lift gamma gain - shadows midtones highlights (are they same or work similarly)
@AlexBjorstorp Жыл бұрын
They are not the same but sort of similar. Shadow, midtones and highlights only touch those areas. Meaning, adjusting shadows won't touch the black point, the midtones or anything else. For specific adjustments in those areas it's great. The lift, gamma and gain is a bit different. Any adjustment in any of these also impact other parts. Lift is basically moving the blackpoint but in a way so that both the shadows, midtones and highlights are affected. The same goes for the gain but the other way around, moving the white point. The gamma leaves the black and white points alone but adjust both the shadows, midtones and highlights, with more emphasis on the shadows than the highlights. I hope that makes sense. It was the best way I could explain it in a message here ☺️

Great video! Quick and easy to understand. I got into color grading the opposite way trying to learn the hard way first, i did not even know what log footage was or how to record it, i thought i was beggining to understand but every time i record there is always sometime wrong haha. I have a Canon g7x Mark 2 and nikon d5200 not the fanciest cameras and not really made to shoot log but i still want to color correct, i have started shooting in neutral modes but from my understanding you need to desaturate even more. My question is what would you recomend me do? I post videos in nature, i want the colors to look good but still natural, should i just stick to basics with exposure contrast etc and ditch rec.709 color transform, i find that it usually looks too saturated if i use color transform what should i do instead? Sorry for the long post but everytime i search for answers i find more questions and i dont really know where to begin or what to focus on, editing my videos takes a long time and i love it i could sit all day but i want to become more productive

I'm not sure I fully understand your question but I think you're asking what to do when you're not shooting in LOG. In this case it shouldn't be necessary to use a Color Space Transform. Instead, if your footage is lacking saturation, I would simply use a node and add Saturation in there - the new Saturation slider in the ColorSlice with Resolve 19 is really good and effective without destroying the image. If you want to learn more about color grading in a structured way, you can check out my course that runs you through everything you need to know. There's a link in the description below all my videos :-)

@@AlexBjorstorp yes sorry for the confusion TMI. That is what i was asking but im also wondering if i put saturation and contrast on lowest setting in camera would it be possible to use colorspace or you think its better to just use the saturation wheel? Will check out the course, thanks!
@AlexBjorstorp6 ай бұрын
@@Makziie changing the saturation and contrast in-camera doesn't change it to LOG, so I still wouldn't use a Color Space Transform, when you're already in the correct color space :-) It's better then, to use the tools in DaVinci to get the look you're after - or applying a LUT you like to make it easier and faster

I really like ur other videos so request you to Pl explain wht exactly u were looking for when you were adjusting the lift gamma gain

Cheers mate, this a very old video of mine from when I was just starting out for real on KZbin. I wasn’t as good as explaining back then, but happy to hear you’re enjoying my more recent videos. Sad that it came to a dislike but I can’t change the past only improve in the present which is what I’ve been doing since then. Have a great day mate 😊
