I wound up making a video explaining the outcome as that was easier: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4rNloqArKlph7M Basically they both sound great and the differences are a bit like how the rev3 is different to the rev2. The rev4 now joins the fold of Prophets.

thanks for the results, when you say 7A is rev 4 and 7B is rev 3, are you referring to the the youtube video or the wav files? because they're swapped in one or the other. also, there is a typo in your answers, even if we can guess it easily, 2B and 3B should be 5B and 6B. Great video. But one question: Do you both have the same audio interface? I only ask because in the samples with low notes, one of the two has WAY more sub-bass than the other and I'm wondering if that's due to the difference in interfaces or is actually a difference in the revisions. If it's a difference in the revisions, I'm going to say that the samples with more bass are the Rev4 only because modern op-amps are much more linear than in the late 70s / early 80s and the older components might be limiting the frequency response of the older Prophet. But I could be full of it. So... 1A - Rev4 2A - Rev4 3A - Rev4 4B - Rev4 5B - Rev4 6A - Rev4 7B - Rev4 8B - Rev4 9A - Rev4 Thanks for the cool video!

I would have no idea. Love the comparison, but to me it demonstrates that there are no differences here that I care about. Alex, How would you classify each of these 9 patches? Such as: lead, bass, pad, etc. I'd be curious in a breakdown of people's accuracy (or preferences) by patch type in case there was anything interesting to see there. Maybe the Rev4 excels at leads while Rev 3 is preferred for pads.

In some tracks there was some note stealing happening in one of the tracks, so I'm quite confident that was the rev3 with only half the polyphony. Also some in some tracks one synth had more variance in oscillator pitch than the other. I'm going to assume that is the rev3, because I would expect a newly made synth from Dave Smith to be perfectly in tune over the next few years. But I might be wrong here, 7B which is the less detuned one has some note glitches which I would expect rather from the rev3. There were some tracks I could not identify using these indicators, so I compared the base sound of the synths and looked for patterns. Depending on how the patches were "transferred" (MIDI or by hand and ear) I might be completly off in those cases. I found one synth was usually more mellow and that always happend to be the one with more pitch variance and in some cases the one with note stealing, so I'm going to assume that is the rev3. The last indicator (when I was completely lost) was which synth sounded more "musical", as in "The way the sound is shaped and operated better suits the performance in my personal opinion", e.g., the vibrato intensity sounds more like I would use or expect it. Let's be honest, that's pure guess work, though. 1A: rev4? (higher filter cutoff, but noisy at the end) 1A: rev3? (more mellow, lower filter cutoff, shorter filter env) 2A: rev4 2B: rev3 (more pitch variance/detune) 3A: rev4 3B: rev3 (note stealing, more mellow) 4A: rev3 (note stealing, more mellow) 4B: rev4 5A: rev3 (higher filter cutoff or just less resonance, note stealing 6:04) 5B: rev4 (warmer, more resonance, louder, slightly shorter filter env) 6A: rev4? (vibrato sounds very nice, brighter) 6B: rev3? (too much vibrato) 7A: rev4 7B: rev3 (more mellow, more detune, warmer, shorter filter env, lower filter sustain? sounds more rounded, but filter more similar to 5B and strange note glitches around 8:04) 8A: rev3 (note stealing) 8B: rev4 9A: rev3 (more pitch variance) 9B: rev4 (super clean)

I tried to mostly listen for how the filter sounds when driven by the envelope and I feel like if you would describe how open the filter sounds by a curve, they wouldn't be exactly covariant. To my ear one has a more slow starting filter that gives it a bit more refined sound whilst the other feels a little more open and saturated? I'm guessing the rev4 is the more refined and the rev3 is more saturated. 1A - Rev3 1B - Rev4 2A - Rev4 2B - Rev3 3A - Rev3 3B - Rev4 4A - Rev3 4B - Rev4 5A - Rev4 5B - Rev3 6A - Rev3 6B - Rev4 7A - Rev3 7B - Rev4 8A - Rev4 8B - Rev3 9A - Rev4 9B - Rev3 Great video and I'm really excited to see the result.

At this point, they sound so close, the only drawback will be the musician playing them. I don't think the difference would even be heard in the mix It is very slim, not actually big enough to be noticable and also factor in component age.. in that regard, no difference.
1a: Rev4 1b: Rev3 2a: Rev3 2b: Rev4 3a: Rev4 3b: Rev3 4a: Rev3 4b: Rev4 5a: Rev3 5b: Rev4 6a: Rev4 6b: Rev3 7a: Rev4 7b: Rev3 8a: Rev3 8b: Rev4 9a: Rev3 9b: Rev4 My reasoning is that the Rev3 should sound fatter and smoother or just less dynamic, while the Rev4 should clearer and punchier. @benanderson893 жыл бұрын
Listening with halfway decent headphones and a clean DAC makes it a bit easier because the old Rev 3 has a bit of a noisy output (I assume, for all I know your Rev4 might have a ground loop issue that has crept up). Plus, the Rev4 has a slightly more elastic quality (pretentious language I know) with the tiniest cut in the high frequencies that I picked up on; but if I didn't own a Rev4 myself I never would've made that connection. The differences with both of them are miniscule anyway. This is the same level of difference you'd get between two Rev 3s that had been serviced by two different people. My guesses are: 1A: r4 1B: r3 2A: r4 2B: r3 3A: r3 3B: r4 4A: r4 4B: r3 5A: r3 5B: r4 6A: r4 6B: r3 7A: r3 7B: r4 8A: r4 8B: r3 9A: r4 9B: r3

@hardcorehouse3 жыл бұрын
There is a difference, but I wouldn't say it's entirely clear to most years. I want many vintage profits, and the variances aren't that great actually; I think the difference between these models is slightly more

I think the prophet-5 rev 3 is 1B ; 2B ; 3A ; 4A ; 5B ; 6A ; 7B in the video (or 7A with the wavs) ; 8A ; 9A because it seems to have more presence and clarity to me. The other one is sounding close on some patches but duller on some other patches.
I was able to identify 9 out of 10 correctly. The only one I got wrong is the high resonance example 8, which is hard to tell the tone because you mostly hear resonance. Having owned both, the bigger low end on the new one is a big giveaway to which is which.

I never do these either - but I did. Seemed to me 1 of the pair always sounded slightly more mellow with more body than the other. I took the more full bodied one to be the 3. But I've never played either so probably hideously wrong on all counts! I am also quite envious of Marius's ability to sit with his legs crossed (assuming he could still stand up unaided to turn the camera off) :-) 1A - Rev 3, 1B Rev 4 2A - Rev 4, 2B Rev 3 3A - Rev 4, 3B - Rev 3 4A - Rev 4, 4B - Rev 3 5A - Rev 4, 5B - Rev 3 6A - Rev 4, 6B - Rev 3 7A - Rev 4, 7B - Rev 3 8A - Rev 3, 8B - Rev 4 9A - Rev 3, 9B - Rev 4

ELECTRO WAYNE Alex we need the patches after this is all settled! Please? Lol . Great video! There are a few rev 3 owners that I know who post on every prophet video on the net stating some “enormous” sonic gap between these 2 😂. Some even cancelled there rev 4 pre orders lol! I’m waiting to see if they will have the pair to post their thoughts now. That huge sonic gap and 10k top end” Sizzle” they swore was missing even after the extra caps issues was resolved. . I’m needing to see 97% or better answers from that lot. that 7k worth difference. I love my rev 4 and will still get a rev 2 or 3 one day. Looking forward to the results and the patches 🙏 Thanks for the video

Would be very interested in anyone and everyone's answers. A blind test is quite humbling and that's why I said we should leave all that crap at the door because I know the scenario you're describing. Another reason a blind test is great is that even if there are differences, that doesn't necessarily identify which is which. There isn't just one precise way for something to sound great. Will see what the results are , we've got quite a few entrants now. :)

I choose the rev 3 as the one that had phase issues with the osc, and more "resonance induced basse", or more dynamic overall but to be honest I absolutely have no idea in the end ! 1A rev 4 1B rev 3 2A rev 4 2B rev 3 3A rev 3 3B rev 4 4A rev 3 4B rev 4 5A rev 4 5B rev 3 6A rev 3 6B rev 4 7A rev 4 7B rev 3 8A rev 4 8B rev 3 9A rev 3 9B rev 4 Good luck for collecting all the answers :p cheers Alex !!
I think maybe one has different default envelope curves and the oscillators seem to have a bit of a different thing going on. Once I get back home to my reference system I will give a little guess just to see if i can even consistently guess the same synth one patch to the next.

for the test whichever sound I preferred I gave it to the Vintage....8 out of 9 correct...Vintage just sits better nothing is jumping out note to note...phase is tighter as I now find with all these vintage vs reissue comparisons....wonder why they just cant nail the phase aspect in present day?
Sure, I'll play. They both sound great. 1A - rev4, 1B - rev3 2A - rev4, 2B - rev3 3A - rev3, 3B - rev4 4A - rev4, 4B - rev3 5A - rev3, 5B - rev4 6A - rev4, 6B - rev3 7A - rev4, 7B - rev3 8A - rev4, 8B - rev3 9A - rev3, 9B - rev4 BTW, you could do this test with two rev3s and probably get at least the same amount of variation in sound. 😀

I suspect it was the difference between the 5-voice in unison and the 10-voice in unison. The 10 would naturally sound dramatically different. These were Night and day, and both patches were fantastic, but nowhere near the same thing.
@AlexBallMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWarriorSongProject You can change the voice count of the unison on the P10, which is what I did. But they were still very different but both very cool (as you say). There's actually a mode to disable 5 voices on the 10 now, so that it behaves like a 5. People requested it but it's not something I'd ever use.

Some of the clips gave hints about which was which, due to turning a knob or a mod wheel or the sound generally just being a little "off" in one clip or the other. Using that as a guide, it seemed like the rev4 had more bass and treble, while the rev3 seemed darker with more middle frequencies. So with that as a guide, here are my guesses: 1A rev4 1B rev3 2A rev4 2B rev3 3A rev4 3B rev3 4A rev3 4B rev4 5A rev3 5B rev4 6A rev3 6B rev4 7A rev3 7B rev4 8A rev4 8B rev3 9A rev4 9B rev3 Patch 7 didn't match what I expected though, which makes me think perhaps my entire approach was wrong.
