Its unfortunate that a lot of those items are clearly not handmade and definitely made in China, so not at all sustainable / eco-friendly as advertised. The prices also seem quite inflated - $150 for a calendar that includes cotton buds, a comb, a toothbrush, and dental floss! That said, I love how you do support small businesses and the bars/salves/etc looked nice!

Oh my goodness, I cannot with these Etsy sellers not labeling their products correctly! There are very specific rules about what you can call things on labels and how to list them (even including font size requirements!), EVOO is not one of them. Btw it stands for extra virgin olive oil (I assume), it’s an abbreviation made popular by food bloggers back in like 2010!

And it makes us makers who do follow the rules upset because their neglegence can put our businesses in jeopardy. It could cause the fda to crack down on small businesses and make it even harder for us to legally be in business. Also, if they aren't even doing the labeling correctly, then what else isn't being done correctly? Are the fragrances/essential oils being used properly? (there are guidelines for safe usage) Are they using good manufacturing practices? I doubt it if they don't even do the labeling correctly.

Biodegradable plastics, like the 'corn floss', is made from a chemical called PLA. It is usually extracted from the waste parts of the plant like the leaves and stem. Many plants can be used too. It does biodegrade in the right conditions but takes its time. 🖤

For the corn I did study that for a bit in one class at uni. Corn can have a similar molecular structure to polyurethane aka plastic. So they treat the molecule so it can be of as similar shape as the petrol used to make plastic to make a type of plastic that isn't dangerous if animals like plankton eat them. They can digest it and it won't hurt them not hurt the animals who end up eating them.

I love it when people are selling real handmade items. I have used that face sponge!! It is infused with nice things for your face and it gently exfoliates without being too harsh. I loved to so much I used it until it fell apart. It lasts a long time.

I am going through a divorce and suffering from severe depression. As a counselor who has helped others through the same thing, I can tell you that brushing your teeth is definitely a form of self-care, even though it seems so small. With that being said, that's not the first thing my mind goes to when it comes to an Etsy advent calender 😅 but I think this would be a great gift for someone who is struggling to meet their very basic self-care needs. I would love to see you try your hand at building an advent calender. I think you would do great with it!

When I'm going through one of my depressive episodes, I force myself to get up and brush my teeth. It's the beginning of reclaiming that missing motivation. Before you know it, I realize I actually want to get dressed and go out to do something, or figure out how to feel accomplished for the day. I would never ever want to receive a toothbrush as a Christmas gift - Advent calendar or not.

OHHH the little sponge is honestly the only thing I'm excited about from the whole box XD I'm very sure it's a konjac sponge, and it becomes wonderfully soft and squishy after a slight soak - and also it about doubles in size! It's made from konjac plant root, so makes sense why it'd be in an essentially biodegradable/environment friendly themed box It's very nice to use for washing your face, I basically use it to help wash the face wash off (and I'm pretty convinced that without it the face wash is much harder to fully rinse off)

There’s a bit of a movement lately to make self care less about luxury/frivolous things and more about literally caring for yourself - things like brushing your teeth and making doctors appointments because so many folks are having issues with that lately. I'd be a bit worried to give this as a gift that the recipient might take it the wrong way with the number of more basic hygiene items. That said, I did appreciate that they were elevated for fancy versions of everyday products that everyone uses on a regular basis. The dish soap and the cotton buds were a bit of a letdown, though at least they gave you a decent amount of them *cough Sephora cough cough.* I think it was odd they gave the conditioner bar but not the shampoo one, and that the toothbrush and apparently it's holder were separate days. The shampoo bar could have easily replaced the cotton buds or allowed them to put the toothbrush with its holder. I also wish the items were numbered as well to make it more of an "advent calendar" rather than a "gift set." Over all, I appreciate that it was different, but I don't think it quite hit the way they hoped. If they relabeled it as "everyday essentials" or "elevated essentials" gift set/calendar I think it would find more customers looking for this kind of stuff and less disappointment.

I will say, the choice of products does fit in with the zero waste values, which is to reduce environmental footprint, a lot of zero waste people ask for essentials for Christmas to reduce the purchasing of unnecessary/wasteful items. Cedarwood isn’t my favorite scent either. Once bought three bars of soap because I read/understood cedarwood as sandalwood which is one of my favorite lol. Highly recommend GoatMilkStuff if you enjoy goat milk soap, they are a family run business. My skin loves it, the scented for in the shower and I have an unscented bar for washing my face. 😊

I work at a small family-owned business that's been around over a hundred years in the bug killing industry. We do sell some all-natural products that contain a lot of essential oils. There is definitely a trend towards using shampoo and conditioning bars. They tend to be more effective as they have little water and more active ingredients. zig course they are more sustainable as they are smaller & lighter to transport, and tend to have plant based ingredients rather than chemicals.
