in 1985 and 1988. I just ran across your video, but thank you for catching SOU 2613w. I worked on her as a conductor for the Carolina Southern in the early 2000's. Quite possibly one of the best pulling locomotives we had back then. She suffered a minor fire in her electrical cabinet in 2012 while pulling a unit rock train to Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, this would seal her fate. By 2014 she was scrapped. Amazingly, after her short career with the Waccamaw Coast Line, and her 17 year career with Carolina Southern, she never lost her tuxedo livery.

I worked as car repairman at Alexandria yard in the mid 80’s, after being furloughed at the Linwood, NC yard. The car repair “shop” at Alexandria was just a track running through a low, muddy area. During my year there, they began construction of a steel building with concrete floor to do the car repair work in. If memory serves correct, they never repaired a single car in that new shop because they closed the yard right after they finished the building! I was back in NC by then, and I couldn’t believe they closed the yard, and especially couldn’t believe it when I heard Pot Yard was closing! At that time, nearly every train that operated into or out of Linwood had either come from Pot Yard, or was headed there! Now Linwood has suffered the same fate.

My name is Ben, I to worked at Potomac yard back in the 80s, and so did my father-in-law. Norton Bragg. He was there for a long time and new a lot of people.

Up until 2009, the land remained relatively undeveloped, with most of the removed rail yard being empty fields. 11 years later, it’s completely unrecognizable. Somebody who moved away before the yard was removed would probably not recognize it.
